Allaah Swears by these 10 Days, odd and even

Allaah swears by these days.

1. By the dawn;
2. By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah),
3. And by the even and the odd .

[al-Fajr, ayat 1-3]

The Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said,

The ten are the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and the odd is the Day of Arafah and the even is the Eid.

[Ahmad 3/327, and Bazzar 2286]. Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah) graded the isnad of this hadeeth as being Hasan.

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « مَنْ صَلَّى الْغَدَاةَ فِى جَمَاعَةٍ ثُمَّ قَعَدَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ كَانَتْ لَهُ كَأَجْرِ حَجَّةٍ وَعُمْرَةٍ

Anas ibn Malik (radi Allahu Anhu) said, The Prophet (sallahu Alayhi wa salim) said,

" Whoever prays Fajr in congregation ,after that sits and remembers Allah until the sunrises, following this he prays two rakah earns the reward of Hajj or Umrah."

Questioner: What kind of intercession is it that a child will do for his father when his father was someone who had given an aqiqah on behalf of that child? [The Aqiqah being the Sunnah of sacrificing two sheep for the new-born boy and one for the girl]

Al-Albaani: It is known in many hadiths that on the Day of Resurrection there will be young children standing at the gate of Paradise, crying and asking for their fathers. So Allaah the Blessed and Most High will send Jibreel عليه السلام to ask them why they are crying–even though He the Blessed and Most High knows better about them–so Jibreel عليه السلام will ask them and they will reply, saying, ‘We will not enter Paradise except that our fathers are with us.’ So the Lord of the Worlds will give permission to them and their fathers to enter Paradise.

So this type of intercession, i.e., hastening entry into Paradise, is what those fathers who offered aqiqah’s on behalf of their children, i.e., sacrificed on their behalf when they were born, deserve.

Attaining Two Rewards for Trying to Accomplish what You are Aiming For

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said,

“Indeed those things which inhibit a person from attaining what he is aiming for are numerous.  But by seeking Allaah’s Aid, the Mighty and Majestic, and by expending [the required] effort he will achieve his goal.  And let it be known that every time the diversion is stronger then the one seeking [his goal] will be in a jihaad, and that every time the distraction is stronger but the person drives it away then through that he will receive two rewards: the reward for doing the [righteous] action and the reward for repelling the hindrance and for this reason the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said,

“Ahead of you there are days of patience, when patience will be like grasping live coals, and the one who does good deeds will have the reward of fifty Companions,” because of the numerousness of the things that hinder.”

Advice concerning the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah – Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen

In the name of Allaah, The All-Wise, The All-Knower, and may peace and blessings be upon the noblest of Prophets and Messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions, as for what follows;

Advice concerning the Ten days of Dhul-Hijjah by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him.

Question:

Oh noble sheikh, in a few days we wll be entering into the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. So what is your advice for the people regarding taking advantage of them? I hope for an explanation of its’ virtues and the actions that should be performed in it.

Answer: The ten days of Dhul-Hijjah begins wth the entrance of the month and ends on the day of the ‘eid. The Messneger, may peace and blessings be upon him, said about actions in these ten days:

“There are no days wherein righteous actions are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days.” They said: Not even jihad in the way of Allaah? He said: “Not even jihad in the way of Allaah, except for a man who leaves out (for jihad) with his wealth and self and doesn’t return back with any of them.”[Ibn 'Abbaas-Saheeh Bukhaaree]

So with this I strongly encourage my muslim brothers to sieze this tremendous oppurtunity, to perform many righteous actions in these ten days from recitation of the Qur’aan, rememberance of Allaah, charity, fasting, etc, strive to perform many different acts of obedience.

Its’ very troubling to see that the people are heedless about these ten days. Do you not find them exerting themselves in the last ten nights of Ramadan? Na’m of course they exert themselves in them. However with the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah you will be hard pressed to find one who differentiates between them and other than them. But if a person performs righteous actions in these ten days he revives that which the Messneger, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed with doing.

Also if an individual intends to slaughter at the ending of these ten days then he shouldn’t remove anything from his hair, nails, or body.

