Ruqyah – Cure for Illness – way of doing it

January 3, 2011 1 comment

Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Mu`awwidhatayn, and Al-Fatihah as a cure for illness

Fatwa no. 446 :
Q: Is it lawful or not to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al- Mu‘awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) and Al-Fatihah for the purpose of seeking healing? Did the Messenger (peace be upon him) or the Salaf (righteous predecessors) do so? Please, enlighten us.

A: Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Mu‘awwidhatayn, Al-Fatihah and other Surahs is regarded as a permissible Ruqyah (reciting Qur’an and saying supplications over the sick seeking healing) which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) legislated by performing it himself and approving it for his Sahabah (Companions). Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated in their two Sahih (authentic) Books of Hadith on the authority of Ma‘mar from Al-Zuhry from ‘Urwah that ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

In his last illness, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to blow breath (into his cupped hands) and recite Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) and then wipe over his body. But when his illness aggravated, I used to recite them over him and pass his own hand over his body for its blessing.

Ma‘mar asked Al-Zuhry “How did he use to blow breath?” He said,

“He used blow into his hands and then pass them over his face.”

Al-Bukhari narrated on the authority of Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudry (may Allah be pleased with him): Some of the Sahabah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) came across one of the Arab tribes, but they refused to extend to them hospitality. Then the leader of that tribe was stung, so they asked (the Sahabah), “Do you have any remedy or someone who can recite supplications over the sick as a cure?” They said, “You refused to offer us hospitality, so we will not do anything until you give us something in return.” And they agreed on a flock of sheep, so one of them (the Sahabah) started reciting Umm Al-Qur’an (Surah Al-Fatihah); gathering his saliva and spitting on it (the snake-bite), and the man got cured. Then they brought the sheep, but they (the Sahabah) said, “We will not take them until we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful).” When they asked him, he smiled and said, “How do you know that it (Surah Al-Fatihah) is a Ruqyah? Take them (the sheep) and assign a share for me.”

The first Hadith indicates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did recite Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn over himself during his illness, while the second shows his approval of his Sahabah’s recitation of Al-Fatihah as Ruqyah.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

Those Who Put Themselves Forward to Teach

January 1, 2011 2 comments

Those Who Put Themselves Forward to Teach
By Shaykh Ahmad Bazmoul (may Allah preserve him)

Based on Ibn Sireen’s words, “ Look at whom you learn your religion from.”, we learn that people who put themselves forward to teach aren’t all on the same level in knowledge and information.

Ibn Abdul Bar said: Only the scholars are Ahul Athar . They understand the religion. The scholars excel by perfecting their knowledge, character and their understanding.

Accordingly, everyone who puts himself forward to teach isn’t worthy to be called a scholar. There are levels for people who appoint themselves as teachers or involve themselves in Dawah.  The levels are as follow:

1.     Scholars who are Mujtahid. They are legists who can formulate independent decisions in legal matters based interpretation and application of the Usul in all subjects of the deen.  This is the category of scholars the people ask for verdicts about their affairs.

2.     Scholars who are Mujtahid. However they haven’t quite reached the level to form independent decisions in all areas of the religion.

3.     Students of knowledge who aren’t scholars.

4.     The general people who learn a few things. After learning these few issues they put themselves forward to speak and give Daw’ah.

5.     People who knowledge can never be gained from.

People are required to be familiar with these five categories of teachers; and distinguish between them. Additionally we- the Muslim community should be aware that everybody who teaches isn’t suitable for issuing our fatawa.

Imam As-Shaf’i said : The only person it’s permissible for to give verdicts about Islamic issues is someone well grounded in the Quran. He must know the abrogated and verses that abrogate , and the Muhkam and Mutashabih verses of the Quran.  Its essential that the person must know the difference between the Meccan and Madeenan verses. Moreover he must know why these verses were revealed and their intended meaning.

