Question:

I borrowed 20,000 Pakistani Rupees, which were worth 7,000 Saudi Riyals at that time, from my brother. I now want to settle my debt, but the debt of 20,000 Pakistani Rupees is now worth 2,000 Saudi Riyals. Is it permissible for me to repay him with 2,000 Riyals or do I have to give him 7,000 Riyals according to the value when I borrowed it, or is it obligatory on me to give it to him in Pakistani Rupees, the same currency that I borrowed from him?

Answer:

It is obligatory on you to return the money that you borrowed from your brother in the same currency you took it from him, regardless of whether its value has risen or fallen against other currencies.

You therefore have to give him 20,000 Pakistani Rupees, no more or less, for the 20,000 Pakistani Rupees you borrowed. You have to give him what equals its value at the time of the repayment in another currency, such as in Saudi Riyals or another currency, on the condition that it is done in one session. This is based on the answer which the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave to the inquirer who asked him whether it was permissible to sell Dirhams (a dirham of silver equals 2.975 grams of silver) for Dinars (old Arab coin that equals 2.975 grams of gold) or Dinars for Dirhams. He (peace be upon him) said, “There is nothing wrong with taking them at the current rate so long as you do not separate leaving something to be settled.”

Question: What would you advise us during this time in which much trials and tribulations have become apparent, the people of innovation have (also) spread, and the scholars are passing away?

Answer: The first thing that I advise is that you fear Allah the Most High. I likewise advise you to increase in your supplication that Allah makes us and you firm upon the religion, and that He protects us from the evil of these trials and tribulations.

Secondly, I advise you to seek knowledge from the people of knowledge, and be diligent in doing so. Indeed the only thing that would save one from these trials and tribulations is correct knowledge. If you do not gain correct knowledge, it is possible that you will fall into the fitna and you will not realize it. Therefore, it is upon you to seek knowledge from the people of knowledge, and you should not become lazy; as it relates to seeking knowledge, to the best of your ability.

Shaikh Zaid al Madkhali said in a book titled: Al Kenz al Thameen (The Precious Treasure)
It is upon the people of knowledge of this Ummah – the inheritors of the generous Prophets, the great Messengers, the beauty and stars of the earth – it is upon them to prepare themselves to spread the guidance of Allah; that which Allah guides whom He wills from amongst His servants all over the world, North to South, East to West! It is upon them not to hesitate in exerting all means that can be used to propagate and spread the religion. They should be vigorous in benefitting the people with good so that groups and individuals can live good, blessed lives. (By way of this knowledge and propagation) the disbeliever will enter into Islam, the headless person will awaken, the ignorant person will learn, the confused person will gain insight, and the open sinner will become shy from Allah! How many people are affected by these calamities these days, and how few are the doctors who have the ability to treat their wounds, and cure their illnesses of desires and doubts, while seeking the face of Allah and His Jennah!

Question:

Who has more right to be the imam for the prayer? Is it the young boy who has not reached puberty but he has (memorized) half of the Quran or is it the adult who has (memorize) five juz (of Quran) but he also has (knowledge) from the sunnah just as Aqeedah (belief), hadeeth and fiqh? May Allaah keep you firm.

Answer:

The oldest is more preferable as long as he has from the Quran what suffices for the prayer. He is preferred over the young. Only if the young is the most proficient in Quran amongst the others present then he is put forth.

Take the test!

Shaykh Abdur Rahman Al Mu’alami—may Allah have mercy upon him—said when speaking about resisting the desires:

Suppose you heard someone insulted the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and another man insulted Dawud عليه السلام and a third man insulted Umar or Ali رضي ألله عنهما and a fourth man insulted your Imaam, and another man insulted another Imaam; would your wrath and pursuit of punishing and condemning them be consistent with the Islamic Sharia?

Meaning your wrath for the man who insulted the first two (Prophet Muhammad and Prophet Dawud, peace be upon them) should be almost equal to each other and much more severe than your wrath for the others. Your wrath for the man who insulted Umar or Ali should be less than the first two but greater than the others. And your wrath for the man who insulted your Imaam and the other Imaam should be similar to each other and much less than your wrath for those who insulted those before them.

On the authority of Ibn Umar who said: ‘A man came to the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said: ‘

O Messenger of Allaah! Which of the people are the most beloved to Allaah and which of the actions are most beloved to Allaah?’

The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘The most beloved of the people to Allaah are the most beneficial for the people. The most beloved of actions to Allaah –Azza wa Jal- are to cause happiness to reach a Muslim, to relieve him from a hardship, to settle a debt for a Muslim or to repel hunger from him. For me to walk with a brother in order to assist him is more beloved to me than to make ‘Itikaf in this Masjid (Masjid al-Madeenah) for a month.

Whoever holds back his anger then Allaah hides his mistakes. Whoever suppresses his anger – even though he is not scared to show it, but withholds due to the truth – Allaah fills his heart with hope on the day of Judgement. Whoever walks with his brother to assist him with a need until he has helped him completely, then Allaah plants his feet firmly on the day people will not stand firmly. Indeed bad behaviour spoils good actions, just as vinegar spoils honey.’

Question: The sinners who enter the Fire and Allaah punishes them by way of it and then their end result is Paradise; what is the state of their wives who are in Paradise? Will they be waiting for them to come out of the Fire or what?

Answer: As has come within the Hadeeth, the woman shall be for her husband in Paradise. So when these people come out of the Fire and enter Paradise, what is obvious is that their wives shall be for them; for they are each for the people of Paradise; even if one of them were to precede the other in entrance and the other comes later. That which is apparent, and Allaah knows best, is that those who were married in the Dunyaa they shall be married in the Hereafter; whether they enter Paradise together or one of them precedes the other and the other comes later.

Question: A woman married a young man on the basis that he was upon the noble legislation and that he was Salafee; then she discovered that he was an innovator. The Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

كل بدعة ضلالة وكل ضلالة في النار

“Every innovation is misguidance and every misguidance is in the Fire.”

So is she to stay with him in spite of his deviation or leave him? What is your advice?

Answer: If the matter were in her hand then she could simply leave him (i.e., pronounce divorce upon him). However, the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

إنما الطلاق بيد من أخذ بالساق

“The divorce in only in the hand of the one who takes hold of the leg. (i.e., the man)”

It is upon her to get a Khul’ (annulment) from him if she wants to be free of him and his Bid’ah.

Our beloved teacher, Sheikh Saleh bin Fowzan al Fowzan was asked the following question 2 weeks ago (12 Rabe’a ath Thani 1435h | 12 February 2014):

In England, we have some masajid (plural of masjid) which invite students of knowledge whom are upon the methodology of the Sunnah, for the purpose of teaching Tawheed or to give lectures on Tawheed. The following day (thereafter), the same masajid will invite a teacher whom follows the Sufi or Ash’aree methodology, and that person will teach their methodology to the people. Is it permissible for the Sunni caller/teacher to accept such an invitation and teach in these masajid?

The Sheikh responded:

No, this is not permissible. If these masajid merge (the teachings and lectures of) the Sunni teacher and an innovator or a deviant, it is not permissible for the Sunni teacher to accept this invitation. This is because, these masajid are actually using him as a disguise and they are covering themselves by way of him. They say (to the people): We teach Tawheed and we listen to lectures in Tawheed!

This action is not correct because it is a combination of truth and falsehood. The Sunni teacher can only accept the invitation after they agree to his condition. He must impose a condition upon them and inform them that he will only teach and deliver lectures, if they agree that they will not invite individuals whom are in opposition to what he is teaching and calling them to (of the truth).

Question:

The questioner asks what is the ruling on the one who does Yoga exercises?

Answer:

If he is ignorant then he is to be taught. If he is upon their belief system then he is a pagan. This is because yoga exercises are nothing more than the worship of the sun. Therefore, this is from the polytheistic acts of worship. So they do it in the form of exercise but it is from those things which are, in reality, worship with the pagans. So YOGA IS HARAAM! And it is from polytheism. However, he who is ignorant and blindly following then he is to be taught and it is to be clarified to him. After being taught, if he does it believing in it then he has disbelieved. If he does it just for exercise then this person is a Faasiq (evil-doer) who is near to becoming a disbeliever. So take heed to this, may Allaah safeguard you. And Allaah knows best.

Imam Ibn Bhattah al ‘Abkari (رحمه الله) stated:

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: If you hear of the Dajjal, then avoid him to the best of your ability. Indeed a man will approach him (the Dajjal), and this man deems himself to be a believer. The Dajjal will continue to affect him until he eventually follows him due to what he witnesses of doubts.

Imam Ibn Bhattah commented:

This is the statement of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم), and indeed he is the truthful person, and one to be trusted. So fear Allah of Muslims! Do not let anyone allow his good thoughts of himself, and that which he feels he knows of his correct methodology, don’t allow this to make him bring about danger to his religion, by sitting with some people of desires. This person says: I will debate with them, or I will expose his (false) ideology.

Indeed, their fitna is greater than that of the Dajjal, their speech is stickier than the scab, and its burning of the hearts is more intense than the burning of firewood. We have seen individuals who used to curse them (the people of desires and innovation), and belittle them, but then then sat with them to refute and respond to them. These innovators continued to be simple with them, and hide their deceptive plots and obscure disbelief until those people who intended to refute them began to follow them!

I was informed by Al Mutawthee…… on the authority of Mughira, who said: Muhammad bin Sa’eeb – and he was not a person of desire – said to us: Come with us so that we can listen to them (the innovators and respond to them). He (Muhammad bin Sa’eeb) did not return until he had adapted their ideologies and his heart became attached to them!

Shaykh Uthaymeen: In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful. The author—may Allah have mercy upon him—said concerning what has been narrated by Abu Huraira—may Allah be pleased with him; the Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

رُبَّ أَشْعَثَ أَغْبَرَ مَدْفُوعٍ بِالْأَبْوَابِ لَوْ أَقْسَمَ عَلَى اللَّهِ لَأَبَرَّهُ

“Many a person who are disheveled, dusty, and driven away from doors, if they were to swear by Allah (that something would happen), Allah will certainly make it happen”.

‘Disheveled’ is a description of the hair, meaning their hair is disheveled. They don’t have that which will beautify their hair or comb it. And they do not give great importance to their appearance.

‘Dusty’ meaning dust colored, their garment is dusty, and this is due to their severe poverty.