As for someone slaughtering on his behalf, then there’s nothing wrong with him clipping his own nails or cutting his hair. And if a person wants to slaughter for himself and his household with one sacrifice as is the sunnah, then it isn’t upon his family to abide by this principle. It only pertains to the one slaughtering, in this instance that being the father…

What are the best righteous deeds after the obligatory duties?

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah was asked the following question:
I asked the Shaykh, who followed in the footsteps of the earlier generations and was the example for the later generations, the most knowledgeable man I have ever met in the east or the west, Taqiy al-Deen Abu’l-‘Abbaas Ahmad ibn Taymiyah, to point out to me what is the best righteous deed after the obligatory duties. 
He (may Allaah have mercy on him) replied as follows:
What you have asked about, the best deed after the obligatory duties, varies from one person to another, depending on what they are able to do and what is best at any given time. So it is not possible to give a comprehensive, detailed answer that suits everyone. But what those who have knowledge of Allaah and His commands are agreed upon is that constantly remembering Allaah (dhikr) is the best thing with which a person may occupy himself in general.
Therefore the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah narrated by Muslim says:
“ ‘The mufridoon have gone ahead.’ 
They said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, who are the mufridoon?’ 
He said, ‘Those men and women who remember Allaah much.’” 
And Abu Dawood narrated from Abu’l-Dardaa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Shall I not tell you of the best of your deeds and that which is most pure in the sight of your Lord, that which raises you more in status and is better for you than giving gold and silver (in charity), and better than your meeting your enemy and striking their necks and they strike your necks?’
They said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.’
He said, ‘Remembering Allaah (dhikr).’” 
There is a great deal of Qur’aanic evidence to support this.
The least that a person should do is to persist in reciting the adhkaar (pl. of dhikr) which have been narrated from the teacher of good and the leader of the pious (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), such as the adhkaar to be recited at certain times, at the beginning and end of the day, when going to bed and waking up from sleep and after the prescribed prayers; and the adhkaar to be recited on certain occasions, such as that to be said when eating and drinking, when getting dressed, when having intercourse, when entering or leaving the home, the mosque or the washroom, when it rains, when thunder is heard, and so on.
Books have been compiled on this topic called ‘Aml al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah (Actions of the Day and Night).
One of the best books written on this topic is the small book entitled Saheeh al-Kalim al-Tayyib, which is derived from the book by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah called al-Kalim al-Tayyib; this has been edited by al-‘Allaamah al-Albaani.
Then one should persist in remembering Allaah in general, the best of which is Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah.
There may be some situations where certain kinds of dhikr are preferable, such as saying Subhaana Allaah wa’l-hamdu-Lillaah wa Allaahu akbar wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah.
Moreover, one should realize that everything that the tongue utters or the heart imagines that may bring one closer to Allaah, such as seeking knowledge or teaching, enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, is a kind of dhikr or remembering Allaah. Hence the one who occupies himself in the pursuit of beneficial knowledge after performing the obligatory duties, or who joins a gathering in order to learn or teach, which Allaah and His Messenger have called fiqh or understanding, is also doing something which is one of the best forms of remembering Allaah (dhikr).
If you think about it, you will not find much difference of opinion among the earliest generation concerning what is the best of deeds. Whenever a person is confused he should pray istikhaarah as prescribed in sharee’ah, for the one who prays to Allaah asking Him for that which is best (istikhaarah) will not have any regrets.
He should do that a lot, and make a lot of du’aa’, for that is the key to all goodness. He should not be hasty and say “I prayed but I did not get an answer.” He should seek out the times of special virtue, such as the end of the night, the times immediately following the prescribed prayers, the time of the adhaan, when rain is falling, and so on.

“Whoever says: ‘Glorified is Allah, the Most Great, and praised is He’ [Subhan Allah al-'Adhim wa bi-Hamdih] will have a date palm planted for him in Paradise.”['Sahih al-Jami' #5531]

“Whoever is stricken with sadness, grief, sickness or hardship and says: ‘Allah is my Lord, without any partners’ [Allahu Rabbi, la sharika lah], then it will be removed from him.”  ['Sahih al-Jami' #6040]

“Whoever ate something, then said: ‘Praise be to Allah who has fed me this food and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part’ [al-Hamdu lillah aladhi at'amani hadha wa Razaqnih bi ghayr hawlin minni wa la quwwa] is forgiven his past and future sins.

