Shaikh Hammaad al-Ansaaree’s encounter with Maududi

May 20, 2011 1 comment

Shaikh Hammaad al-Ansaaree’s encounter with Maududi:

I visited Maududi (Abul-A’laa Al-Maududi) along with some brothers during the course of his stay in Riyadh and he was in the hotel ‘bat-haa’ so we entered upon him and he was praying the ‘Asr prayer, so I began observing his prayer. So when he finished I said to him:

‘This prayer of yours needs reviewing, for you do not raise your hands, nor do you relax (be at ease) and other than that’

So he said: ‘I am Hanafee in Madhhab’.

So I said to him: ‘this is more overwhelming than the first; since it is impermissible for you to say that, and you are above such a statement. We had come to think from your writings that you are a free-thinker[1], but it has become apparent to us that you are a constricted thinker.’ Then I said to him: ‘indeed Imaam Aboo Haneefah is the one that you blindly follow; yet who are the ones that Imaam Aboo Haneefah blindly followed?’

He remained silent, and Allaah’s Aid is sought.

10 Valid Excuses for Men to Miss the Jama’ah in the Masjid

10 Valid Excuses for Men to Miss the Jama’ah in the Masjid
By Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him)

1.      A sickness which prevents the person from attending

It was narrated that Anas said: “The last time I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he drew the curtain when the people were in rows behind Abu Bakr – May Allah be pleased with him. Abu Bakr wanted to step back, but he gestured to them to stay as they were, and let the curtain drop. He died at the end of that day, and that day was Monday.” [ An-Nias’I 1832]

2.      A meal is ready

The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “ If dinner is ready and the Iqamah for prayer is said, then start with dinner first. “ [ An-Nisa’I 854]

3.      Forgetfulness or sleep

“ We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) when some of the people said: why do you not stop us to rest a while, O Messenger of Allah ? He said : “ I am afraid that you will sleep and miss the prayer.” Bilal said: I will wake you up.” So they laid down and slept , and Bilal leaned back on his mount. Then the Messenger of Allah woke up when the sun had already started to rise and he said” “ O Bilal, what about what you told us? “ He said: “ I have never slept like that before.”…[ An-Nisa’I 847]

4.      A person is obese and can’t attend

Narrated Anas bin Sireen : I heard Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) saying, “ A man from the Ansar said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) , “ I cannot offer As-Salat with you (in congregation).” He was a very fat man and he prepared a meal for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and invited him to his house. He spread out a mat for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and washed one of its sides with water, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered two Rak’a prayers on it…” [ Bukhari 670]

5.      A person has to answer the call to nature

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “ None of you should pray while  suppressing the call of nature. “ [ Ibn Hibban 2107]

6.     A person fears for his wellbeing or property on the road to the masjid

It was narrated from Mahmoud bin Ar-Rabi’ that Itban bin Malik used to lead his people in prayer, and he was blind. He said to the messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) : Sometimes it is dark or rainy or there is a flood, and I am a blind man; O Messenger of Allah, (come and ) pray on a place in my house , so I can take it as a prayer place.” He said: Where would you like me to pray for you?” He showed him a place in his house, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed there.” [ An-Nisa’ 789]

7.      The temperature is extremely cold

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: One night he found it was very cold, so he allowed the people who were with him to pray in their homes. Ibn Umar said, “I saw the Messenger do the same thing when the weather conditions were like this. He ordered the people to pray in their homes.” [ Ibn Hibban 2076]

8.      Rain

Nafi’ narrated that Ibn Umar gave the call to prayer on a cold and windy night, and he said: “ Pray where you are, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to order the Mu’adhdhin, if it was a cold and rainy night to say: ” Pray in your homes.” [ An-Nisa’I 655]

9.      Other reasons of fear, which frightens the person to attend the salah

Amr bin Aws said : “ A man of Thaqif told us that he heard the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a rainy night during a journey saying : Hayya ‘ala as-salah, Hayya ala al-falah, sallu fi rihalikum (come to prayer, come to success, pray in your dwellings. “[ An-Nisa’I 654]

10. Eating garlic and onions

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever eats from these plants mustn’t come to the masjid until its smell is gone. [ Abu Dawud 3828]

A Summary of the Lessons and Benefits of Prayer*1
From Ibnul Qayyim’s The Path to Guidance, Chapter Nine, pp 89-92 ,

Translated by: Aboo ‘Iyaad Amjad Rafiq

(1) That Allaah, the Exalted, wipes away sins by the five prayers.

(2) That the five prayers are an expiation for what occurs between them, if major sins are avoided.

(3) That sins burn and destroy a person, and thus it is necessary to extinguish that with the prayers.