‘Driven away from doors’ meaning he has no relevance. When he goes to the people and seeks permission to enter, he is not given permission, thus they close the door on him. If they open the door and find this person standing there, they shove the door in his face, because he has no valve in the sight of the people, but he has valve with the Lord of all that exists.

If they were by swear by Allah (that something would happen), Allah will certainly make it happen. If they were to say: ‘By Allah such and such will not happen’; then it will not happen. And if they were to say: ‘By Allah such and such will happen’; then it will happen.

If they were to swear by Allah (that something would happen), Allah will certainly make it happen. This is due to their nobility and status with Allah.

What was the cause of them reaching this level? Because perhaps there will be a person who is disheveled, dusty and driven away from doors and if they were to swear by Allah (that something would happen) Allah will not make it happen. While there are other people who are disheveled, dusty, and driven away from doors if they were to swear by Allah (that something would happen), Allah will certainly make it happen.

Therefore what is the criterion? The criterion is Taqwa of Allah the Exalted.

As Allah the Exalted said:

إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ

Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.

(Soorah Al-Hujurat 49:13)

Thus whoever has the most Taqwa, then he is the most honorable with Allah. Allah will make their affairs easy. He will answer their Dua’a, and remove harm from them, and He will cause their oaths to come to pass.

Shaykh Rabee’ ibn Haadee Al-Madkhalee

Question: May Allaah treat you well. Our Shaykh, may Allaah preserve you. Many are those whom we had good thought about and deemed them to be from the protectors of the Salafee Da’wah and the callers to it, then it became clear to us that they are from the opposers of it. So what are the reasons which lead to that in your view? We heard something of this within your speech, however, (we present the question) so that it will not be said that we had no concern for the questions of some of the brothers.

Answer: From the reasons for it—and the refuge is with Allaah—is desires. A person may know the truth and know its people and know its evidences; then he changes. What is the reason? The reason is misguidance form Allaah the Blessed and High (i.e., Allaah allowing him to stray). He whom Allaah guides there is not to misguide and he whom Allaah allows to stray there is no guidance for him. The people of desires only come by way of desires.

Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his Ilah (god), and Allaah knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. (Al-Jathiyah 45:23)

Al-Hawaa الهوى (i.e., desires) يهوي causes the person to sink and makes him deviate from the path. Also, from the reasons is the love of material things. The love of material things; love of status and position. He sees the people of Salafiyyah to be poor and he wants to be from the great ones; he wants to have wealth; he wants position; and so he changes. May Allaah bless you. Allaahu Akbar! (Due to) desires which are followed and greed which is obeyed. The Prophet, upon him be prayers ad peace, said:

اتقوا فتنا كقطع الليل المظلم يمسي الرجل مؤمنا و يصبح كافرا أو يصبح مؤمنا و يمسي كافرا يبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا

Fear the Fitnah which is like a patch of a dark night. A man will go into the evening as a believer and wake up in the morning as a Kaafir. Or he will wake up in the morning as a believer and go into the evening as a Kaafir; and he will sell his religion for a portion of the Dunyaa.

Look. He goes into the evening as a believer and in the morning he changes. We don’t say that he is a Kaafir. He (may) wake up in the morning as an innovator! A Hizbee! A Murji’ee! A Qadaree! And so on; all for the sake of desires and for the sake of the love of wealth. He sells his religion for a portion of the Dunyaa.

He sees a group from the groups; they have wealth; they have position, and so on, while they (he and the Salafees) are a poor group, they do not have position or wealth, and he wants to enjoy the life of this world, so desires and the love of the Dunyaa take him away. Allaahu Akbar!

Within the Hadeeth, may Allaah bless you, which comes to mind as it relates to this issue:

ما ذئبان أرسلا في زريبة غنم بأفسد لها من حرص المرء على المال والشرف لدينه

Two wolves let loose in a sheep’s pen in not more dangerous than the craving of wealth and status is to a person’s religion.

The love of wealth; craving wealth, and craving status corrupts the religion of a person greatly and destroys him just as two hungry wolves which are let loose in a sheep’s pen. What will remain from them (the sheep)?! They will be annihilated and eaten. Similarly, this person, nothing will remain from his religion—and the refuge is with Allaah—except that which Allaah wills. May Allaah give you life.

Question:

May Allah grant you good O noble Shaykh. What was the position of the Companions during the time of Umar—may Allah be pleased with them—concerning the statues and monuments present in Egypt during this present time?

Shaykh Fawzan:

Initially these objects were not worshipped, they were merely ruins, the tombs of the Pharaohs; they were not idols. These tombs of the Pharaohs were built upon their graves. Thus this was a matter of construction over the tombs, they were not worshipped.

Also removing them is very difficult. The Companions did not have the ability to remove the Sphinx, it is a mountain; they did not have the ability to do this.

Also there are those who say during the era of the Companions it was buried and covered with sand, and it was not visible.

Smashing statues is clear in the Book of Allah the Exalted. Ibrahim peace be upon him smashed the idols and the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him—when he conquered Mecca—smashed the idols which were inside the Kaabah and those outside of Mecca.

Destroying idols is obligatory upon the Muslims if they have the ability, if they are able to do this. Also this issue is not restricted to statues, it also relates to the structures over graves; the shrines which are now being worshipped instead of Allah. They come first, and they are destroyed. This is based upon the statement of the Prophet peace be upon him:

لاَ تَدَعَ قَبْرًا مُشْرِفًا إِلاَّ سَوَّيْتَهُ
Do not leave any grave elevated without leveling it. (Collected by Tirmidi 1049)

Thus do not limit it to only destroying statues, rather statues are destroyed and graves are destroyed also. Remove the structures which have lamps and writings on them and make the graves ordinary such that they do not draw attention. As for destroying the statues while the shrines remain, this is inadequate and does not meet the required objective. This does not meet the required goal.

Advice to the Youth and Parents regarding Al-Walaa wal-Baraa’ – Shaykh Muhammad ‘Akkoor

Question:

We have here in America, films which contain magic. From the most popular of them is a film called Harry Potter. The individual Harry Potter is the hero of the movie. He is a youth, but he is a great magician. The disbelievers within this land love him and some of the Muslim youth are put to trial with these movies. What is your advice to these youth as it relates to these movies and likewise, what is your advice to the parents who allow the children to watch these movies? Benefit us, may Allaah bless you.

Answer:

All the praise is for Allaah. This is a problem. When the Muslim youth watches these films which contain various types of magic; or are named after magicians; or contain the actions of magicians, then he will be affected by them and he will grow up upon them (these movies). Then if one comes in the future and it is said to him that this is not permissible he won’t be convinced; because it has become ingrained within his flesh and his blood and has become a part of his life. Due to this, it is proper for the Muslim to be vigilant regarding his children as it relates to these things which are presented by way of the visual media. Because the child has no sense of that which is dangerous; not in ‘Aqeedah nor in terms of (his) associations, or Al-Walaa wal-Baraa’. So this Muslim youth, the least of this affair is that he loves this person; because he is accustomed to seeing him and he is accustomed to that which he says and does such that it became a part of his life. So if we come in the future when he reaches the age of maturity and we said to him that this is Haraam he won’t believe us. If he does believe us then the effect is still within his mind.

You all have something else other than that which is watched. There is upon the clothing, upon the jackets, or upon the things which the men and the women wear there are the names of polytheists, or magicians, or disbelievers. This contains Al-Walaa’ wal-Baraa’ and showing association with this group of people from this perspective. So it obligatory upon the Muslim that his Al-Walaa be for Allaah, the Majestic, and that his Al-Baraa’ be for the sake of Allaah, the Majestic and High. So he loves those whom Allaah loves and he does that which Allaah loves from actions; he loves the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and his companions and the believers; and he hates Shirk and the polytheists. He hates those whom Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, hates. If this is established then this is the basis and the foundation for (goodly) upbringing; in order that the Muslim grows up adhering to his religion; having allegiance for Al-Islaam and its people; avoiding and abandoning Shirk and its people; so that he would not be one who wavers; not being a pure Muslim nor being safe from the deceptions of the polytheists, the magicians, and the atheists.

These people are pleased with the likes of these matters. They are pleased that the Muslim, or the young male or female youth should bear their names or to bear their personality or to carry advertisements for their foundations or businesses, while they do not perceive it. Those who perceive it are the adults and the mature. So it is befitting for us, O beloved ones for Allaah’s sake, that our association be for Al-Islaam and is people; and our disassociation and our distance should be kept from Shirk and its people. We ask Allaah to rectify the offspring for us and for you. He is the One Responsible for that and Capable of doing so.

Question:

Noble Shaykh, if I stand within the congregational prayer and the one standing next to me reeks with the scent of smoke can I change my place after the opening Takbeer and stand in another place if the smell is too much for me?

Answer:

If one is standing in the rank next to a person who has with him a bad smell, from smoke, onions, garlic, sweat, or other than that, and it makes it difficult upon him to perform the prayer in the most complete manner then he may exit from his prayer and go to another place.

However, after clarification of this ruling, we say to everyone who has a foul odor that it is not permissible for him to come to the Masjid; because the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) prohibited that. He prohibited he who has eaten onions or garlic or leek or other than it from that which has a foul smell from coming to the Masjid. Rather, he has said:

لا يقربن مسجدنا
“He is not to come near to our Masjid (who has eaten these things).”[1]

And he informed that that harms the angels. If one who had eaten onions or garlic would come to the Masjid of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) then they would put him out and expel him to Al-Baqee’. This proves that it is not permissible for a person to come to the Masjid bearing a smell that harms the worshippers or the angels; and the people of the Masjid have the right to put him out of the Masjid (if he does).

The point is that it is upon he who desires safety in his religion to beware of innovations, both small and large; and he should not belittle any innovation. As an example, there are those who make light of the innovation of Tasbeeh[1] upon Dhikr beads. Had the companions saw these Dhikr beads they would have repudiated them sternly; as Ibn Mas’ood criticized the people counting out the Takbeer,[2] the Tahleel,[3] the Tasbeeh, and the Tahmeed with the stones. There is no difference between the one who makes Tasbeeh with stones and the one who does so with the Dhikr beads. This one is an innovation and that one is an innovation.