After he has all met all those conditions he must knowledgeable in Hadeeth the same way he is about the Quran. He must be an expert in Arabic, poetry, and everything else related to Quranic and Islamic sciences. He uses all this knowledge with fairness and refrains himself from being too talkative.

Once the scholar’s done this he looks and reviews the different issues throughout the major cities in the world. Now he has the genius. And  when  he has reached this level, he can now issues verdicts about what’s Haraam and Halal. Otherwise he doesn’t issue religious rulings and he only speaks about  the issues he knows.

Sufyan Ath-Thawree said, : Take the rulings about what’s halal and haraam from scholars famous for their knowledge, or from the mashaykah (person of higher learning).

Malik said,” A man told me that he visited Rab’eeah and asked him why was he crying?”. The man told Rab’eeh that his crying frightened him, so he asked has a calamity befallen you?” Rab’eeah said, “ No, but religious verdicts are sought from people who haven’t any knowledge. And this is a burning issue within Islam.

Abu Usamah said, “ If you find a man who  diligently seeks knowledge and sits with the people of knowledge, then record what he says.”

Shaykh Al-Fawzan said, “It’s not possible for a person to be caller to Allah’s religion until he has knowledge. If he’s ignorant he doesn’t have the ability to call to Islam. And if he involves himself in Dawah, he will err more times than he’s correct.

The conditions for a caller to Islam-Da’ee:

He must have knowledge before he begins to call others to Islam and teach. Allah says, “This is my way; I invite unto Allah (i.e. to the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge “ [ Yusef 108]

Nonetheless, there are some things that the layman can teach. i.e. how to pray, prevent others from abandoning the congregation, teach his family, and order his children to pray. The layman and student know these issues. Furthermore there are other issues with require understanding. Issues like; Halal and Haram and Tawheed and Shirk. These kinds of issues require knowledge.

10 Valid Excuses for Men to Miss the Jama’ah in the Masjid

10 Valid Excuses for Men to Miss the Jama’ah in the Masjid
By Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him)

1.      A sickness which prevents the person from attending

It was narrated that Anas said: “The last time I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he drew the curtain when the people were in rows behind Abu Bakr – May Allah be pleased with him. Abu Bakr wanted to step back, but he gestured to them to stay as they were, and let the curtain drop. He died at the end of that day, and that day was Monday.” [ An-Nias’I 1832]

2.      A meal is ready

The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “ If dinner is ready and the Iqamah for prayer is said, then start with dinner first. “ [ An-Nisa’I 854]

3.      Forgetfulness or sleep

“ We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) when some of the people said: why do you not stop us to rest a while, O Messenger of Allah ? He said : “ I am afraid that you will sleep and miss the prayer.” Bilal said: I will wake you up.” So they laid down and slept , and Bilal leaned back on his mount. Then the Messenger of Allah woke up when the sun had already started to rise and he said” “ O Bilal, what about what you told us? “ He said: “ I have never slept like that before.”…[ An-Nisa’I 847]

4.      A person is obese and can’t attend

Narrated Anas bin Sireen : I heard Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) saying, “ A man from the Ansar said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) , “ I cannot offer As-Salat with you (in congregation).” He was a very fat man and he prepared a meal for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and invited him to his house. He spread out a mat for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and washed one of its sides with water, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered two Rak’a prayers on it…” [ Bukhari 670]

5.      A person has to answer the call to nature

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “ None of you should pray while  suppressing the call of nature. “ [ Ibn Hibban 2107]

6.     A person fears for his wellbeing or property on the road to the masjid

It was narrated from Mahmoud bin Ar-Rabi’ that Itban bin Malik used to lead his people in prayer, and he was blind. He said to the messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) : Sometimes it is dark or rainy or there is a flood, and I am a blind man; O Messenger of Allah, (come and ) pray on a place in my house , so I can take it as a prayer place.” He said: Where would you like me to pray for you?” He showed him a place in his house, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed there.” [ An-Nisa’ 789]