(4) That the Muslim reaches the level of the truthful and the martyrs on account of his prayers, charity and fasting.

(5) The superiority of prayer*2 over other actions.

Pearls from Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen’s book Kitaabul ‘Ilm – Pearl 6

December 5, 2010 Leave a comment

The Sheikh, Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen -rahimahullah- while mentioning the dangers of speaking without knowledge, said:

There are many examples to illustrate (the dangers of) giving religious verdicts (fatwa) without knowledge.  From them:

The verdict that a sick person, if his clothes become defiled and he is not able to clean them, he is informed that prayer is not obligatory upon him until he cleans his clothing.

This verdict is a lie, a mistake and incorrect.  The sick individual prays, even if his clothes contain defilements.  In fact, even if impurities are on his body, and he is not able to clean them (he continues to perform prayer). As Allah says in the Quran (meaning):

“Fear Allah to the best of your ability.” [Surah at-Tagabun 64:16]

Because of this mistaken, incorrect verdict, some Muslims die without praying.  If only they knew that the sick person prays in any state he may be in (according to one’s ability), they would have died while still performing prayer.

Regarding what is obligatory upon men and women to cover of their bodies

A woman is commanded to cover her hair with a veil when she prays by herself in her house, whereby she is allowed to expose it outside the salât. Therefore, it is the Right of Allâh on us to take an adornment when praying.

No one has the right to circumambulate the Ka’bah nakedly[1] even if he is alone in darkness where no one can see him. Likewise, it is not permissible for him to pray nakedly even if he is by himself.

It is from this point that we understand that, taking of an adornment in salât, is not for the purpose of veiling from people. Doing that is one thing and veiling from people is another thing. Also, it is understood that, an individual may cover in salât that which is permissible for him to expose outside the salât, and a woman may expose in salât that which she covers from the sight of men.

The example of the first issue is like that of the shoulders. For verily the Prophet (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam), has forbidden one of us to pray in one cloth that covers not his shoulders this is because it is the right of salât that one covers his shoulders when he prays though it is permissible for him to expose his shoulders to men outside the salât.

Likewise the free woman,[2] it is a must on her to put on a head-covering when praying as the Prophet (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam),  said:

Allâh the Almighty will not accept the prayer of the woman who reached puberty except with a head-covering” though it is not upon her to put on Khimâr [i.e., head-covering] whenever she is with her husband or her family members. That is because it is permissible for her to expose the hidden adornment to them, but it is not permissible for her to expose her head when praying, neither to her family members nor other than them.

And the opposite of that are the face, the hands and the feet. It is impermissible for her to expose these parts to foreign men according to the most correct opinion. Contrary to what was before the abrogation of that rule, as a matter of fact, she is only allowed to expose her garment. But as for covering those parts [face, hands and feet] in salât, it is not obligatory according to the consensus of the scholars though they are from the hidden adornment. But as for the ruling of the hands, the majority of the scholars like Abu Haneefah, Shafi’ee and others, have agreed upon the permissibility of exposing them in salât. And this is one of the narrations of Imam Ahmad. Also, according to Abu Haneefah it is permissible to expose the feet when praying, and this is the strongest opinion; because Ayesha has considered it from the apparent adornment.

[1] It is agreed upon. And it is emanated in “Sahih Abi Dawud” [637] and “Ir’waa Al-Ghalil” [275].

[2] I said: Particularization of Khimâr to the free woman is of the issues that has no proof for it. Rather, the generality of the following Hadith negates that. And look in the previous comment.

Taken from “The Veil of The Muslim Women and Her Dress in Salat” – by Sheikh-ul-Islâm Ibn Taymiyyah which has its verification by the Muhaddith of our times Sheikh Muhammad Nasrideen Al-Albaani may Allâh have mercy on them both. Purchase it @ DTSSBC

How do you Want to be recorded as Today?

September 28, 2010 Leave a comment

Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

  • Whoever prays two rak’ah for Duha will not be recorded as being among the heedless.
  • Whoever prays four rak’ah for Duha will be written as being a servant of Allah, and
  • whoever prays six will be have earned enough for that day.
  • Whoever prays eight rak’ah for Duha, Allah will record him as being among those who are obedient to Him.
  • And whoever prays twelve rak’ah for Duha, Allah will build him a house in Jannah.
  • There isn’t a single day or night that passes except Allah bestows a blessing and charity on His slave. The greatest blessing Allah bestows on His slave is being occupied with the Most High’s remembrance.