The Dhikr beads is a small innovation in the eyes of some, and they think that it is only disliked and that it (simply) opposes that which is better. But the strongest view is that it is prohibited. The prohibition is from two perspectives:

The First Perspective: It is from the newly invented matters in Dhikr which neither the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did nor did anyone from his companions.

The Second Perspective: The verifiers have affirmed that these Dhikr beads were taken from the Christians and the Hindus. He who enters into the churches of the Christians will find these Dhikr beads. As will he who enters into the temples of the Hindus. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“He who imitates a people is from them.”

So it is not permissible to resemble the polytheists in their practices. This is a great prohibited matter which could lead to Kufr.

Due to this, to use Dhikr beads to make Tasbeeh, Tahleel, and Tahmeed[4] is a prohibited innovation; and he who does it is on the verge of falling into a larger innovation. This is the case of many people. You find him making light of an innovation, then after that you find him falling into big innovations; from Khurooj, which is the Manhaj of the Khawaarij that is based upon declaring the sinners from the Muslims to be disbelievers and deeming their blood to be permissible; as was the case of those people who were making Tasbeeh with the stones. Their end result was the same.

Shaykh Sulayman Ar Ruhaylee:

The believer who sins hoping for forgiveness, is like the person who drinks poison hoping for the antidote after drinking the poison. You will not find a sane person getting some poison, drinking it, and then swallowing it. Then after he swallows it he says: ‘here is the antidote; I’m going to drink it.’ Because he could die before the antidote takes effect.

And you—O slave of Allah—do not know when you are going to die. You could die while you are sinning. And the people will be raised on the Day of Judgment according to what they died upon. Whoever dies reciting the Talbiyah (the call made by the pilgrims on Hajj) will be raised to life reciting the Talbiyah. Whoever dies praying will be raised to life praying. Whoever dies giving Dawah will be raised to life giving Dawah.

Whoever dies fornicating—and with Allah refuge is sought—will be raised to life upon this evil condition. Whoever dies lying will be raised to life upon this evil condition. Whoever dies backbiting will be raised to life upon this evil condition. Whoever dies intoxicated will be raised to life upon this evil condition. Thus the person does not know; he could die while he is sinning.

For this reason it is mentioned that one of the Salaf said while admonishing his student: ‘Whoever can guarantee me he will live to see tomorrow, I grant him permission to sin.’

Whoever can guarantee me that he will live until tomorrow, I grant him permission to sin. Meaning the one from amongst you who will stand and say, I will live to see tomorrow then I grant him permission to commit every sin. Who is able to guarantee this?

By Allah; a person will be strong and healthy and fall dead all of a sudden. How many healthy people have died without any illness! And how many sick people have lived for a long period of time!

Some people become sick, and others go to visit them while believing the person is going to die and they will pray over him. But the one who visits him dies before he does, and his death is announced. And death is sufficient as an admonition.

Questioner:

The milk of the cow is a cure while its meat is a disease. So how do we reconcile between this and the fact that the cow can be used as a sacrificial animal. As it is not possible for the legislation to allow sacrifices from that which is harmful?

Shaykh Al Albani:

Yes, it has been authenticated from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم during his farewell pilgrimage, that he sacrificed a cow for his wives. And it has also been authenticated that he صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ordered us with the fat of the cow and prohibited us from its meat, because its fat is a cure and its meat is a disease. The scholars have reconciled between this hadith and the hadith of his sacrificing the cow for his wives, by stating the intention behind the prohibition of cow’s meat is only referring to consuming large quantities of it. As for eating it sometimes; there is no problem or any harm in this. And it is without any doubt permissible; because the intent behind the prohibition of beef is to consume large quantities of it; and to use beef as a replacement for the meat of sheep, goats and camels. This is the answer of the scholars.

By Shaykh Muhammad Naasir Ad-Deen Al-Albaanee
Transmitted by Saalih ibn Taha Aboo Islaam [1]

One day, he (Shaykh Al-Albaanee, may Allaah have mercy upon him) called me and I was not present, so my small daughter answered; saying, when she picked up the receiver of the phone: “As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaah.” So the Shaykh asked for me, then said to her: “Inform your father that Muhammad Naasir Ad-Deen Al-Albaanee called.”  (He didn’t say: ‘Shaykh.’ This is from his humility, may Allaah elevate his level in Paradise.)

So when I returned home my small daughter informed me (saying): “A man called you named Muhammad Naasir Ad-Deen Al-Albaanee.” So I called him immediately. After he had sought from me that which he wanted, he said to me: “O Aboo Islaam, when I called you, your small daughter answered saying: ‘As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaah.’ Is this action based upon knowledge or is it a personal action from a child? We hope to benefit, O Aboo Islaam.” This was also from his humility and his wisdom in Da’wah, may Allaah have mercy upon him.

I said to him: “This is the action of a child, and the first time (she has done so). That which we know regarding this matter is that the person is to pick up the receiver of the phone saying: Na’am; and one who is calling him is to give Salaams, and he returns the Salaams to him, not that he (the one who is called) initiates the Salaam.” So he, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “This is that which is correct, as far as we know. This is because the caller is similar to the one who is knocking at the door. There is no difference between them.”

Shaykh Sulayman Ar Ruhaylee:

A man from the believers, a person of Tawheed, will be brought forth on the Day of Judgment. It will be said:

اعْرِضُوا عَلَيْهِ صِغَارَ ذُنُوبِهِ وَيُخَبَّأُ عَنْهُ كِبَارُهَا ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ :عَمِلْتَ يَوْمَ كَذَا وَكَذَا , كَذَا، وَهُوَ مُقِرٌّ, لا يُنْكِرُ، وَهُوَ مُشْفِقٌ مِنْ كِبَارِهَا
Present to him his minor sins and conceal from him his major sins. Thus it will be said to him: On this day you did such and such, and this and that. And he will affirm that and he will not deny it. And he will be afraid lest his major sins be presented.

His minor actions will be presented to him, his minor sins. On this day you did such and such, and this and that. And he will affirm that and he will not deny these sins. But his heart will be terrified that his major sins will be mentioned; full of fear from his major sins.

It will be said: Give him in place of every sin he did; a good deed.

It will be said: Give him in place of every sin he did; a good deed. Allah will pardon his sins and honor him by replacing them with good deeds.

Thus he will say: Verily I have sins which I do not see!

After he had been terrified that his major sins would be mentioned, he began to hope they would be mentioned so they would be replaced with good deeds.

So when the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ mentioned that:

ضَحِكَ حَتَّى بَدَتْ نَوَاجِذُهُ
He smiled until his molar teeth became visible.

This was due to the situation of this man. He was terrified, petrified, frightened that his major sins would be mentioned. But when he saw the generosity of Allah, he desired them, so he started to look for them. He said: ‘Verily I have sins which I do not see.’ Meaning: the major sins which were concealed from him. He said this so his major sins could be exchanged for good deeds. So the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ smiled about that until his molar teeth became visible.

This hadith has been collected by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad. And it has been declared authentic by Al Albani.

Questioner: How do we respond to he who uses as proof the action of Ibn ‘Umar and Aboo Hurayrah in taking from the beard that which goes beyond the fist?

Shaykh: When did he take from it?

Questioner: Excuse me?

Shaykh: When did Ibn ‘Umar take from it?

Questioner: In that which is affirmed from Ibn ‘Umar, he took from…

Shaykh: When? When did he do it?

Questioner: In Hajj.

Shaykh: Tayyib. Those who use the action of Ibn ‘Umar as proof, unfortunately, do so beyond that. They say: Take from it during Hajj or other than it. The use of the evidence must be in accordance with the evidence (itself).

Questioner: So what about the other companions?

Shaykh: What other companions?

Questioner: Aboo Hurayrah.

Shaykh: This is affirmed from him?

Questioner: It has come within the Musannaf of Ibn Abee Shaybah.

Shaykh: How numerous are the weak narrations within the Musannaf of Ibn Abee Shaybah?! Let us agree with you, hypothetically, and say that it is authentically narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that he took from his beard on Hajj and other than it; also from Aboo Hurayrah, and so and so and such and such from the companions; we have the statement of their Imaam; the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), who said:

أعفوا اللحى
Let the beards flourish.

Did he say: You can take from the beard that which extends beyond the fist?

Questioner: No.

Shaykh: Tayyib. With what will you argue before your Lord on the Day of Standing? Allaah says:

And (remember) the Day (Allaah) will call to them, and say: “What answer gave you to the Messengers?” (Al-Qasas 28:65)

So what are you going to say? Are you going to say: O Allaah, I heard that Ibn ‘Umar or so and so from the companions did this? You can’t. You know? In the likes of these issues, if there has come a text, then do not ask (beyond that). Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “Stones are about to rain down upon you from the sky; I say to you: ‘Allaah’s Messenger said,’ and you say to me: ‘Aboo Bakr and ‘Umar said.’” Where is Ibn ‘Umar in comparison to ‘Umar? Where is Aboo Hurayrah in comparison to Aboo Bakr? In spite of this, Ibn ‘Abbaas repudiated the one who opposed the statement of the Allaah and the Messenger using the statement of these two Imaams; concerning whom the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

اقتدوا باللذين من بعدي أبو بكر وعمر
Follow the two who come after me; Aboo Bakr and ‘Umar.

And he said:

If they obey Aboo Bakr and ‘Umar then they will be rightly guided.

Do you understand? Take this principle with you: Do not oppose the statement of the Messenger with the statement or action of anyone. However, make an excuse for Ibn ‘Umar and Aboo Hurayrah in their opposing that which is apparent from the text. Make an excuse for them by way of this being Ijtihaad from them; therefore they are excused in it, just as ‘Uthmaan, may Allaah be pleased with him, is excused for completing the prayer while at Minaa. Take this as a principle with you. Any person who opposes the Qur’aan or the Sunnah, then make an excuse for him and do not seek to use his statement or action as evidence.

And all the praise is for Allaah, the Lord of all that exists; and may prayers and peace be upon Muhammad, his family and companions altogether.

The proof that it is worse than murder is that Allaah has made the punishment of the murderer to be at the discretion of the heir. If he (the heir) wills then he is executed and if he wills then he pardons him. Whereas He has predetermined the execution of he who does the action of the people of Lut.