And whoever wears a garment and says: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part [al-Hamdu lillah aladhi kasani hadha at-thawb wa Razaqnih bi ghayr hawlin minni wa la quwwa] is forgiven his past and future sins.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6086]

“Whoever enters the marketplace and says: ‘There is none worthy of worship except Allah who has no partners, for Him is the Dominion, and for Him is all Praise, He brings life and He causes death, and He is Alive and does not die, in His Hand is all good, and He is able to do all things,’ [La ilaha ill-Allah, Wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-Mulk, wa lahul-Hamd, yuhyiyy wa yumit, wa Huwa Hayyun la yamut, bi Yadihil-Khayr wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir] then Allah will write one million good deeds for him, and will wipe away one million of his bad deeds, and will raise him one million levels and will build a home for him in Paradise.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6231]

“Whoever controls his anger when he is able to act upon it, then Allah will call him to come in front of all of the Creation so that he would let him choose from the Hur al-’Ayn and marry from them whomever he pleases.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6518]

“Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times [Allahumma inni as'aluk al-Jannah], then Paradise will say: ‘O Allah! Enter him into Paradise!’ And whoever seeks protection with Allah from the Fire three times [Allahumma najjini min an-Nar], the Fire will say: ‘O Allah! Protect him from the Fire!’” [Reported by at-Tirmidhi, and it is authentic]

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud said: ‘Whoever reads ‘al-Mulk’ (chapter 67 of the Qur`an) every night, Allah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we used to call it al-mani’ah (that which protects). In the Book of Allah, it is a chapter which – whoever recites it every night – has done very well.” ['Sahih at-Targhib wat-Tarhib' #1475]

“Whoever asks Allah sincerely for martyrdom [Allahumma inni as'aluk ash-shahadah], Allah will cause him to reach the status of the martyrs even if he dies in his bed.” ['Sahih al-Bukhari' #1909]

“No one witnesses that there is none worthy of worship but Allah and that I am Allah’s Messenger – truthfully, from his heart – except that Allah makes the Fire of Hell forbidden to touch him.” [Reported by Muslim, Ahmad, and al-Bayhaqi]

Important Note: In light of these tremendous virtues, it is important to keep in mind that the Salaf (radiallaahu ‘anhum) would throw their good deeds behind them – meaning they would not rely on them nor become complacent – and keep their sins in front of them.

Fasting on The Day of Arafah

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum,

Bismillāh:

On the authority of Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī (1):

…The Messenger of Allāh, prayers and peace upon him, was asked about fasting on The Day of ‘Arafah. [He, prayers and peace upon him, replied]: ‘Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah is an expiation of last year’s and next year’s sins.’ [Collected by Muslim/#1162]

[Issues Pertaining to this Prophetic Tradition]

[1]: What is ‘Arafah?

Shaykh al-‘Uthaymīn [d. 1421 AH], may Allāh have mercy on him, said:

‘Arafah is a well-known place related to the rites of Ḥajj, and standing at ‘Arafah is a pillar of Hajj [i.e. it is something that the pilgrim must do]…The Messenger of Allāh said: ‘Hajj is ‘Arafah.’ (2)/(3)

[2]: What is The Day of ‘Arafah?

He (Shaykh al-‘Uthaymīn), may Allāh have mercy on him, also said:

The Day of ‘Arafah is the ninth of Thūl Ḥijjah according to the Islamic calendar. It has been named The Day of ‘Arafah because it is the day when all pilgrims stand at ‘Arafah. (4)

[3]: Benefits from This Prophetic Tradition:

Shaykh al-‘Uthaymīn [d. 1421 AH], may Allāh have mercy on him, said (summarized): Some benefits of this Prophetic practice are what follows:

1. The diligence of the Companions in seeking beneficial knowledge

2. The rewards for performing an action are of two types:

a.) [you will] be given something desirable; or

b.) [you will] have something undesirable removed.

The reward for fasting The Day of ‘Arafah is of the second type (i.e. having something undesirable removed) due to the statement of the Messenger of Allāh: ‘Fasting the day of ‘Arafah is an expiation of last year’s sins.’