Du’aa of Istikhaarah

September 25, 2010 2 comments

Jabir bin Abdullaah –RadhiAllaahu anhu- said the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to teach us al-Istikharah (a prayer said for seeking blessings in carrying out a decision) for all matters, just like he used to teach us a chapter from the Qur’aan, he would say: If any of you intends to undertake a matter then he should pray two Rakah other than an obligatory prayer then he should say the Du’aa of Istikhaarah.

Learn the Dua of Istikhaara – [Listen]
Hisn Al Muslim Min Athkar Al Kitaab Was Sunnah – by Sa’eed Al Qahtani

Ibn al-Qayyim -Rahimullaah- said:
‘So the purpose of al-Istikharah is to rely upon Allaah and entrustment to Him and the capability to fulfill the action with Allaah’s Capability, His knowledge. And that Allaah chooses good for His slave, and this is from those things which necessitate being pleased with Allaah as the Lord. As a person will not taste the flavour of Eemaan if he does not have these things (reliance, entrustment etc), and if he is pleased with destiny after al-Istikharah then that is a sign of happiness.’
[Taken from ‘Za’ad al-Ma’aad’ by Ibn al-Qayyim 2/443-445]

Shaykh Muhammad bin Umar Bazmool said:
‘That al-Istikharah is not done when a person is uncertain about the matter at hand; because the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said: ‘If any of you intends to undertake a matter’ and that the whole of the Dua’ indicates to this point.
So if a Muslim is uncertain about a matter, and he intends to pray al-Istikharah , then he should make a choice between the two matters and then pray al-Istikharah , and then after al-Istikharah he executes that matter, and if it was good then Allaah will make it easy for him and bless him in that, and if it was not good for him, then Allaah turns it away from him and makes easy for him that in which there is good by the permission of Allaah -Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.

Saying “Alhamdu lillah” if they sneeze during Salah?

September 21, 2010 1 comment

Fatwa no. 16903 Q: If a person sneezes while offering salah (Prayer), should they say “Alhamdu lillah [All praise is due to Allah]“? Also, if a person yawns while offering Salah, do they have to say Isti`adhah (saying: “A`udhu-Billahi mina Al-Shaytan -ir-Rajim [I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan]“)?

A: If a person offering Salah sneezes, they should say, “Alhamdu lillah” in a low voice; because there are authentically reported Hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that indicate the permissibility of saying so. As for Isti`adhah after yawning, there is no origin for it in the Shari`ah (Islamic law). However, the person who yawns should hold themselves from yawning as much as they can, but there is no problem if they say Isti`adhah while yawning in or outside Salah.

Salat-ul-Tawbah (Prayer of Repentance)

September 13, 2010 3 comments

Q: When I was a young man, I committed some sins. Alhamdu lillah [All praise is due to Allah], for having guided me to make Tawbah (repentance to Allah). However, I still have doubts about whether Allah has accepted my Tawbah or not. Kindly enlighten me regarding Salat-ul-Tawbah (Prayer of Repentance). May Allah reward you with the best!

A: Alhamdu lillah, Tawbah wipes out all one’s past sins. Therefore, you should give up your doubts that Allah has turned your Tawbah away. Rather, you have to expect good from your Lord and have firm belief that He has accepted your heartfelt Tawbah. This is based on the Ayah (Qur’anic verse) in which Allah says:Surah Al-Nur, 24: 31 And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful In the above Ayah, Allah has made success contingent upon making Tawbah. Anyone who turns in Tawbah to Allah, will achieve success. Allah (Glorified be He) says:Surah TaHa, 20: 82 And verily, I am indeed forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them, (till his death). Allah is the Ever-Truthful Who never breaks His Promises. Allah (Glorified be He) also says:Surah Al-Tahrim, 66: 8 O you who believe! Turn to Allâh with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise)

In the above Ayah Allah’s Promise, as indicated by the words “It may be …”, should be understood to mean that He will surely fulfill His Promise.

Therefore, you have to expect good from Allah and assume that He has accepted your Tawbah provided that you are sincere and full of remorse for committing these past sins. You also have to be determined not to return to doing them again. You have to be aware of incitements of Satan. In one Hadith Qudsy (Revelation from Allah in the Prophet’s words) Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says: I am near to the thought of My Servant as he thinks about Me.

Therefore, you ought to have firm belief that Allah has accepted your Tawbah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Let none of you die without expecting good from Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) (Related by Muslim in his Sahih (authentic) Book of Hadith)

As for Salat-ul-Tawbah, it was authentically reported on the authority of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

Anyone who commits a sin, performs Wudu’ (ablution) properly, and then offers two Rak’ahs (units of Prayer) wherein he asks Allah to forgive his sins, Allah will accept his Tawbah. (Related by Ahmad)May Allah grant us success!