The Imaam Al-‘Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him, has said:

“As for the male having intercourse with (another) male then this is a great act of lewdness and a despicable crime. It is a corrupter of the Dunyaa and the religion. It is a destroyer of manners and an annihilator of manhood. It is corruption of the society and a killer of morality. It is cause for the vanishing of goodness and blessings and it brings about evil and iniquities. It is an axe of destruction and demolition. It is a cause for humiliation, disgrace, and shame. Enlightened minds abhor it and sound Fitrahs reject it. The divine legislations censure it and consider it an abomination. This is because the action of the people of Lut is a great harm and a vile form of oppression. For it is oppression to the one who does it, due to that which he has dragged himself to from disgrace and shame; and he has driven himself to that which contains death and destruction. It is also oppression to the one whom it is done to, for he has lowered and humiliated himself; and he is pleased with lowliness and degeneration for himself, as well as the annihilation of his manhood. For he is amongst men having the status of women; and there is a darkness of humiliation upon his face which will not be removed until he dies. It is oppression to the entire society due to that which it leads to from the unleashing of calamities and iniquities. Allaah has already narrated to us that which occurred to the people of Lut from punishment. He said, after He had informed us of the story of their death and destruction:

وَمَا هِيَ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٍ
And they (the Punishments) are not ever far from the Zâlimûn (evil-doers).  (Hud 11:83)

When this despicable act spreads within the society and Allaah does not punish them by destroying their homes, then He unleashes upon them that which is worse than that. He unleashes upon them the inversion of the hearts, the twisting of their outlook, and the subjugation of their minds; such that they are silent about falsehood or their evil actions are beautified for them so that they deem them to be good.”

End of his (Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen’s) speech.

His ﷺ authentic and established statement:

“The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim. He does not oppress him; he does not abandon him; he does not look down upon him. It is a sufficient amount of evil for a person that he looks down upon his Muslim brother. All of the Muslim is Haraam for the Muslim; his blood, his wealth, and his honor.”

Call it (yourself) to account; for indeed calling oneself to account brings about salvation. The servant will continue to be in a state of good as long as he admonishes himself and he is concerned with calling himself to account. Say to it (yourself); say to it: O self, how many Muslims have you abused, and cursed, and backbitten, and falsely accused; slandered and lied on?

Say to it: O self, how many people’s wealth you have consumed; and their earnings; and their (hard earned) wages and property without right or justice?

Say to it: O self, how much cheating, trickery, and deceiving the people have you done? How many bribes have you taken? How many rights have you violated? How much mockery, ridicule, scorning, and harm have you meted out?

Say to it: O self, how many a worker, housekeeper, or weak person have you caused to fear or terrorized or beaten or harmed?

Say to it: O self, how many people has the evil reached from your heart; from malice and envy?

Say to it: O self, how many a brother have you wronged in dispute and argumentation?

Say to it: O self, how many have you angered; how many have you humiliated; how many have you saddened; how many have you made to suffer; and how many people have you caused pain?

Say to it: O self, how many Muslims have we caused to be estranged from his mother and father? Or we caused his son or daughter to be estranged from him? And we caused them to enter into disrespect and evil? How many a husband have we corrupted and caused to be estranged from his spouse or caused problems between them?

Say to it: O self, how many people have we harmed by way of music playing from our cars? Or how many an elder or worker or driver have we frightened or caused fear to by speeding in our cars?

Say to it: O self, the rights of the people are not something light nor are they insignificant nor are they unimportant with Allaah, the Majestic and High. Rather, He, Glorified be He, has made for them an appointment for retribution. It has been authentically narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he said:

“The rights will be returned to those whom they are due on the Day of Judgment; even to the point that the hornless sheep will receive retribution from the one with horns.”

Say to it: O self, have you seen a settling of the score as it relates to the rights or a reckoning as intricate as this? Perhaps it will repent. Perhaps its transgressions will desist. Perhaps its deceptions will cease. Perhaps its arrogance will be cut off. Perhaps it heart will yield and repent. Perhaps its eye will redden and flow with tears.

Taken from the lecture: The Quran the Book of Happiness

Shaykh Abdur Razzaaq:

Guidance and happiness are two affairs which go hand in hand; thus whoever is guided then he is happy. And whoever is misguided then he is miserable. Misery is the companion to misguidance which is not separated from it. Therefore whenever misguidance is found misery is found, and whenever guidance is found happiness is found.

SubhanaAllah!! This is an affair which the people perceive. Whoever is distant from Allah and His obedience and being upright upon His legislation and then he becomes guided, he will perceive in his heart a delight which was missing and a sweetness which was nonexistent and a joy which he was not aware of. When Allah honors him, and favors him with guidance he tastes the sweetness and experiences the joy of happiness, the coolness of the eyes, peace of mind, and tranquility of the soul; which he did not find before that.

I will narrate to you on this topic an amazing story. A few years ago a man called me after Asr prayer and he said; ‘I have a question; but before the question I want to inform you about my condition.’

He said: ‘I am twenty-seven years old and I cannot move any part of my body except for my head.’

I said: ‘How long have you been in this condition?’

He replied: ‘For two years.’

I said: ‘What caused that?’

He replied: A car accident.

I said to him: ‘Where are you living?’

He replied: ‘In such and such a place.’

I said: ‘I want to visit you.’ So I visited him the same day. He began to narrate to me his story, and it was a long story. I sat with him for an hour and a half; and most of the time I was listening and benefitting because his life contained a lesson. He said a statement to me which is the point of reference for the story and I will not be lengthy with the details.

He said to me: ‘By Allah, verily now I feel a delight which I walked for a long time on my feet in search of but did not find’. Before the accident I was negligent and after the accident I became one who turns to Allah, with remembrance, praying, and reciting the Quran.

One of the noble brothers brought for him a computer device that works by voice control; because his hands do not move. He tested it in front of me. He spoke to the computer and the Soorah he wanted opened. And he spoke to the computer and the verse he wanted opened. He spoke to the computer and the Tafseer he wanted opened. The Quran was in front of him, he read and memorized, and he read the Tafseer and he did not need to turn the pages with his hand or to call anyone to turn the pages for him. The verse he wanted he would request it directly, and if he wanted its Tafseer he would request it directly.

And he said: ‘By Allah, verily now I feel a delight which I walked for a long time on my feet in search of but did not find.’ Thus let the faithful person take a lesson and take a warning.

Guidance and happiness are only obtained by the Book of Allah the Glorified and Exalted. And whoever seeks it from other than the Book of Allah the Exalted will not attain anything except loss and he will not attain anything except destruction and ruin in his worldly life and his afterlife.

Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery (Soorah Taha 20:123)

And pay attention to His statement here: ‘then whoever follows My guidance’; because that which is necessary as it relates to the Quran is following it, not just the mere recitation and properly pronouncing its letters. The Quran was only sent down to be implemented not merely to pronounce its letters correctly while neglecting its guidelines. For this reason He said: ‘then whoever follows My guidance’. Thus that which results in happiness is following the guidance not merely memorizing the Quran or memorizing the letters of the Quran. And following the guidance of the Book of Allah is a branch of understanding the Quran and pondering over it.

(This is) a Book (the Quran) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember. (Soorah Sad 38:29)

Thus this is an affair which is necessary in order to attain happiness; reciting the Quran, reflecting over its verses, working by it, and following its guidance.

All praises are due to Allāh, and may the Peace and Prayers be upon His Messenger (peace be upon him), his family, all of his Companions and whoever follows them in righteousness until the Day of Resurrection.

Allāh (Jalla Jalaaluhu) says in His Noble Book:

“O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allāh and His Messenger, but fear Allāh . Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.” [al-Ḥujurāt 49:1]

Concerning this verse, al-ʿAwfī stated: “He forbade them from speaking during His speech.” (Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr)

It is also known that whenever Imām Mālik ibn Anas, the Imām of Dār al-Hijrah (rahimahullaaH), would begin his lessons of Ḥadīth, if anyone was talking, he would censure and rebuke them by reciting the statement of Allāh (Jalla Jalaaluhu):

“O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet.” [al-Ḥujurāt 49:2]

Some scholars have stated that the person who talks over the narration of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Ḥadīth, it is as if they are talking directly over him.

The sittings of knowledge—most specifically those which take place in the masājid—should be held in reverence and honor of the texts and narrations being recited. Are we not aware of the conduct of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in such circumstances? In the authentic narration collected by Imām Aḥmad in his Musnad on the authority of al-Barā ibn ʿᾹzib (radhiAllaahu anhu), who said: “…He (i.e. the Prophet) sat, and [the companions] sat around him; it was as if there were birds on their heads.” The saying “as if there were birds on their heads” is a way of describing how quiet and still they were, quiet and still as statues. The noble scholar Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn (rahimahullaah) stated: “[This was] out of respect for the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) and in honor of the venerableness of this sitting.” (Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-Ṣaliḥīn)

We mention this as a reminder for our beloved sisters that the lessons, exhortations and reminders in the masājid are filled with the verses of Allah’s Book and the narrations of His Messenger (peace be upon him); these gatherings must be honored and respected in the same fashion we see from the noble Companions.

At the same time, it must also be stated that not only is loud talk and chatter contrary to the aforementioned verses and narrations; it is also a harm and distraction for those sisters who have come to the gatherings of Dhikr (remembrance) to benefit and take provisions for their hereafter.

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) was asked about a masjid where the people were reciting Qur’ān, but at the doors of the masjid were people talking excessively, disturbing those who were reciting. He answered:

It is not permissible for anyone to harm the people of the masjid: the people of prayer, recitation, remembrance, supplication, etc., [acts] for which the masājid were built. Thus, it is unbefitting for anyone inside the masjid, at the doors of the masjid or anywhere near it to disturb these individuals. Rather, one time the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) came out to his companions while they were praying and raising their voices in recitation [of the Qur’ān] and said: “O people, all of you are praying confidentially to your Lord, so do not raise your voices over one another in recitation.” So if he forbade the person who was praying from raising his voice [in recitation] over another worshipper, how much more for other than this? Therefore, whoever does that which disturbs the people of the masjid or what causes it, they are to be prevented from this, and Allāh knows best. (Majmu’ al-Fatāwa 22/205)

We ask Allāh (Jalla Jalaaluhu) to make us and our noble, beloved sisters from those who honor the masājid, the people of the masājid and the gatherings of remembrance. Indeed Allāh (Jalla Jalaaluhu) has power over all things.