3. It is possible for past, as well as future sins to be expiated… (5)

[4]: The Fiqh Ruling on Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah:

In the Ḥanbalī fiqh book Zād al-Mustaqnī, Imām al-Ḥajjāwi [d. 968 AH], may Allāh have mercy him, wrote: “And fasting the day of ‘Arafah is recommended…” (6)

[5]: If a Muslim is performing Ḥajj, does he or she fast The Day of ‘Arafah?:

Al-’Allāmah, Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān, may Allāh preserve him, wrote:

…Prophetic guidance teaches us that it is not recommended for a pilgrim standing at ‘Arafah (i.e. performing Ḥajj) to fast. This is because the Messenger of Allāh, prayers and peace upon him, did not fast while standing at ‘Arafah (7). The reason that he, prayers and peace upon him, did not fast is so that he would have strength to stand and supplicate whilst at ‘Arafah.

So, it is not from the way of the Prophet for a pilgrim to fast on The Day of ‘Arafah. Rather, from his way is not to fast on that day (i.e. if one is a pilgrim performing Ḥajj). (8)

[6]: When is The Day of ‘Arafah?:

As mentioned in the beginning of this article, The Day of ‘Arafah is the ninth day of Thūl ‘Ḥijjah according to the Islamic calendar. That will correspond with Monday, November 15th, 2010, Allāh willing.

May Allah, The Most High, grant all of the pilgrims a successful and accepted Ḥajj, and may He, The Most High, grant those who haven’t been given the opportunity to make Ḥajj the chance to do so in the near future. Indeed, He is the One able to answer our supplications.

Official decision and announcement of the High Judiciary Council (HJC) of Saudi Arabia regarding the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah.

1 Dhul-Hijjah will be tomorrow, Sunday 7 November 2010, and the Muslims performing Hajj will be in ‘Arafah on Monday 15 November 2010 (9 Dhul-Hijjah 1431), and the Muslim Ummah shall be celebrating ‘Eed al-Adhaa on Tuesday 16 November 2010, (10 Dhul-Hijjah 1431), inshaa.-Allaah.

Significance & Virtues of the Day of Arafah

Fasting on the day of Arafah is an expiation for two years. :

The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the day of ’Arafah, since it is on this day that the pilgrims gather at the mountain plain of ’Arafah, praying and supplicating to their Lord. It is mustahabb (highly recommended) for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day, since the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on the day of ’Arafah, so he said, “It expiates the sins (Minor) of the past year and the coming year.” [Muslim (no. 1162)]

Imaam at-Tirmidhee (d.275H) – rahimahullaah – said, “The People of Knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the day of ’Arafah, except for those at ’Arafah.” [Muslim (no. 1348)]

Allah frees slaves from the fire on Arafat more than any other day

Likewise, the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘There is no day on which Allaah frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ’Arafah. He comes close to those (people standing on ’Arafah), and then He revels before His Angels saying, ‘What are these people seeking.” [Jaami’ut-Tirmidhee (3/377)]

Forgiveness of the Sins even if they are like the foam on the Sea

As for you staying till the evening in Arafah, then Allaah descends to the sky of the Duniya and He boasts about you to the Angels, and says: ‘My slaves have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy, so if your sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth My slaves! Having forgiveness and for what or who you have interceded for.’

In Al-Saheehayn it was reported from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) that a Jewish man said to him, “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, there is an aayah in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as an ‘Eid (festival).” ‘Umar said, “Which aayah?” He said: “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [al-Maa’idah 5:3 – interpretation of the meaning]. ‘Umar said, “We know on which day and in which place that was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It was when he was standing in ‘Arafaah on a Friday.”

Allaah expresses His pride to His angels

It was reported from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah expresses His pride to His angels at the time of ‘Ishaa’ on the Day of ‘Arafaah, about the people of ‘Arafaah. He says, ‘Look at My slaves who have come unkempt and dusty.’”

Narrated by Ahmad and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

The standing on ‘Arafaat is the hajj.

The standing on ‘Arafaat is the hajj. The crowds should remind you of the Day of Resurrection. Humble yourself to Allaah, manifest your ‘uboodiyyah to Him Alone through du’aa, sincere intention and strong determination to free yourself from the sins of the past and to build up a commitment to rush for doing what is good. Think of becoming a better person when you return. Rid yourself of false pride and showing off because it may ruin what you gain on this day.
