The Condition of the Salaf in Ramadhaan – Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan

[Click here to Watch Video with English Subtitles]

Question:

I have some questions; the first question: what was the state of the Salaf As-Saalih, may Allaah have mercy upon them and be pleased with them, in anticipation of this great month? How was their guidance? How was their character and their conduct? The second matter, O eminent Shaykh, how does the Muslim prepare to take advantage of these nights and days which he is now living in; preparation by way of knowledge, by knowing the rulings of fasting and knowing the nullifiers of the fast and its rulings? Some of the people are heedless of these things so they do not understand the affair of fasting and they also do not have the obligatory understanding of the affair of the fast, has the Shaykh noticed this matter? May Allaah reward you.

Answer:

In the name of Allaah the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Wa Alaykum As-Salaam wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh; may Allaah bless you. Regarding that which you have drawn attention to, from these two great matters; the first question is regarding the condition of the Salaf in the month of Ramadhaan. The condition of the Salaf, as it is recorded in the narrated books with chains of narrations from the trustworthy people (narrating) from them is that they would ask Allaah the Mighty and Majestic to make them reach Ramadhaan before it entered; they would ask Allaah to make them reach the month of Ramadhaan due to what they knew that it contained from abundant good and general benefit. Then, when Ramadhaan entered, they would ask Allaah to aid them upon righteous actions therein. The when Ramadhaan ended they would ask Allaah to accept it from them. As Allaah the Mighty and Majestic says:

وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ ٦٠ أُولَئِكَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ ٦١

“And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning). It is these who race for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salât (prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on].”(Al-Mu’minun 23:60-61)

They would strive hard in doing actions, then worry would afflict them, after the action, as to whether their action was accepted or not. That was due to their knowledge of the greatness of Allaah and their knowledge that Allaah does not accept except that (action) which is done purely for His face and correctly in accordance with the Sunnah of His Messenger from actions. So they would not purify themselves, and they would fear that their actions would be rendered null. So (worry) that they (the action) will be accepted was weightier with them than (even) the performance of them. This is because Allaah the Mighty and Majestic says:

إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ

“Verily, Allaah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious).” (Al-Ma’idah 5:27)

So they would devote their time within this month, as we have previously mentioned, to worship and would minimize actions of the Dunyaa. They would spend their time sitting in the houses of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic and they would say: We are safeguarding our fast and we will not backbite anyone. They would read the Mus-hafs and study the Book of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. They would safeguard its time from squandering. They were not heedless or negligent as many of the people are today. Rather, they would preserve its time; the night, by standing (in prayer) and the day by fasting, recitation of the Qur’aan, the remembrance of Allaah, and righteous actions. They were not negligent therein of (even) a minute or a second, except that they would put forth therein righteous actions. This is the first question.

Placing parents in a rest home / Old age home – Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan

Placing parents in a Rest home / Old age home

Shaykh Fawzan: Keeping the ties of kinship has it affects in this life and the next. Thus if keeping the ties of kinship is from the reasons that extend the lifespan and increase the provision, then it is even more befitting to honor the parents because they are the closest of all the relatives. Therefore honoring the parents is a reason for Allah to extend your lifespan and increase your lifespan. And being undutiful to the parents is a reason for the lifespan to be shortened and a reason for the provision to be restricted. Just as honoring the parents is a reason for the lifespan to be extended and the provision to be increased. And the reward or punishment is from the same category as the action which was performed.

Nor will you be requited anything except that which you used to do

(Soorah Yasin 36:54)

What do you think about what has now appeared, unfortunately, in the Muslim community when the parents become elderly they are thrown in a convalescent home, or an old folk’s home as it is called. The child rids himself of them by placing his parents or one of his parents in an old folk’s home.

It is as though they are not their children; rather it is as though they are the parents of those who work at the old folk’s home.

Subhana Allah! Is this an animal or a person? There is no might or power except with Allah! This is the greatest form of disrespect.        This would not be done by a person who has in their heart fear of Allah the Exalted.

How would you feel if your child did this to you?! When you age and become sick they take you and place you in a convalescent home, an old folk’s home. How would you feel? How angry would you be at them? And what would be the sin that he; your child, would incur? Why then do you demand the rights that are due to you but you do not want to give the rights which are required from you?!

Thus every Muslim must have taqwa of Allah. Disrespecting the parents has become widespread during this time, the hearts have hardened, and the relatives have become estranged.

And the customs of our enemies from the western lands and the disbelievers have come upon us; those who don’t have families or homes, except for a home that resembles the home of an animal. They get a home and they live alone or they live with dogs. As for them living with their parents or with their children, or with their brothers then no, this does not exist in most of the disbelieving lands.

Now some of the Muslims wish to imitate them; unfortunately. Thus they wish to throw their parents or one of their parents into the old folk’s home and to rid themselves of them.