Shaykh Sulayman Ar Ruhaylee:

Shaykh of Islam Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah have mercy upon him said: As Hudaifah said to Umar

The afflictions for a man as it relates to his wife, his wealth, his children and his neighbor (and in another narration: himself, his children and his neighbor) are expiated by his prayers, fasting, charity and by enjoining good and forbidding is evil.’ Agreed upon.

The Fitna for a man in his wife, his wealth and his children; what is the Fitna for a man in his wife, his wealth and his children? The scholars say: It is the distraction they cause him, or for the man to commit some impermissible acts outside of the major sins, because of them.

The scholars say: The man may be tried from within his child (فِيْ ولده) and he may be tried by his child (بولده) and he may be tried from his child (من ولده).

He could be tried by his children thus they distract him, and perhaps he could leave off some of his obligations because of his children, or he may commit some impermissible acts because of his children.

How many people have never taken a picture before at all, and his picture has never been taken at all. Until he is granted a child, then he begins to carry a picture of his child in his cell phone!

There are those from the people of good who have lived since they have known the truth, refusing to be photographed himself, and he does not have a picture except that which is absolutely necessary. But when he is granted a child he is the one who takes a picture of his child! He has been tried by his child.

And he could be tried from within his child such that his child for example; is upon a path which is not good, or manners which are not good; and with Allah refuge is sought.

And he could be tried from his child, such that the child calls the parent to evil. How many men were upon guidance and the Sunnah and the blessed good Salafiyyah by which the life is adorned and uprightness is actualized; then he was granted a child, and his child kept at him until he caused him to deviate away from it!

Excerpts:

Yasir Qadhiself-proclaimed scholar and Dean of Academic Affairs at Almaghrib Institute, has recently become even more active in requesting the general Muslims to keep away from the scholars of Islaam, and to rely completely on Westernized and apologetic preachers like himself and those connected to his Almaghrib Institute, those currently being set up as replacements for the actual scholars of Islaam.

In a recent speech about “modernity” in December of 2013, Yasir Qadhi tells stories of the “stupidity” of the scholars of Islaam throughout history, and how their rigidity and lack of connection to the people has always kept Islaam and the Muslims from progress.

After laying down the foundations for the scholars to be viewed as a bunch of clowns to be laughed at, he introduces a shining brand of “scholars” who are forward-thinking and actively connected to the people. Who are they? They are the deviant political activists of the Muslim lands, those the scholars of Islaam have warned against time and time again, the likes of Hassan al-Bannaa, founder of the al-Ikhwaan al-Muslimoon Sect, and Saudi activist Salman al-’Owdah, whom Yasir praises highly as a “forward-thinking realistic scholar”.

Question: Noble Shaykh, is it permissible to spank the child who is under ten years old for the prayer, and is he to be spanked for other than the prayer, such as for discipline? And at what age can he be spanked?

Answer: As for spanking him for the prayer, then it is not permissible before the age of ten; for the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) demarcated it. As for spanking him for discipline then there is no harm in that, even if before the age of ten if he will be benefitted by that and disciplined. What’s the third question?

Questioner: So at what age can he be spanked?

Shaykh: Ten. For the prayer, (it is) ten. For other than the prayer then at the age in which he will benefit from being disciplined he can be spanked. The spanking, in all circumstances, is restricted such that it does not cause injury.

The following is a summary translation

Questioner:

The statement of the Messenger

And separate them in the bed.

O Shaykh is this hadith general?

Shaykh Uthaymeen: What do you mean by general?

Questioner: Meaning it includes everyone, such as brothers in faith who are not related, and other than them?

Shaykh Uthaymeen: Yes, meaning between the sons and the daughters, and between the daughters and the daughters, and between the sons and the sons. They are separated in the beds; because evil is feared once they reached ten years of age; evil is feared.

Questioner: Is it permissible for adults over twenty to lie under the same cover and in one bed?

Shaykh Uthaymeen: Adults over twenty years old are not to sleep in one bed together. The danger upon them is severe; because the sleeping person may not sense anything.

The following is some advice from our brother Abul-’Abbaas Moosaa Richardson(حفظه الله تعالى)  to all those people who wish to bring about change within Muslim authorities by organizing public petitions.

The original advice that was sent out has been slightly modified at the request of Moosaa after I sought permission from our brother to post it out on the Salafi mailing lists:

… Public petitions are not naseehah, nor are they from the way the Salaf would seek change in a society.

It is something from the non-Muslim Westerners, part of their democratic system of politics, adopted and promoted by the Ikhwan Sect and others.

People concerned with following the way of the Salaf must shun such behavior. Islam has its prescribed way of advising the Muslim authorities in private, direct advice that benefits and brings change, yet it does not lead to fitnah in the society.  Why replace this with the methodologies of non-Muslims?

And Allaah knows best.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Haadee:

What is prescribed to say if you see a shooting star falling? I am asking you all. When we see a shooting star most of the time they are chasing the devils.

And verily, we used to sit there in stations, to (steal) a hearing, but any who listens now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush. (Soorah Al Jinn 72:9)

Lying in wait, it follows him, and if it catches up to him it burns him up. And if it does not catch up to him, he takes this one statement to the sorcerer and he adds lies to it.

Except one who snatches away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness. (Soorah As-Saffat 37:10)

And indeed We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps (Soorah Al Mulk 67:5)

The person who sees a shooting star; what is it prescribed for him to say?

It comes in the narration of ibn Abbass رضي ألله عنهما that he used to say:

اللَهُمَ صَوِّبهُ و أصِبْ بِهِ و أكْفِنا شَرَهُ

O Allah aim it at him, and hit him, and suffice us from his evil.

Aim it at him, and hit him, and suffice us from his evil.

‘O Allah aim it at him’; meaning aim it at this thief. ‘And hit him’; meaning hit him with it. And suffice the Muslims from his evil.

O Allah aim it at him, and hit him, and suffice us from his evil.

Thus, this is what is prescribed when you see a shooting star falling. And this is found in the books of the actions of the day and the night; in the Sunnan; the remembrance which the Muslim should say during the day and the night; and from them is what to say when you see a shooting star.

Question:

Who is the Scholar worthy of consideration in the science of al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel (criticism and praise) in this time?

Shaykh ‘Ubayd al-Jaabiree:

Al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel; even some of the virtuous scholars are not qualified for it.

  1. It is a must to, firstly, have knowledge for it.
  2. Secondly, one must have awe (of Allaah) and Taqwaa (piety).
  3. Thirdly, one must be experienced and well acquainted with men, their statements and their conditions.

So whoever possesses these three affairs, will excel in the science of al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel. And since time, those who stand out in the science al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel are small in number. This is because al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel is religion!

So whoever criticizes a person about something Allaah knows he is free from – he criticizes him purely based upon desires – then this one has exposed himself to a dispute on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever praises a person who doesn’t deserve to be praised, then this is a danger upon him and the people. So it is obligatory to possess these three affairs for al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel:

  1. Awe (of Allaah) and Taqwaa
  2. knowledge
  3. Experience and acquaintance with the conditions of the people and their statements

And Shaykh Rabee’ – may Allaah preserve him – has been praised by al-Albaanee in this (field). And this doesn’t mean that there aren’t other Scholars, from amongst his brothers, that are qualified for this (science).

But I call attention to an issue, which is in fact a qaa’idah (principle), and that is:

من علِمَ حُجّة على من لم يعلَم
Whoever has knowledge (about something) is a proof against the one who doesn’t have knowledge.

So whoever generally praises a person, and then another person criticizes him with clear proofs from his books, his tapes or his statements, then that which is taken is the statement of the critic. And that one (who praised him), perhaps he is excused; maybe he praised him because he thought well of him or he was praised by someone he trusts with regards to his religion and his amaanah (trust). And the critic increased us in knowledge that was hidden for that one (who praised him), by proving that this person is Majrooh (criticized). And since a long time ago the people used to differ (about the condition of a person).

Ash-Shaafi’ee – may Allaah have mercy upon him – used to say about Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Abi Yahyaa: “The trustworthy one narrated to me…” “The one I don’t accuse narrated to me…” And he considered him trustworthy. But the (other) scholars criticized him, Imaam Maalik and other than him criticized him. And he (Ibrahim ibn Muhammad) was Majrooh. And the reason for which he was criticized was not known to Imaam ash-Shaafi’ee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, despite his great status and his Imaamah (him being an Imaam).

Another example is ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Saalih al-Azdee al-‘Atakee. Imaam Ahmad praised him while Abu Dawood criticized him. He (Abu Dawood) said: “Verily, he has written a book speaking ill of Ahlul-Bayt (the family of the Prophet).” Or as he said. So the Muhaqqiqoon (the verifiers) accepted the Jarh of Abu Dawood. And praising this man didn’t harm Imaam Ahmad – may Allaah have mercy upon him – because he praised him according to his knowledge (about him).

This is a principle I mentioned because not understanding it confuses the students of knowledge.

You find for example Scholars who criticize Sayyid Qutb. And there are Scholars who praise him and say that he is an Imaam of guidance, etc. So what do you do? Look, in front of you is someone who praises and someone who criticizes. In front of you is a statement saying that this man is not an Imaam of guidance, that he is astray and leads others astray, that the least thing which can be said about him is that he is jaahil (ignorant) and that his books are filled with kufr (disbelief) and takfeer (declaring others disbelievers). They are filled with statements of kufr, takfeer and denial of the Attributes (of Allaah). And someone else says (about Qutb): “He is an Imaam of guidance and a person of knowledge, but he has some errors.” So what do you do? Use this principle: which one has the proof? The critic. Because the one who criticized Sayyid Qutb in his book of tafseer (fi dhilaal al-quraan) and other than that, criticized him based upon proofs which, if one looks at it, he will know that this man has no knowledge, (and this is) the least thing which can be said (about him)! The least thing which can be said is that this man has no knowledge, that he is ignorant and that the laymen of the Muslims are better than him! As for that one (who praised him), then Allaah knows best about his condition. Have you understood this or not?

Shaykh Rabee’ – may Allaah preserve him – has written about Sayyid Qutb four or five books wherein he clarified the Jarh of this man with proofs. And before him Shaykh ‘Abdullaah ad-Duwaysh – may Allaah have mercy upon him –, he was from the Scholars of al-Qaseem, he counted 181 errors from this man (Qutb) in his book of tafseer alone! So how can it be said that he only has small errors, etc? This doesn’t concern us. We are upon his Jarh! Because the one who criticized him has done so based upon proofs from his books. And like this… This is one example.