7.      The temperature is extremely cold

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: One night he found it was very cold, so he allowed the people who were with him to pray in their homes. Ibn Umar said, “I saw the Messenger do the same thing when the weather conditions were like this. He ordered the people to pray in their homes.” [ Ibn Hibban 2076]

8.      Rain

Nafi’ narrated that Ibn Umar gave the call to prayer on a cold and windy night, and he said: “ Pray where you are, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to order the Mu’adhdhin, if it was a cold and rainy night to say: ” Pray in your homes.” [ An-Nisa’I 655]

9.      Other reasons of fear, which frightens the person to attend the salah

Amr bin Aws said : “ A man of Thaqif told us that he heard the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a rainy night during a journey saying : Hayya ‘ala as-salah, Hayya ala al-falah, sallu fi rihalikum (come to prayer, come to success, pray in your dwellings. “[ An-Nisa’I 654]

10. Eating garlic and onions

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever eats from these plants mustn’t come to the masjid until its smell is gone. [ Abu Dawud 3828]

Hope is the Guide & Fear is the Driver – The Journey to Allaah

December 30, 2010 Leave a comment

[The Journey to Allaah : -Ibn Rajab al Hanbali ; pg 62 ]

And worship your Lord till the certainty comes to you . [al Hijr :99]

al Hasan said,

Persistence, persistence! Surely Allaah  has appointed the time of cessation of deeds to be just before death,”

and the he recited the above verse. He also said,

Your souls are your mounts ,so tend to your mounts, in this way they will convey you to your Lord, Mighty & Magnificent.”

The meaning of tending to one’s mounts is to be easy on them, to keep them fit & healthy, & not  to overburden them.

Therefore if one feels his soul is coming to a halt in its travel, he tends to it by inculcating in its the desire to finish the journey,as the situation may demand .

One of the salaf said,

” Hope is the guide & fear is the driver & the soul will stop & it will then need gentle treatment & song to provoke it to into recommencing its journey”.

In this respect the camel leader, who drives on his herd by singing, said,
“its guide gave it glad tidings saying: Tomorrow shall you see bananas & mountains.”

Fear is like a whip & when a person is excessively whips the animal, it could die.As such one must also strike it with  “songs” of hope that would encourage it to eagerly revitalize its efforts until it arrives at the destination .

Abu Yazeed said,

” I have persistently guided my soul to Allaah without letting up, it weeping all the way, then i urged it to on until it laughed”

it is said,

“When it complained of the burdens of the journey,
he promised  it Of the relief of arrival so it revitalized of its efforts.”

When Entering An Empty or Vacant House, Say…

December 18, 2010 Leave a comment

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When someone enters a vacant home, he should say, “As-Salamu ‘Alayna wa ‘Ala ‘Ibad-Allah-is-Saliheen” (“Peace be upon us and on the righteous salves of Allah.”)

Collected by Bukhari in Adabul Mufrad 1055] Graded as being Hasan by Ibn Hajr and Al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on them both)

Al-Albani (may Allah rest him in Jannah) said, “This narration establishes an Islamic regulation for entering a vacant house. This practice coincides with the order of spreading salaams found in some authentic hadeeth. Furthermore this Athar agrees with the verse, “When you enter your houses greet one another with: As-Salamu Alaikum…[ An-Nur 61]

Therefore based on this verse and narration from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) Ibn Hajr held it was recommended to say, “Peace be upon us and on the righteous salves of Allah, when entering an empty house as well.