And if he has some type of sentiment then perhaps he will come visit them on the Eid and give them salaams, merely visiting them. Or some days he will pass by and give them salaams. And he considers this to be sufficient in fulfilling his parents’ rights upon him.

Thus it is upon the Muslim to be mindful and to have tawqa of Allah; and he should understand that what he does to others will be done to him. And he will be taken to account for his actions. And he should not place anything before showing kindness to his parents except the obedience of Allah. For the one who desires a reward and recompense then do not place any action before kindness to the parents except for the rights of Allah the Exalted.

And with this; we ask Allah the Exalted by His beautiful Names and lofty Attributes to rectify the children and the offspring of the Muslims. And we ask Him to return the Muslims to the practice of Islam in the desired manner. And we ask Him to make the Muslims, families, who love each other and are content with one another and homes of righteousness. And we ask Him to make the Muslims far away from resembling the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and those who have destroyed and shattered the ties of kinship thus becoming like animals or even more astray. And there is no might or power except with Allah.

May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet, and his family and his companions.

From His Signs are the Night and the Day – Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan

From His Signs are the night and the day
By: Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan
Taken from His Explanation of Al-Usool Ath-Thalaathah Pg. 81-83

Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:

“From His signs are the night and the day the sun and the moon. From His creation are the seven heavens and the seven earths; those who are within them and those who are between them.”

Explanation

His statement: “From His signs are the night and the day the sun and the moon…”

Ayat are of two types:

The First Type: Universal Ayat which you see. Such as the heavens, the earth, the stars, the sun, the moon, the mountains, the trees, and the oceans; (these are all) called signs, because by way of them one gets an indication of their Creator, Glorified and Exalted be He. Due to this, Aboo Al-‘Itaahiyah said:

How strange is it how the Ilah (i.e. Allaah) is disobeyed

Or the insolent one can be insolent towards Him

In everything there is a sign of Him

Indicating that He is One

For Allaah, within every moving and still being

From Mankind, there is a witness

How can one be insolent against Allaah the Majestic and High, and say: “There is no Lord for this entire universe; these created beings came into existence by another creator.” And if they did come into existence with another creator, then who is this Creator other than Allaah the majestic and High; inform me?! You will not find a creator other than Allaah the Glorified and High.

Or do they assign to Allaah partners who created the like of His creation, so that the creation (which they made and His creation) seemed alike to them.” Say: “Allaah is the Creator of all things, He is the One, the Irresistible.” (Ar-Ra’d 13:16)

The Second Type:

Qur’anic Ayat which are recited from the Revelation which was sent down to the Messenger ﷺ. All these are proofs for the Existence of the Lord, Glorified and Exalted be He; for His Perfection, His Attributes, His Names, and that He Alone has the right to be worshipped, there being no partners for Him. All of them indicate that; the universal Ayat and the Qur’anic Ayat.

The universal Ayat indicate their Creator, the One Who brought them into existence; the One who Dictates their Affair. The Qur’anic Ayat contain commands to worship Allaah and they contain confirmation of Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyah (Oneness of Lordship) and Tawheed Al-Uloohiyah (Oneness of Allaah’s Worship) is derived from them as is the command to worship Allaah, the Glorified and High. The entirety of the Qur’aan revolves around this matter and it was revealed for the sake of this affair.

From His signs are the night and the day and the sun and the moon. These are from the greatest of His signs, Glorified and Exalted be He. The dark night which covers this creation and the radiant day which enlightens this creation so that the people spread out engaging in their occupations. The Most High said:

Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): “Tell me! If Allaah made night continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is an Ilah (a god) besides Allaah who could bring you light? Will you not then hear?” Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): “Tell me! If Allaah made day continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is an Ilah (a god) besides Allaah who could bring you night wherein you rest? Will you not then see?” It is out of His Mercy that He has put for you night and day, that you may rest therein (i.e. during the night) and that you may seek of His Bounty (i.e. during the day), and in order that you may be grateful. (Al-Qasas 28:71-73)

This is from the greatest signs of Allaah; this night and this day. The entire time does not consist of night nor does the entire time consist of day. This is because if the affair was like this then the benefits of the servants would be suspended and they will be exhausted.

Allaah has made for them the night and the day following each other in succession. Moreover, the night and the day are organized and neither of them differ nor do they change to the organizational structure of the other. From that which indicates the wisdom of the All-Wise (Glorified and Exalted be He, is that the actions of the servants and their concoctions will be destroyed and become mixed up, whatever they may be, and they will cease. As for the creations of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic, they will not fall apart except at a time wherein Allaah allows for them to fall apart.

So the night and the day run perpetually and neither of them break down; whereas the concoctions of the creation break down, malfunction, and expire; even if they are big and strong.