Another example: someone says that Hasan al-Banna is an Imaam! Meaning: an Imaam from the Mujtahideen, he only has some small errors and minor ta’weel (figurative interpretation, distortion). And someone else comes and explains to you the errors of Hasan al-Banna and his books. And he establishes for you with proofs that he is a Mufawwid, that he is a Soofee Qubooree (grave-worshipping Sufi) and that he is the inventor of the wicked principle, the principle of excusing and co-operating with one another: “We co-operate in what we agree upon and excuse each other in what we disagree upon.” And he (Hasan al-Banna) applied this principle. The day he formed the council of al-Ikhwaan al-Muslimeen, he appointed three christians as councilors. Maa shaa-al-Laah! And he established the House of Reconciling between the Sunnah and the Shee’ah in Egypt. And he invited major Raafidah like Nawaaf Safawi and others. Have you understood this? This is based upon proofs. And that one who praised him, we don’t concern ourselves (with him) because we have the proofs. We are the Ummah of proofs! We are the Ummah of proofs, na’am.

drugs and intoxicants

Indeed all the praise is for Allaah. We praise him, we seek his aid, we seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our souls and the consequences of our evil actions. He whom Allaah guides there is none to misguide and he whom Allaah leads astray there in none to guide him aright. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah; who is one without partners; and I bear witness that our Prophet Muhammad is Allaah’s servant and Messenger.

O Allaah, send prayers, peace, and blessings upon Your slave and Messenger Muhammad; upon his family, and companions, altogether. As to proceed:

Have Taqwaa of Allaah, as Taqwaa should be had of Him. How great is the reward of those who have Taqwaa. How delightful is the state and the abode of those who are obedient. O people, indeed the punishment for crimes and sins within the Dunyaa and the Hereafter is due to the despicable nature of the crime and its evil effect upon the one who commits it and upon the society. Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said:

الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِ اللّهِ زِدْنَاهُمْ عَذَابًا فَوْقَ الْعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُواْ يُفْسِدُونَ

Those who disbelieved and hinder (men) from the Path of Allaah, for them We will add torment over the torment; because they used to spread corruption. (An-Nahl 16:88)

Allaah, the Glorified, has said:

وَلاَ تُفْسِدُواْ فِي الأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلاَحِهَا ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

And do not mischief on the earth after it has been set in order. That will be better for you, if you are believers.  (Al-A’raf 7:85)

And indeed from the great crimes and the major destructive (sins) and the sins which are destructive to the individual and the society are (the use of) drugs and intoxicants. They do not enter into a society except that they destroy it. No one becomes addicted to them except that he becomes corrupted with various types of evils. They do not spread within a society except that it is engulfed with every evil and it falls into various types of calamities and major sins occur therein and corruptions occur therein which the intellectuals and righteous are unable to remedy.

‘Uthmaan, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “Avoid Khamr for it is the mother of (all) evils.”[1]

Drugs, O brothers, is the greatest form of Khamr. Therefore, they have been prohibited with the most intense for of prohibition. The types of drugs and their corruptions are many. From them are those which the people know able and from them are those which are not known at all. Drugs, in all of its types, have been prohibited by Allaah and his Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam); whether they be plants, pills, eaten, or drank, or snorted, or injected.

Similarly, drugs, in all of its types, the Legislation is severe in its condemnation and threat against it due to what it contains from harm and destruction. And due to that which they contain from evil and due to that which they cause for the addict, from transforming him to an evil person from whom corruption and crime are expected and no good is hoped for from him.

The intellectuals of the world have called for the saving of the societies from the scourge of drugs due to that which they have witnessed from iniquities.

The harms of drugs upon the one addicted to them and upon the society are many and nearly none are safe except a small portion. From their harms upon the addict is the loss of his intellect; and the intellect is the distinguishing characteristic between the human and the animals. He whose intellect goes then he embarks upon crimes and virtue to taken from him.

From its harms is that the natural disposition of the person changed and he becomes a Shaytaan and he is stripped of the characteristics of the righteous.

From its harms is foolishness in manner of dealings. So he does that which is harmful to him and abandons that which benefits him. Shaytaan has driven him to every despicable act and has removed him from every virtue.

From the harms of drugs is corruption in the thought process. So he loses sound judgment and upright opinions. He does not see the end results of the affairs and he does not look except to the exact moment that he is currently in, even if it contains his destruction, harm, and detriment.

From its harms is the loss of trustworthiness and negligence regarding it in that which is obligatory to safeguard and preserve. He cannot be trusted over any general thing; nor can he be trusted over wealth or job. He can’t even be trusted over his relatives and family members. This is because the drugs have corrupted his nature, and the refuge is with Allaah.

From its harms is that the addict is a burden upon the society. He does not bring any good to his society nor is he successful in that which he brings forth.

From its harms is that the addict is despised and hated, even by the closest of people to him.

From its harms is the squandering of wealth and the inability to make noble earnings. So he resorts to earning wealth by way of criminal means. I seek Allaah’s refuge for me and for you.

From its harms is deterioration of one’s health and the contraction of incurable diseases, leading the person to death.

From is harms is the loss of dignity and inclining towards the wicked, from men or women.

From its harms is the shortening of life due to what it causes from destruction of the bodily organs and due to what is exposes the person to from grief and stress.

From its harm is the Shayateen gaining mastery over the addict and the angels of mercy being far away from him, until he is driven to the Hellfire, and the refuge is with Allaah. Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic said:

And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allaah) (i.e. this Qur’aan and worship of Allaah), We appoint for him Shaytaan (Satan devil) to be a Qarîn (an intimate companion) to him. And verily, they (devils) hinder them from the Path (of Allaah), but they think that they are guided aright! Till, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says [to his Qarîn (Satan / devil companion)] “Would that between me and you were the distance of the two easts (or the east and west)” a worst (type of) companion (indeed)! It will profit you not this Day (O you who turn away from Allaah’s remembrance and His worship, etc.) as you did wrong, (and) that you will be sharers (you and your Qarîn) in the punishment. (Az-Zukhruf 43:36-39)

From its harms is the curse being upon the addict until he repents. This is due to his (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) statement:

لعن الله الخمر وشاربها وساقيها ومبتاعها وبائعها وعاصرها ومعتصرها وحاملها والمحمولة إليه

“Allaah has cursed Al-Khamr; the one who drinks it and the one who pours it; its buyer and its seller; its squeezer and the one for whom it is squeezed; the one who carries it and the one to whom it is carried.”[2]

And he (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

ثلاثة لا يدخلون الجنة مدمن الخمر وعابد الوثن والديوث

“Three will not enter into Paradise: The one who is addicted to intoxicants; the worshipper of the idol; and the cuckold.”[3]

Drugs, O brothers, is greater than Khamr (alcohol). Therefore, the prohibition of Khamr is a prohibition of drugs as well; and the threat regarding alcohol is likewise a threat regarding drugs.

From its harms, O brothers in faith, is the spread of various types of crime within the society and the spread of lewdness and evils; and the loss of the family structure, and the deviation of the younger generation; for they will live without a family or cultivator for them to find repose with.

From the harms of drugs upon the society is the descending of punishments and tribulations. Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, said:

وَاتَّقُواْ فِتْنَةً لاَّ تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مِنكُمْ خَآصَّةً وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ

And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that Allaah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Anfal 8:25)

From its harms is obedience will come to be a burden; it will be disliked, and hated. Likewise, dislike and hatred for the righteous, and avoiding their gatherings and staying away from the gatherings of remembrance and the places of worship; and love for crime and inclination towards disobedience; and love for the evil people; taking them and friends and companions.

Brothers in Islaam, drugs; the devils of mankind grow them, manufacture, and distribute them in order to actualize to objectives which they have:

The First Objective: To corrupt the society to the point that the one who is addicted to drugs does not think except in ways which are blameworthy (even) by the animals. When it spreads within the society and it is not combatted, then (others) will be harmed by it and by way of it be destroyed.

The Second Objective: To earn Haraam monies; and what an evil earning this is. Money that is acquired by way of drugs and intoxicants contains no good nor is there any blessing in it. Rather, it corrupts the heart and ruins the homes and disperses the families and destroys them. It brings about disgrace, shame, and the cutting off of the lineage.

O Muslims, beware of the traps of Shaytaan with which he traps his followers in order that they will be with him in the Hellfire.

O people, have Taqwaa of Allaah, the Exalted within, yourselves and as it relates to your families and your children. And know that the callers to westernism, from outside of our lands and within them, want to make the woman depart from the legislation of Al-Islaam and dress her with the western manner of dress; and remove from her every (trace of) modesty and decency; and that she should become like the Kaafir woman. They want this. Due to this, they speak about the Hijaab; they speak about free-mixing; they speak about the woman traveling which the legislator has restricted and demarcated. They want to divorce the woman from every legislative ruling which preserves her, protects her, and safeguards her; and that she should be like the western woman; like the Kaafir woman. No manners and no religion; no modesty and no chastity; like an animal! There is no might nor power except with Allaah.  Where is your protection of your women?! Did not Allaah, the Majestic and High, say to you:

الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاء

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women. (An-Nisa 4:34)

Where is your protection of the women?! Why do you leave her for the ravenous hungry wolves?!  Are you in agreement with them? Do you feel safe for them? Will you not have Taqwaa of Allaah, O Muslims? You are in a time of Fitan; in a time of evil. That which is not done in the parties and gatherings is apparent on the screens and satellite channels. The women look at it and adopt it; within your homes. These things are displayed within your homes! Will you not have Taqwaa of Allaah, the Blessed and High?! Will you not safeguard your women and your children and fulfill the trust which Allaah has placed upon you and will ask you about on the Day of Standing?!

