Question:
This question has come via the web; it says: May Allaah treat you well; what is the ruling on shaving the chin; meaning, the beard; or shortening it, or lining it, may Allaah reward you with good?
Answer:
Shaving the beard is not permissible. SHAVING IT IS HARAAM! The Prophet ﷺ says:
جُزُّوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَاعْفُوا اللِّحَى
“Trim the Moustache and grow the beard.”
أَرْخُوا اللِّحَى
“Let the beards grow.”
وَفِّرُوا اللِّحَى
“Let the beards grow fully.”
خَالِفُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ
“Differ from the polytheists.”
Hence, shaving the beards contains imitation of the polytheists. And the “polytheists” here refers to the people of the Book; the Jews and the Christians. This does not mean that if there are now individuals from them who grow their beards that we, in efforts to be different from them, shave our beards; no. The Prophet ﷺ has clarified the basis regarding which is the reason that this Hadeeth has come; and it is that these people would shave their beards. Likewise, the Persians would shave their beards; i.e. the people of Persia; and they would let their moustaches grow thick and lengthen them. So the Prophet ﷺ has commanded us with that. So when they let it grow then they have returned to the Fitrah and they have come to our path, which is the Fitrah. Na’am.
The point is that it is not permissible to shave the beard, which is referred to as shaving the chin. As for shortening it, then likewise, this is not permissible, while it is lighter than removing it completely. This is because to remove it completely is imitation of these people and it is, as well, an imitation of the women. This is because Allaah the Majestic and High has honored the men by placing this trait within them; which is the beard, and it indicates masculinity and manliness. So the one who removes it imitates the women, and we ask Allaah for security and safety.
So the peril of removing it is great and it is a great evil, and taking from it is prohibited, however, without doubt it is lighter than the former. For by way of the former, there does not remain any sign of manliness upon the face.
They have increased upon this today; they (even) shave their moustaches and their beards. We ask Allaah for security and safety. This is imitation of the disbelievers; the west. The west, this is known amongst them. The first amongst whom this was known, as is said, was French. Then it entered thereafter into the lands of the Muslims from the lands of Morocco and it came as well from the foreign lands and it entered by way of the lands of Rome into some of the Arab lands. So it came into the lands of Shaam and this occurred which has occurred in this later time. We ask Allaah for security and safety.
Removing the moustache along with the beard is greater and greater in terms of the crime. Because the Prophet ﷺ said:
جُزُّوا الشَّوَارِبَ
“Trim the moustaches.”
He didn’t say: Shave it. According to Imaam Maalik, shaving the moustache was mutilation; mutilating; the person is mutilating the creation of Allaah; and according to him a punishment is meted out for it. So how about today, wherein many people shave their moustache and their beard? They have become smooth faced and clean shaven; you cannot see in his face anything from manliness.
When he sees one who has a beard; one who is upon the Sunnah and upon the Fitrah which the Arabs were upon in their days of Jaahiliyah, you see him, when he sees you saying: “Yaa Dhiqn (O, the chin).” He mocks you; as if he is upon the correct path, whereas the issue is the other way around. Ay Na’am. For these, we ask Allaah for security and safety; we ask Allaah for security and safety. So it is not permissible for the Muslim to do this, O brother questioner.

Advice from Shaykh Uthaymeen to those Who Shave their Beards
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen
Returning to the truth is a virtue. There is no doubt that if we were to give a person a choice between two paths; the path of the Majoos (fire worshippers) or the path of the Prophets, which would he choose? Every believer would choose the path of the Prophets. The Prophets-at the head of them is the seal of them, Muhammad ﷺ-would all let their beards grow, while the Majoos would shave the beard; so choose whichever of the two paths you wish.
Due to this, we do not see that anyone has an excuse, after the truth has been clarified to him, to abandon the truth. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Be different from the Majoos; be different from the polytheists. Let the beards grow fully and trim the mustaches.”
This was the way of the people from aforetime. We did not used to know of anyone who shaved their beards. Rather, it has been said that some of the oppressive rulers would punish an individual by shaving his beard. He would make it to be a punishment! The scholars, may Allaah have mercy upon them, textualized within the books of At-Ta’zeer (punishments) that it is not permissible to punish by shaving the beard. (This is) from that which indicates that some of the oppressive rulers deemed it to be permissible. So how about now? A person blows his wealth on shaving it. He loses out on the most important thing; he loses out on following the Messenger ﷺ and compliance with his command.
We hope for this brother of ours, whom you all respect; we ask Allaah to bless him with guidance, and that he grows his beard in compliance with the command of the Prophet ﷺ and in keeping with his Sunnah.