The Hadeeth for saying,” (In the name of Allah)”, when entering the home is authentic on the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). It is collected in Muslim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,”

“If a man enters his home and says” in the name of Allah” and before he eats, Shaytan says to his Jinn ,” You can’t stay there tonight and you can’t eat there as well.” [ Muslim 5381]

“Whoever says: ‘Glorified is Allah, the Most Great, and praised is He’ [Subhan Allah al-'Adhim wa bi-Hamdih] will have a date palm planted for him in Paradise.”['Sahih al-Jami' #5531]

“Whoever is stricken with sadness, grief, sickness or hardship and says: ‘Allah is my Lord, without any partners’ [Allahu Rabbi, la sharika lah], then it will be removed from him.”  ['Sahih al-Jami' #6040]

“Whoever ate something, then said: ‘Praise be to Allah who has fed me this food and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part’ [al-Hamdu lillah aladhi at'amani hadha wa Razaqnih bi ghayr hawlin minni wa la quwwa] is forgiven his past and future sins.

And whoever wears a garment and says: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part [al-Hamdu lillah aladhi kasani hadha at-thawb wa Razaqnih bi ghayr hawlin minni wa la quwwa] is forgiven his past and future sins.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6086]

“Whoever enters the marketplace and says: ‘There is none worthy of worship except Allah who has no partners, for Him is the Dominion, and for Him is all Praise, He brings life and He causes death, and He is Alive and does not die, in His Hand is all good, and He is able to do all things,’ [La ilaha ill-Allah, Wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-Mulk, wa lahul-Hamd, yuhyiyy wa yumit, wa Huwa Hayyun la yamut, bi Yadihil-Khayr wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir] then Allah will write one million good deeds for him, and will wipe away one million of his bad deeds, and will raise him one million levels and will build a home for him in Paradise.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6231]

“Whoever controls his anger when he is able to act upon it, then Allah will call him to come in front of all of the Creation so that he would let him choose from the Hur al-’Ayn and marry from them whomever he pleases.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6518]

“Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times [Allahumma inni as'aluk al-Jannah], then Paradise will say: ‘O Allah! Enter him into Paradise!’ And whoever seeks protection with Allah from the Fire three times [Allahumma najjini min an-Nar], the Fire will say: ‘O Allah! Protect him from the Fire!’” [Reported by at-Tirmidhi, and it is authentic]

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud said: ‘Whoever reads ‘al-Mulk’ (chapter 67 of the Qur`an) every night, Allah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we used to call it al-mani’ah (that which protects). In the Book of Allah, it is a chapter which – whoever recites it every night – has done very well.” ['Sahih at-Targhib wat-Tarhib' #1475]

“Whoever asks Allah sincerely for martyrdom [Allahumma inni as'aluk ash-shahadah], Allah will cause him to reach the status of the martyrs even if he dies in his bed.” ['Sahih al-Bukhari' #1909]

“No one witnesses that there is none worthy of worship but Allah and that I am Allah’s Messenger – truthfully, from his heart – except that Allah makes the Fire of Hell forbidden to touch him.” [Reported by Muslim, Ahmad, and al-Bayhaqi]

Important Note: In light of these tremendous virtues, it is important to keep in mind that the Salaf (radiallaahu ‘anhum) would throw their good deeds behind them – meaning they would not rely on them nor become complacent – and keep their sins in front of them.

Ashraf Alee Thanvee & Aqeedah Of  Deoband – Built Upon Concocted Lies!!!

After mentioning who the Walee Of Allaah is according to Shaykh Abd al-Qaadir rahimahullaah one should beware of those who concoct lies upon the Shaykh and have deviated far away from his path.  (check here)

Ashraf Alee Thanvee says in his book Malfoozaath Volume 3

# Malfooz Number 41- Para 2

….The third affair of strangeness is that a desciple (mureed)  of Hadhrath Ghaws-al-Aadham ( referring to Shaykh Abd al Qaadir Jeelaanee rahimahullah which means Very Great Helper – This is why they invoke him in the times of need not just at his grave but anywhere, everywhere! Other Awliyaa and Saaliheen and Ambiyaa are considered just helpers but he is considered the greatest aider in the times of distress) narrated a strange incident which is quite astonishing which most probably I have come across in some book of Shaykh Abd-al-Haq Muhaddith Dehlavi.