What are you doing, Akhee? O our brother…I do not know, what do you benefit from At-Tasweer (picture taking) and taking it (the picture) with you. Na’am; Allaah is Beseeched for Help. (People) are put to trial with this Tasweer. The Fitnah of it increased when the means for it became easily accessible and it came to be within these cellular phones. Before, a person with be somewhat ashamed to carry a camera to the Masaajid. Now, it came to be within these phones so they dared to venture into this prohibited Tasweer which the Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who does it. So the people are in need of being reminded and clarification that At-Tasweer in from the MAJOR SINS; because the Prophet ﷺ cursed the picture maker, as is within the Saheeh. What could one want, beyond this explicit text? I wish I knew, what does the one who errs (in this regard) say about this authentic and explicit Hadeeth? There has preceded with us the speech of the scholars and we have mentioned it numerous times; that the authentic and explicit texts which do not have an abrogating (text) nor is there anything to contradict them, obligate that one be stern in repudiation of the one who opposes them. Not just repudiation; but sternness in doing so. This is because these texts are explicit, and do not leave room for interpretation. So as it relates to Tasweer, O assembly of brothers, if you see something from it—may Allaah reward you with good—then alert (the people) for many of them are ignorant; they are not aware of the texts and they don’t know them. Alert them and clarify to them the severe threat. And the reason for laxity regarding it now is these means which have become easy within the hands of the elders as well as the youth; even the children. So it has become easy to take pictures by way of them. We ask Allaah for safety and security.

Question:

What is the ruling of supplication within the prayer in a language other than Arabic; specifically for a man who is not good in the Arabic language?

Answer:

Supplicating in other than the Arabic language for a person who does not know Arabic is permissible, whether it be in the prayer or outside of the prayer. This is because this person who does not know Arabic, if he was made to supplicate in Arabic then this would be burdening him with that which is not within his scope. Allaah has said:

Allaah burdens not a person beyond his scope. (Al-Baqarah 2:286)

If someone were to say: We will teach him; then we say: If you teach him the phrases but he does not know the meanings then what is the benefit? At any rate, it is permissible for a person to supplicate in his tongue (i.e., language); meaning, in the tongue of the one supplicating; in the Arabic language or other than the Arabic language. As for the Qur’aan, it is not permissible for anyone to utter it in other than the Arabic language, whatever the case may be (i.e., he understands or not). As for the statements of remembrance which have been narrated (i.e., in the Qur’aan or the Sunnah), then if one has an excuse for not learning them in the Arabic language then there is no harm in a person reciting them in his tongue. However, as you know the Name Allaah,[1] for example, it is not possible to change it to other than the Arabic language. If it is not possible then he can supplicate in other than the Arabic language.

So the categories (of statements within the prayer) are how many? Three:

The First: That which is not permissible except in the Arabic language. This is the Qur’aan

The Second: That which is permissible in Arabic as well as other than it for the one who does not understand Arabic, and it is to supplicate to Allaah with that which has not come (in the Qur’aan or the Sunnah).

The Third: Supplicating with that which has been narrated, such as the statements of remembrance or other than it. We say: If the person has the ability to say them in Arabic then they are to be in Arabic. If he is unable then (he may say them) in his language.

My brother, the problem with the youth today, as they say in Ash-Shaam: The sticks gather them and the sticks separate them (i.e., they gather and disperse around people very easily). They are not accustomed to knowing knowledge and the people of knowledge. So everyone who speaks and is eloquent and begins to blabber then he is given ear and listened to. This is an error. This is where the confusion, distress, etc. comes from. Due to this, we advise the youth, my brother, to not—whenever a newcomer comes and a caller cries out—do not listen to him and give ear to him. Due to this, I like at times the sternness of some of the Salaf. In what? In their prohibiting of sitting with the people of Bid’ah; to the point that they even feared for themselves. This is from the amazing affairs. They even feared for themselves that a doubt from this person who debates upon falsehood would cling to the heart of whom? The heart of the scholar. So what do you think as it relates to the common-folk? Due to this, for these it is not permissible, O brother, to give them ear. It is only to be said to them: “There are scholars and students of knowledge. Perhaps you can be guided by them and be sufficed with them. We do not know this speech.” Suffice yourself with this. He who desires to hear, every day, (different) speech regarding the religion; a different opinion every day, then this is evidence for the lack of stability for the correct Eemaan within the hearts of the people.

Shaykh Salih Aali Shaykh:

Imaam Malik—was reading in the Masjid, narrating the hadith of the Prophet عَلَيْهِ الصَّلاَةُ والسَّلاَمُ—and with him was Yahya ibn Yahya Al Layth the narrator of his Muwatta—he and the other students were around Imaam Malik.

A caller screamed out: Great elephants have come to Al Medina!

The people of Al Medina had not seen elephants because elephants do not live in this country. All of the students rushed to see the elephants and they left Malik; except for Yahya ibn Yahya Al Layth; only.

Malik said to him: Why? Have you seen elephants before?

He said: I travelled to see Malik not to see elephants.

And for this reason Allah the Exalted rewarded him such that the narration which is now spread throughout the East of the earth and the West of it, and relied upon for the Muwatta of Imaam Malik, it is the narration of Yahya ibn Yahya Al Layth; despite him being from his minor students. There are narrations from people greater than him, but it was not written that they be granted acceptance.

The Christians’ celebrating the ‘Eid of the birth of ‘Eesaa, upon him be peace, is for them. However, it is not permissible for the Muslim to participate in their holidays. They are not to give them gifts at the time of their holidays nor is it befitting to accept their gifts from them at the time of their holidays. Nor is it permissible to sell them anything which will aid them in the celebration of their holidays; all of this is incorrect. This is because it entails being pleased with that which they are upon if the person were to do so. And being pleased with Kufr and the holidays of the disbelievers is prohibited for the Muslims.

Shaykh ibn Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) :

Then what is worse than that; is some Muslims celebrate the New Year, and they glorify it and venerate it, and it is connected to the religious occasion of the Christians; which is; what? The birthday of the Messiah Eesa ibn Maryam peace be upon him. Thus celebrating New Year’s Eve, yes, in relation with the birth of the Messiah; this is rejoicing with their religious rites and practices. And rejoicing with kufr practices—if the person who is pleased with this is safe from disbelief—then it is as ibn Al Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him said in his book, ‘the ruling on the dhimmi’ it is more severe than being pleased with drinking alcohol and worshiping the cross.

Thus the affair is very dangerous O brothers. It is not permissible for the person to celebrate Christmas; if he is a Muslim. And it is not permissible for him to congratulate them for this holiday; if he is a Muslim. And it is not permissible for him to respond to this greeting if they congratulate him for this holiday; if he is a Muslim.

Subhan’Allah! Shall we congratulate them for a holiday which is considered as a religious practice? And is this anything other than being pleased with disbelief? But most of those who congratulate them do not intend to exalt their religion or practices, but rather they only intend what; to be courteous. And this is incorrect.

If someone says; I am courteous to them because they are courteous to me and they congratulate me for Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. We say: Alhamdulillah. If they congratulate you with Eid Al-Adha and Eid Al-Fitr, then they have congratulated you for legislated holiday, which Allah has made for His slaves. And it is mandatory for Eid Al-Adha and Eid Al-Fitr to be their holidays, because it is obligatory upon them to accept Islam. But if you congratulate them for Christmas then you are congratulating them for a holiday which Allah has not designated as a holiday.

Thus Christmas has no basis in history and it has no basis in the religious legislation. Eesa ibn Maryam did not command them to establish this holiday. Thus it is either that, which was entered into the religion of the Messiah as innovation and misguidance, or it was prescribed in the legislation of Eesa ibn Maryam but it has been abrogated by the legislation of Islam. Therefore it has no basis by any estimation. Because if we said it is from the innovation of the Christians and it is not from their legislation; then it is misguidance. And if we said it is from their legislation, then it has been abrogated; and to worship Allah with an abrogated religion is misguidance; thus it is misguidance by any estimation. And because it is misguidance, how is it befitting for me—while I am a Muslim—to congratulate them for it?!

And we have answered the issue of them congratulating us for our Eid and us not congratulating them for their holiday because our Eid has been legislated by Allah the Exalted; while their holiday is not legislated. This is because it has either been fabricated in their legislation or abrogated by our legislation.  Thus it has no basis in any regard.

Question:

Some people think that it is not upon them to show respect to the Imaam of the Masjid because he is not the supreme leader (i.e., the ruler etc.). This is to the point that you see him, when there occurs a dispute between him and the Imaam regarding a personal issue he raises his voice at him in front of the people and addresses him with a lack of respect. This same person, perhaps you can see him in a restaurant like McDonald’s, for example, addressing the disbelievers with the utmost respect. And the Imaam is Salafee; a person of the Sunnah. The question: What is the extent of the rights of the Imaam; i.e., the Imaam of the Masjid; and is it upon us to show him respect?

Answer: Record now. Record this question. Can I begin?

Questioner: Yes, O Shaykh. May Allaah bless you.

Shaykh: All the praise is for Allaah, the Lord of all that exists. May prayers, peace, and blessing be upon our Prophet Muhammad, upon his family, and companions, all together.  As to what follows:

It is not befitting, as it relates to him, for him to meet his Muslim brother who traverses upon the Book of Allaah, the Majestic and High, and the Sunnah of His Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), and upon the Manhaj of the pious predecessors except to meet him with good manners and lofty etiquettes and humbleness, mildness, and kindness. If he is from those who have a religious station; like if he is from the scholars, or the students of knowledge, or the Imaams of the Masaajid who deliver the sermons to the people, admonishes them, instructs them, and teaches them the rulings of the religion then displaying good etiquettes with them and…(words unclear), and displaying good manners, and kindness, and mildness, without doubt takes more precedence than with other than him. He who meets his Muslim brothers with a frowning face and rough speech and a raised voice while he meets the enemies of Allaah, the Majestic and High; the enemies of His religion and Legislation with good manners, a pleasant face and delightful demeanor, and kindness, the believer has more right to these characteristics; although it is befitting that he display them to all the people in order that the people can see the effects of Al-Islaam upon him; and that it has refined his manners and has beautified his etiquettes and has adorned him with pleasant characteristics.

The matter is increased in ugliness if this roughness and harshness and hardness towards your Muslim brother and raising of the voice is displayed within the Masjid. For the Masaajid are only built for prayer and the remembrance of Allaah and the recitation of the Qur’aan. The raising of voices therein, and arguing and disputing are more severe in ugliness than singing would be in other places.

So the Muslims must be given their rights. If one is within the Masjid; the point is that the Masjid has a right. It is befitting that one pays attention to these matters and that he gives everyone who has a right his right.

Translator’s foreword:

About Shaykh Umar: Shaykh Abdul Mushin Al Abbad Al Badr said: As for his name, then he is my comrade, my friend, my beloved, the Shaykh Umar Muhammad Bakar Al Fulani known as Fullatah…and Al Fulani is an ascription to a tribe in Africa.