The One That Takes From His Beard is Not a Student of Knowledge – Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzaan
As Salaamu Alaikum
The questioner says:
It has spread amongst the students of knowledge, i.e. the taking (of hair) from ones beard, so some advice is desired.
Ash-Shaykh Al-`Allaamah Salih Al-Fawzaan:
They are not students of knowledge nor scholars, the ones that take (hair) from the beard are not students of knowledge, the students of knowledge are the ones that act upon the Sunnah, and the Sunnah is to leave the beard, the one that takes from his beard is not from the students of knowledge! Yes.

The third question of Fatwa no. 20317
Q 3: Trimming the beard prevailed among the Multazims (practicing Muslims) youth, as you see them trimming the ends from time to time. Perhaps they belong to religious parties, thus they become an example for the common people to follow. They may rely on weak narrations or some sayings attributed to Ibn `Umar, as well as growing the beard until it reaches the length of the fist.
A: The Sahih (authentic) Hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) indicate the necessity of letting the beard grow as it is, in addition to prohibiting cutting, shortening or trimming it. In this regard, Al-Bukhari and Muslim related in their “Sahih (Authentic Hadith Book)” about Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard grow to be contradictory to the unbelievers. It is mentioned in another narration by Al-Bukhari: Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard grow to be contradictory to the unbelievers. Muslim related in his “Sahih” from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah is reported to have said: Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers. There are other authentic Hadiths in this respect, but the mentioned ones are enough In sha’a-Allah (if Allah wills). The great scholar Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm is reported to have said: “The scholars agreed thattrimming closely the moustache and growing the beard are Fard (obligatory, based on a definitive text)”.
Moreover, the previous Hadiths indicate that it is obligatory to let the beard grow and it is unlawful to cut, shorten or trim it, as the principle in commands is the obligation and the principle in the prohibition is declaring something unlawful. It is not permissible to turn it away from its principle and form except by a valid evidence and proof that can be relied on. There is no evidence or proof against this command. Thus, every Muslim should obey the command and follow the pattern of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) because he had a thick beard, as it was authentically reported about him. It was not reported about any of his Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet), who are the best of all people, that he used to trim his beard except what is reported by `Abdullah ibn `Umar He related that the Messenger of Allah trimmed the part of his beard that exceeds his fist at the time of Hajj. We can not rely on this act with the verification of the authentic Hadiths. `Abdullah ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) related that the Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard grow to be contradictory to the unbelievers. (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). The principle of the evidence is the narration of the relater not his acts and Ijtihad (juristic efforts to infer expert legal rulings). The scholars said that the authentic narration of the Sahabah and their successors about the Prophet (peace be upon him) is the supporting evidence, and it is more reliable than the relater’s opinion if his opinion contradicts the Sunnah (whatever is reported from the Prophet). In this case, we rely on his narration of the Sunnah not of his act upon the Sunnah.
As for the narration of Al-Tirmidhy that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) “used to trim the length and width of his beard”, it is not only a weak Isnad (chain of narrators)of Hadith, but it is also Batil (false) and rejected. This is not authentically known about the Prophet (peace be upon him). As this Hadith is related by `Umar ibn Harun Al-Balkhy, who is Matruk (a narrator whose Hadith transmission was discarded due to unreliability) and accused of lying, this Hadith cannot be taken as evidence. Thus, the acts of these youth should not be followed. However, they and all of the Muslims should obey the commands of the Prophet (peace be upon him), avoid disobeying him, or imitating the enemies of Allah and His Messenger and avoid imitating women. A human being should be a good pattern in his sayings and actions. It is necessary to advise those who breach the commands of Allah and His Messenger, urging them to obey Allah and His Messenger and to avoid their prohibitions.
May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
