Question:

People who subscribe to knowledge and especially young students look down upon Fiqh-matters and especially the books of the Madhâhib. Their argument is that they do not consist of evidence. They even look down upon the Ijtihâd of the Imams in this matter. What do you advise in terms of this and the respect for the Imams of the Madhâhib and the importance of the Madhâhib. There are people today who look down upon them, criticize them and say that they are freed from the Madhâhib and that they take directly from the Qur’ân and Sunnah.

Shaykh al-Fawzân:

It is a deviation. We have said that and clarified it. We said that the one who fulfils the conditions of Ijtihâd does Ijtihâd. He is not allowed to follow blindly. THESE ARE HOWEVER FEW TODAY, IF THEY EVEN EXIST. The more time passes, the more the knowledge disappears. The prophet (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Allâh does not seize this knowledge by pulling it out from the chests of men. It is seized by the death of the scholars. When there then are no scholar left, the people take the ignorant as leaders who in turn will answer without knowledge and go astray and lead others astray.”

The more time passes, the more the knowledge disappears. It has also been reported that by the end of time, few scholars will exist and many readers [will exist]. Many readers who lack understanding will exist.

It is wrong to ignore the Fiqh-books. Fiqh is the richness of this Ummah. It is a great richness. However, that does not mean that we take everything that is in them to heart. We filter (I.e. right from mistakes). The one who has the capacity filters. He takes that which is strongest according to the evidence. We said that there are four types of people; an absolute Mujtahid, a Mujtahid within his Madhhab who considers what opinion is the correct one, one who follows blindly and a layman. This fiqh is, as said, a great richness in the hands of the scholars. They study it and take help from it in order to understand the Qur’ân and Sunnah. They take its verdicts and the statements of the Imams that agree with the evidence and leave that which contradicts the evidence.

As for the one who ignores it and says that they shall do a new Ijtihâd… Who is the one who is to make a new Ijtihâd? There is none! It is a deviation. Are you who say that you shall make a new Ijtihâd as the four Imams? Such as Imâm Ahmad and Imâm Mâlik? What does this mean? I wish that they existed. But you don’t have more than the smallest who follows blindly. You have nothing to come with. Don’t destroy yourself. Don’t destroy others. Fear Allâh! It is allowed to blindly follow in necessity. Allâh (ta’âlâ) said:

فَاسْأَلُواْ أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ

“So ask the people of the message if you do not know.” (16:43)

This is a blind following in necessity. It is OBLIGATORY to blindly follow in necessity. It is prohibited to blindly follow in the case of capability. It is forbidden for the one who is able to make Ijtihâd to blindly follow. In necessity, it is obligatory to blindly follow. It is not fully prohibited to blindly follow and neither is it fully allowed to blindly follow. The matter is thusly detailed. We do not say that you should take to heart everything that exists in Fiqh. We say that you should filter and follow that which is based on evidence. They are after all more knowledgeable than you about proving and the extraction of rulings. You have nothing to come with. You should rely on them and the words of the Fuqahâ’ and look to their evidence. If you are able to consider, do so. If you are not able to, you follow that which is (written) there even if you do not know of the evidence. For this is a necessity. This has to be understood. There are people who fight the Madhâhib today. Where should the people go? Should they deviate? There is one who has authored a book by the name “Islâm without Madhâhib”. What without Madhâhib? Where should the people go then? Should they go to the ignoramuses? This is a great problem.

Installing a Satellite Dish to Watch the News – Explained by Shaykh Fawzan

Installing a Satellite Dish to Watch the News
Explained by Shaykh Fawzan

[Watch the Video with English Titles Here]

Question:

O noble Shaykh there are numerous questions surrounding one topic here is one of the questions. What is the ruling on the person who installs a satellite dish in his home just for the news or to listen to Al Jazeera channel?

Shaykh Fawzan:

The news is obtained without a satellite dish, it can be obtained in the newspaper, it can be obtained on the radio, and it can be obtained on Saudi television that which is not on satellite. It is obtained without a satellite dish.

The satellite dish brings about evil upon him and upon others such as his children and his family. Thus its evil is greater than its benefit, if there is any benefit. The evil outweighs it. Thus do not install it in the home due to its pure evil or its preponderant evil.

And the affair is not limited to him, rather it will corrupt his family, all of them, the young and the old, except those whom Allah has mercy upon. And he is responsible for them. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The head of household is a shepherd and he is responsible for his flock. Who will question him? He will be questioned by Allah the Exalted on the Day of Judgment.

Thus it is not permissible for him to install a satellite dish in his home using the argument of watching the news. The news is obtained by many means that do not contain corruption.

And then, what is the news? Most of it is fraudulent and lies, so what will he benefit from it?

He destroys his home in order to get the news? The news, most of it is lies and most of it is incitement and evil. So he should not destroy his home and corrupt his family for the purpose of this false claim.

And the Al Jazeera channel has a great deal of evil; it contains a great deal of evil and incitement. And they bring people who fumble about in the affairs of the religion and in issues of jurisprudence. And they make impermissible what Allah has made permissible or they make permissible what Allah has made impermissible, in their verdicts. Thus this is a great evil to listen to and watch the Al Jazeera channel. Its evil is wide spread now and everything associated with it is evil, and no one praises it.