He was born in 1345H (1925) and he passed in 1419H (1999)

Shaykh Umar Fullatah may Allah have mercy upon him said:

I say: Eesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam; Allah created him from a mother and he does not have a father. Similarly Allah created Adam without a father or a mother. And likewise Allah created Hawwa (Eve) with a father and no mother. Thus the affair is not strange. Allah said in His glorious Book:

إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَى عِنْدَ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ خَلَقَهُ مِنْ تُرَابٍ

Verily, the likeness of Eesa (Jesus) with Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from soil. (Soorah Aali Imraan 3:59)

Our father Adam—peace be upon him—Allah created him from soil, from sounding clay like the clay of pottery, from an adhesive soil. After that Allah ordered that a soul be blown into him with the statement, ‘Be’. Thus Adam was.

Where is the mother of Adam? Where is the father of Adam? The father of mankind—Adam—does not have a father or a mother. Thus the All-Knowing, the Most Great, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise, the One who does whatever He wants and chooses, created Adam without a mother or a father. And the affair is not like Darwin (upon him is the curse of Allah) says; the theory of Darwin which states the origin of mankind is from monkeys, and they evolved. The theory of evolution, says that monkeys evolved through stages until it became Adam. And that Adam is not from soil but rather he is an animal who evolved.

And Allah the Exalted said:

إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَى عِنْدَ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ خَلَقَهُ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ

Verily, the likeness of Eesa (Jesus) with Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from soil, the He said to him ‘Be’ and he was. (Soorah Aali Imraan 3:59)

As for Hawwa (Eve); Allah created her from a rib from Adam. She does not have a mother while she has a father. Thus Allah the Exalted wanted to create Eesa (Jesus) so He created him from a mother, and she is the virgin Maryam, the untouched; may the best prayers and peace be upon her and upon our Prophet.

She is Maryam the daughter of Imraan, the one whom Allah described with His statement:

الَّتِي أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا

The one who guarded her chastity (Soorh At Tahrim 66:12)

In this is a testimony from the Creator, the Exalted, that she surely guarded her chastity and she was not a lewd woman, peace be upon her.

Her father was a righteous man, a worshipper. Her mother became pregnant with her, meaning with Maryam, so she dedicated her to the service of Allah. (Her intent was) if Allah blessed her with a son, she would dedicate this son to the Masjid, worship and the obedience of Allah. But Allah decreed the mother of Maryam was to give birth to Maryam; a girl and not a boy who would take care of the affairs of the Masjid and worship Allah in the Masjid.

Thus when she gave birth to a girl she wanted an excuse with Allah, she said:

Then when she delivered her [child Maryam], she said: “O my Lord! I have delivered a female child,” – and Allah knew better what she delivered, – “And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and for her offspring from Satan, the outcast.” (Soorah Aali Imraan 3:36)

Allah the Exalted said:

So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zakariya. Every time Zakariya entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, “O Maryam, from where is this [coming] to you?” She said, “It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.” (Soorah Aali Imraan 3:37)

Maryam—while she was still young—was honored by Allah. The provision that Zakariya found with Maryam—and Zakariya was from her closest guardians—he would come and find the fruits which only grow during the summer months with her during the winter months; and he would find with her the fruits which only grow during the winter months with her during the summer months. She was blessed, righteous, pious, throughout her youth and when she reached womanhood.

Yusuf the carpenter asked for her hand in marriage, and he was from her relatives. He desired to marry her. And she was righteous; dedicated to her prayer area, dedicated to obedience to Allah and worship. The entire community of that time period testified to her righteousness and piety. And for this reason when she became pregnant (they said to her)

O sister of Harun, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste.”       (Soorah Maryam 19:28)

How did you get pregnant with this boy? Where did you get this boy from?

Verily this boy was a miracle from Allah the Exalted. Allah wanted for her to have this son, so an angel came to her. The angel informed her that Allah had sent him to her.

(To announce) to you the gift of a righteous son (Soorah Maryam 19:19)

She said: “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?” (Soorah Maryam 19:20)

How can I have a son, I do not have a husband and I have not been unchaste nor committed fornication? So how can I have a son?

And it is from the way of Allah the Exalted that the child is not born except by two parents, between a husband and a wife, man and a woman. He (the angel) informed her that this is what Allah wanted.

She said: “Verily! I seek refuge with the Most Beneficent (Allah) from you, if you do fear Allah.” (Soorah Maryam 19:18)

(The angel) said: “I am only a Messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son.” (Soorah Maryam 19:19)

Allah commanded him (the angel) to blow into the sleeve of her outer garment. Allah the Exalted commanded the angel Jibreel to blow (into the sleeve of her outer garment) the word ‘Be’. Thus Jibreel came with a command from Allah. Thus Jibreel blew the word ‘Be’ that Allah had sent him with (into the sleeve of her outer garment) and thus Maryam became pregnant with Eesa (Jesus) may the best prayers and peace be upon her and our Prophet.

And I remind you and I say to you, this affair is not strange. Because Allah created Adam peace be upon him, without a father or a mother, and we are all offspring of Adam, peace be upon him. This because Adam is the father of all mankind, except for those who follow the Darwin theory of evolution, so if they are not the children of Adam then they are the offspring of monkeys. But as for us, then we are the offspring of Adam; the one who Allah created with His Hands. And Allah breathed a soul into him. And Allah caused him to live in paradise, and Allah created from his rib Hawwa (Eve). After He entered them into paradise He forbade them to eat from the tree. When they ate from the tree He expelled them down to the earth. Thus this has been the linage since Allah created Adam and Hawwa up until this day of ours, and until Allah inherits the earth and all those upon it.

Host: Shaykh Muhammad at the beginning of this gathering we would like for you to speak to us concerning the belief of the Muslims regarding Eesa (Jesus) peace be upon him. And what is the ruling for those who say he was killed and crucified?

Shaykh Uthaymeen: All praises belong to Allah, and may the prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

The belief of the Muslims regards Eesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam peace be upon him, is that he is one of the noble Messengers; rather he is regarded as one of the five Messengers of strong will. And they are: Muhammad, Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Eesa (Jesus) and Nuh (Noah) peace be upon them all.  Allah the Exalted has mentioned them (as a collective group) in two places in His Book. He said in chapter Al Ahzab:

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا

And (remember) when We took from the Prophets their covenant, and from you (O Muhammad), and from Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). We took from them a strong covenant. (Chapter Al Ahzab 33:7)

And He said in Chapter Ash-Shuraa:

شَرَعَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الدِّينِ مَا وَصَّى بِهِ نُوحًا وَالَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ وَمَا وَصَّيْنَا بِهِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى أَنْ أَقِيمُوا الدِّينَ وَلا تَتَفَرَّقُوا فِيهِ

He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion which He ordained for Nuh (Noah), and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad), and that which We ordained for Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and Eesa (Jesus) saying you should establish religion, and make no divisions in it. (Chapter Ash-Shuraa 42:13)

And Eesa (Jesus) peace be upon him is a human from the children of Adam; created from a mother without a father. And he is a slave of Allah, and His Messenger. Thus he is a slave who his not to be worshipped, and he is a Messenger who is not to be disbelieved. And he does not possess any characteristics of Lordship at all. Rather he is, as Allah the Exalted said:

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا عَبْدٌ أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَجَعَلْنَاهُ مَثَلًا لِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ

He [Eesa (Jesus)] was not more than a slave. We granted Our Favor to him, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel. (Chapter Az Zukhruf 43:59)

And he (Eesa-Jesus) did not order his people to take him and his mother as gods to be worshipped instead of worshipping Allah (alone).  Rather he only said to his people:

اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ رَبِّي وَرَبَّكُمْ

Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord (Chapter Al Maidah 5:117)

And he (Eesa-Jesus) peace be upon him was created by the word of Allah the Exalted. As Allah the Exalted said:

إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَى عِنْدَ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ خَلَقَهُ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ

Indeed, the example of Eesa (Jesus) to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, “Be,” and he was. (Chapter Aali Imraan 3:59)

And there was no Messenger between Eesa (Jesus) and the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon them. As Allah the Exalted said:

And [mention] when  Eesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam, said, “O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad (i.e. Muhammad).” But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, “This is obvious magic.”     (Chapter As Saff 61:6)

And no person’s faith will be complete until he believes that Eesa (Jesus) is a slave of Allah and His Messenger, and that he is free and clear of what the Jews attribute to him; those who say that he is the son of an unchaste women and he was born of fornication. We seek refuge in Allah from such as evil statement. Allah the Exalted has exonerated him from that.

And the Muslims are free from the Christians, those who have strayed as it relates to the true understanding concerning Eesa (Jesus) son of Maryam; such that they have taken him and his mother as gods to be worshipped instead of worshipping Allah (alone).  And some of them have said he is the son of Allah. And some of them have said: Allah is the third of the trinity.

As it relates to his killing and crucifixion; Allah the Exalted has surely negated that he was killed or crucified, with a clear absolute negation. Allah the Exalted said:

And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise. And there is none from the People of the Scripture except that he must believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness. (Chapter An Nisaa 4:157-159)

Thus whoever believes that Eesa (Jesus) son of Maryam peace be upon him was killed and crucified has disbelieved in the Quran, and whoever disbelieves in the Quran has disbelieved.

Thus we believe that Eesa (Jesus) peace be upon him was not killed and he was not crucified; rather we say verily the Jews have upon them the sin of killing and crucifying, as they think they killed the Messiah Eesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam, the Messenger of Allah. And they did not kill him in reality; rather they killed someone who was made to resemble him. As Allah placed his resemblance upon one of them, thus they killed and crucified him. And they said: verily we killed the Messiah Eesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam. Thus the Jews have the sin of killing and the sin of crucifixion based upon their assertion upon themselves that they did such.

And Allah the Exalted freed the Messiah Eesa (Jesus) son of Maryam from that, and He protected him, and raised him upon to Himself in the heavens.

And he will return to the earth during the last days and he will judge by the legislation of the Prophet peace be upon him. The he will die on the earth and be buried in it. And he will be raised from it just like the rest of the children of Adam.

From it (the earth) We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time. (Chapter Taha 20:55)

 And His statement:

Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out     (Chapter Al ‘Araf 7:25)