How many abandoned cars, planes, and trains do you see, whilst they were strong and useful; however, they expired and broke down. Do the night or the day break down? No. This is because their Manufacturer is All-Capable and All-Wise, Majestic and High be He.

The Work of Allaah, Who perfected all things, verily! He is Well-Acquainted with what you do.

Examine carefully the speech of everyone you hear from in your time particularly

Blessed be He Who sent down the criterion (of right and wrong, i.e. this Quran) to His slave (Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) that he may be a warner to the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns). 25:1

Words Worthy Of Being Written In Gold

All praise is for Allaah, Lord of all the Worlds, who ordered us to follow His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and to call to His Way, and may Allaah send praises and blessings of peace upon our Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), and upon his family, his Companions, and those who truly follow them until the Day of Judgment.

ImaamAbu Muhammadal Barbahaaree (d. 329 H rahimahullaah), said in his Sharh Us-Sunnah :

May Allaah have mercy upon you! Examine carefully the speech of everyone you hear from in your time particularly. So do not act in haste and do not enter in anything from it until you ask and see: Did any of the Companions of the Prophet, may Allaah’s praise and salutations be upon him, speak about it, or did any of the scholars? So if you find a narration from them about it, cling to it, do not go beyond it for anything and do not give precedence to anything over it and thus fall into the Fire.

In Explanation to the above Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (haafidthahullaah) mentioned :

Do not be hasty in accepting as correct what you may hear from the people especially in these later times.  As now there are many who speak about so many various matters, issue rulings and ascribing to themselves both knowledge and the right to speak. This is especially the case after the emergence and spread of new modern day media technologies. Such that everyone now can speak and bring forth that which is in truth worthless; by this meaning words of no true value – speaking about whatever they wish in the name of knowledge and in the name of the religion of Islaam.

It has even reached the point that you find the people of misguidance and the members of the various groups of misguidance and deviance from the religion speaking as well. Such individuals have now become those who speak in the name of the religion of Islaam through means such as the various satellite television channels. Therefore be very cautious!

It is upon you O Muslim, and upon you O student of knowledge individually, to verify matters and not rush to embrace everything and anything you hear.

It is upon you to verify the truth of what you hear, asking, ‘Who else makes this same statement or claim?’, ‘Where did this thought or concept originate or come from?’, ‘Who is its reference or source authority?’

Asking what are the evidences which support it from within the Book and the Sunnah? And inquiring where has the individual who is putting this forth studied and taken his knowledge from? From who has he studied the knowledge of Islaam?

Each of these matters requires verification through inquiry and investigation, especially in the present age and time. As it is not every speaker who should rightly be considered a source of knowledge, even if he is well-spoken and eloquent, and can manipulate words captivating his listeners.

Do not be taken in and accept him until you are aware of the degree and scope of what he possesses of knowledge and understanding. As perhaps someone’s words may be few, but possesses true understanding, and perhaps another will have a great deal of speech yet he is actually ignorant to such a degree that he doesn’t actually possess anything of true understanding. Rather he only has the ability to enchant with his speech so that the people are deceived. Yet he puts forth the perception that he is a scholar, that he is someone of true understanding and comprehension, that he is a capable thinker, and so forth. Through such means and ways, he is able to deceive and beguile the people, taking them away from the way of truth. Therefore what is to be given true consideration is not the amount of the speech put forth or that one can extensively discuss a subject. Rather the criterion that is to be given consideration is what that speech contains within it of sound authentic knowledge, what it contains of the established and transmitted principles of Islaam.

As perhaps a short or brief statement which is connected to or has a foundation in the established principles can be of greater benefit than a great deal of speech which simply rambles on, and through hearing you can’t actually receive very much benefit from.

This is the reality which is present in our time; one sees a tremendous amount of speech which only possesses within it a small amount of actual knowledge. We see the presence of many speakers yet few people of true understanding and comprehension.’

Question About Fitnah (trials and tribulation)/ Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan

Question About Fitnah (trials and tribulation)/ Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan

[Watch Video Here]

Question posed to Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him):

Q. May Allaah bestow good upon you. How can we differentiate between blameworthy silence regarding fitan (trials and tribulation) and praiseworthy non-involvement in it?

A. “Al-Fitan, no one should speak about it except for the people of knowledge and insight. Not everyone is to speak concerning it. If the ignorant speak regarding the Fitan the Fitan increases. As for the case if the scholars were to speak about the fitan and clarify it, then it will decrease by the permission of Allaah. Therefore in relation to fitan, not everyone is to speak concerning it. Rather the only ones that are to speak concerning the fitan are the people of knowledge and insight, those who know the truth from falsehood. And they know how to speak (concerning the fitan). It is not for everyone to speak concerning the fitan and give religious verdicts regarding it. Na’am.”