Aqeedah and Manhaj Are One – Shaykh Raslaan

Aqeedah and Manhaj Are One
Shaykh Raslaan (hafidhahullaah)

Once after an evening class with Shaykh Muhammad Sa’eed Raslaan (May Allah preserve him and his family upon good), I asked him a question regarding Manhaj. I told Ash-Shaykh that sometimes we hear in the west, a person being described as being sound upon Aqeedah, but corrupt in Manhaj or that he is corrupt in Aqeedah, but sound upon Manhaj.

Shaykh Raslaan laughed upon hearing this.

He said, Aqeedah and Manhaj are one. Aqeedah and Manhaj are one. He said that if one is sound in Aqeedah, then he is sound in Manhaj, and if he is corrupt in Aqeedah, he is corrupt in Manhaj. He said, if he is sound in Manhaj, he is sound in Aqeedah, and if he is corrupt in Manhaj, than he is corrupt in Aqeedah.

Ash-Shaykh added, Manhaj comes from Aqeedah, it comes forth from Aqeedah. Manhaj is wide, very wide. But, it still comes from Aqeedah, which is even wider. He added, for ones’ Manhaj to be sound, then his Aqeedah must be sound. Indeed they are one.

Meeting the Scholars on Hajj: A Discussion between Shaykh Fawzan and Shaykh Abdur Razzaq Al Badr

From the Benefits of Hajj: Meeting the Scholars
Shaykh Abdur Razzaq Al Badr speaks with Shaykh Fawzan

Host: We have the Noble Scholar Doctor Shaykh Abdul Razzaq Abdul Al Muhsin Al Badr with us on the line; he is in Medina the city of the Prophet. Please proceed Shaykh Abdul Razzaq.

Shaykh Abdul Razzaq: As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatuAllahi wa barakatahu

Shaykh Fawzan and the host: wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatuAllahi wa barakatahu

Shaykh Abdul Razzaq: Hayaak Allah Shaykh Salih.

Shaykh Fawzan: How are you?

Shaykh Abdul Razzaq: May Allah preserve you, may Allah bless you.

Shaykh Fawzan: How is your father?

Shaykh Abdul Razzaq: My father is good and he gives you the greetings of Salaam.

Shaykh Fawzan: May Allah give us all Salaam.

Shaykh Abdul Razzaq: Hayaak Allahu

Shaykh Fawzan: May Allah bless you

Shaykh Abdul Razzaq: In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful. All praises belong to Allah the Lord of all that exist, and may the prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his Family and his Companions, all together. As to what follows:

From that which known; is that Hajj is tremendous obligation and a noble opportunity to meet with the people of knowledge and to benefit from them. I read in Siyar A’lam Al-Nubala in the biography of Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Ali Al Baqir he said: Verily my desire to meet Amr bin Dinaar increases my Hajj because surely he loves us and he benefits us. And I read some notes also by Al-Dhahabi, may Allah have mercy upon him, he said there was a large contingent of students of hadith who would embark upon Hajj their motivation being meeting Sufyan ibn Uyaanah and other than him from the Imaam of the Scholars. Thus this is a noble opportunity while we are headed towards pilgrimage at the House of Allah the Haram. If we could have a brief look from our Shaykh, while we are now as the brother know at the end of this program, at the importance of honoring the people of knowledge, connecting with them, taking from them, and not proceeding them, and being diligent upon taking religious verdicts from qualified among them. I ask Allah the Exalted to bring about benefit through his knowledge and to make him firm upon his efforts and to be kind to him. Verily He answers the supplications. As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu.

Shaykh Fawzan: wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatuAllahi wa barakatahu.

That which you pointed out, that Hajj is an opportunity to meet the people of knowledge, yes this is correct. It is an opportunity to meet the people of knowledge from the East of the earth to the West of it. And this is from the benefits of Hajj. As Allah the Exalted said:

{28} لِيَشْهَدُوا مَنَافِعَ لَهُمْ

That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them. (Soorah Al Hajj 22:28)

Thus from the greatest benefits of Hajj is meeting the Scholars, and benefiting from their knowledge and their virtue, their love, and connecting with them. One of them could be in the East and one of them in the West and the people yearn to see them, so he comes to Hajj and they come to Hajj and thus they gather together. Therefore this is from the greatest benefits of Hajj, meeting with the people of knowledge, and the people of virtue, and benefiting from them, and renewing the love between the hearts. This is from the benefits of the great Hajj. Acquaintance between the pilgrims; between the brothers from the East and the West of the earth and benefiting from each other. Even the Scholars benefit from each other, by the reminders and the lessons, and presenting the problems between them. Not to mention the common people those who are in need of asking questions to the people of knowledge. At any rate this Hajj is a great opportunity. And this is from the divine wisdom in Hajj, there occurs the meeting between the Muslims from the East and the West despite their different colors, and languages, and understanding, and knowledge. Thus this one will benefit from that one.

Innovators are like scorpions
Explained by Shaykh Fawzan

[Click Here to Watch the Video]

Question: The questioner says: What is the meaning of the statement from some of the Salaf: The innovatorsare like the scorpion, he buries his head while leaving his tail out, such that when he is able to, he stings?

Shaykh Fawzan:

Yes. This speech is clear. The people of innovation have with them hypocrisy. The people of innovation have been afflicted with hypocrisy. And it is that they display good while they hide evil, they display good to the people as a way of deception.

يُخَادِعُونَ اللّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

They try to deceive Allah and those who believe…(SoorahAl-Baqarah 2:9)

And they conceal the evil. And when they have the ability to spread evil, they spread it, just like the scorpion.