That once Hadhrath Ghaws-al-Aadham rahimahullah woke up in accordance with his mundane schedule for Salaah at-Thahajjud and stepped out of his monasterial hermitage (Khaankhaah) and this khaadim (desciple) aswell got together with him. After walking for a while they reached a town and soon afterwards entered a house in which there was a congregation and those people stood up after seeing him and he (the Shaykh rahimahullah) seated himself in a position while the desciple also seated himself in a corner.

From a nearby chamber there could be heard a patient’s groaning voice and after sometime this voice disappeared and four people exited (the chamber) with a janaazah and accompanied with them was an old person and this janaazah was placed in front of Hazrath (Shaykh Abd al-Qaadir) and he offered janaazah prayer soon after that congregation took the janaazah and left. The Shaykh got back to his previous position.

When the congregation had left, soon after a person who was a Christian appeared. Hadhrath pulled out the cross hanging on his neck and broke its chain and made him recite the Kalimah and then addressed the congregation that he (this new muslim) is (now) such and such headed back to his hermitage.

After reaching his place he became busy in Salaah at-Thahajjud. After the night passed, this mureed (desciple) questioned Hadhrath as to what the issue was concerning the incident the previous night. Hadhrath said,  that the maqaam to which we had been was a town named Mawsil and that congregation was the jamaah of Abdaal ( A soofee terminology; their belief is that all the affairs of this universe are governed by Abdaal who are human beings and whenever one of them dies, there is a replacement and their number remains fixed) and that ailing person was one of them and they communicated to me spiritually (baathinee – soofees believe their saints have super natural ways to communicate that are far above general human abilities)  that he shall be dying very soon and they requested him to be replaced. This is why I had been there and when he died then I requested Allaah to appoint someone in his place. Then there was an Order from Allaah that in Rome, a Christian  is immersed in worshipping the cross, so he should be appointed as a replacement for the dead person.

Then I asked (Allaah) as to how should his appearance here be requested? He then appeared in a strange abnormal miraculous way and immediately he was converted to a Muslim and placed on the position of abdaal and the message was conveyed that no one should be proud of one’s class/elegance and everything is restricted to My (Allaah’s) Fadhl.

ASHRAF ALEE THANVEE – Muraaqabah At The Graves

Presence Of Graves Of The Ambiyaa alaihim us salaam In India

Some of the noble ones (buzurg)  received kashf (hidden ghayb) that even in India also there are shrines (graves) of certain ambiyaa alaihim us salaam and there is a place after Ambaala (name of a place) there is an enclosure and in it there are these graves/shrines. The signs of these graves have not remained intact of all these graves but for some of them the signs still remain. Maulana Rafee uddeen once visited that place and some students aswell accompanied him and maulana became a MURAAQIB ( Devotee of the grave who medidates at the grave to receive hidden knowledge from the souls and enguages in communication with the dead souls) there and I did not hear from the Mawlaana directly but he mentioned it to his soofi-desciple (mureed) named Hussaini , and this mureed (follower of a peer – soofee shaykh) mentioned it to the son-in law of the Maulana and his son-in-law mentioned it to me that Maulana described the kayfiyah (state) of receiving kashf (hidden ghayb) – the souls of those noble ones (those alleged Prophets) enguaged in a spiritual connection with the Maulana and he met them and it came to be known that from among them one noble person’s name was Khidr or Khidhr and one other was his son (named) Ibraaheem and he informed that his era was Karnaa. With a rigorous research it was found that there was a King Karan (Raja Karan) who lived there and passed away approximately 2000 years from now.

[Note:- Raja Karna is the one mentioned in the hindu religious scriptures, whose city is very close to Ambala]
Conclusion:-
1. Deobandee maulvees become Muraaqib at the graves (known or maj’hool).
2. Receive Kashf from the graves by enguaging in discussion with the dead souls.
3. Dead souls give the living deobandees knowledge of unseen.
4. Through Kashf deobandees come to know things that only Prophets were able to know through revelation. Like names of the Prophets that neither Allaah nor His Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam have informed us, their location of graves, etc.
5. Deobandee maulvees dont have any shame to declare a Prophet named Ibrahim during the time of Raja Karna without any evidence from either the Qur’aan or the Sunnah but by way of Kashf!!!

Pearls from Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen’s book Kitaabul ‘Ilm – Pearl 6

December 5, 2010 Leave a comment

The Sheikh, Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen -rahimahullah- while mentioning the dangers of speaking without knowledge, said:

There are many examples to illustrate (the dangers of) giving religious verdicts (fatwa) without knowledge.  From them:

The verdict that a sick person, if his clothes become defiled and he is not able to clean them, he is informed that prayer is not obligatory upon him until he cleans his clothing.

This verdict is a lie, a mistake and incorrect.  The sick individual prays, even if his clothes contain defilements.  In fact, even if impurities are on his body, and he is not able to clean them (he continues to perform prayer). As Allah says in the Quran (meaning):

“Fear Allah to the best of your ability.” [Surah at-Tagabun 64:16]

Because of this mistaken, incorrect verdict, some Muslims die without praying.  If only they knew that the sick person prays in any state he may be in (according to one’s ability), they would have died while still performing prayer.

Giving a part of Ud-hiyah/Aqeeqah meat to non-Muslim neighbors

November 13, 2010 Leave a comment

Q 1: If a neighbor is a Kafir (non-Muslim), but he never disturbs me with regard to ‘Ibadah (worship); is it permissible to give him from the Ud-hiyah (sacrificial animal offered by non-pilgrims) and from the ‘Aqiqah (sacrifice for a newborn)? Respected Shaykh, we hope you will clarify this issue for us.

A: It is permissible to give a Kafir from the meat of an Ud-hiyah or ‘Aqiqah, as a way of showing kindness to the neighbor and fulfilling our Islamic duty as neighbors.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet, his family and Companions!

One Udhiyah is sufficient on behalf of a man and the members of his household

November 13, 2010 1 comment

- One Udhiyah is sufficient on behalf of a man and the members of his household
- Ud-hiyah offered by your father is not sufficient for you if you are living with your family in a separate house

FatwasDhul-Hijjah Fatwas > What is the ruling on Ud-hiyah?

Q: I am married, praise be to Allah, and I have children. I live in a city other than the city in which my family lives, but on holidays I go to the city where my family is. On ‘Eid-ul-Adha (the Festival of the Sacrifice), my children and I came five days before the ‘Eid but we did not offer the Ud-hiyah (sacrificial animal offered by non-pilgrims) even though I am able to, praise be to Allah.

Is it permissible for me to offer Ud-hiyah? Is my father’s Ud-hiyah valid on behalf of myself and my wife and children? What is the ruling on Ud-hiyah for the one who is financially able? Is it obligatory on the one who is not able? Is it permissible to take a loan in order to offer the Ud-hiyah? A.A.Sh. Rafha’ the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

A: The Ud-hiyah is a Sunnah (supererogatory act of worship following the example of the Prophet), not Wajib (obligatory), and one sheep is sufficient on behalf of a man and the members of his household, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to sacrifice two-horned rams that were white speckled with black, every year; one on behalf of himself and the members of his household, and the other on behalf of those among his Ummah (nation based on one creed) who believe in the Oneness of Allah.

If you, dear questioner, are living in a separate house, then the Ud-hiyah offered by your father on behalf of himself and the members of his household is not sufficient for you, because you are not living with them in the same house. It is prescribed for you to offer Ud-hiyah on behalf of yourself and your family. There is nothing wrong with a Muslim taking a loan to offer Ud-hiyah if he is able to repay it. May Allah grant us all success
