Jamā’at ut-Tablīgh: “We have caused the people to be lost in the name of Tawhīd” – Shaykh Fawzan

Questioner:

One of the callers of Jamā’at ut-Tablīgh says,

“We have caused the people to be lost in the name of Tawhīd and have encouraged them upon sinning. And this is due to the statement that the Muwahhid (person of Tawhīd) will enter Paradise regardless of his sins other than Shirk. Tawhīd, Tawhīd and Tawhīd. So how will we respond to Allāh عز وجل regarding the existence of these sinners?”

So the question is, what is your Excellency’s opinion regarding this statement.

Shaykh Sālih bin Fawzān bin ‘Abdullāh al-Fawzān:

This is the statement of an ignoramus or a misguided one. Either he is an ignoramus and does not know the speech regarding the issues of knowledge, or he knows yet is misguided and desires misguidance of the people.

So there is no doubt that Shirk is the greatest of the sins and that its committer will not enter Paradise, period. And as for the committer of sins, even if they be major and not Shirk, then forgiveness and entrance to Paradise will return to him. And this is something which is not from us.

Allāh جل وعلا says, “Verily, Allāh forgives not that partners should be set up with Him in worship, but He forgives that (anything else) to whom He pleases” (An-Nisā’ 4: 48).

And in the Hadīth [the Messenger ﷺ said, that Allāh will say,] “Remove from the Fire whosoever has in his heart īmān equivalent to the weight of mustard seed” [Narrated by Abī Sa'īd and reported by Bukhārī & others].

So Tawhīd guarantees for its possessor Paradise, either in the beginning or in the end, even if he is punished (in Hell). As for the Mushrik then there is no security for him ever.

“It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allāh and worship none but Him alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allāh)… “ (Al-An’ām: 6: 82) meaning by Shirk. “…for them (only) there is security and they are the guided” (Al-An’ām: 6: 82).

So the people of Tawhīd have security, those who do not cover their īmān with Zulm meaning Shirk have security, either completely or in the end. As for the Mushrik then he has no security, period. And he is eternally in the Fire.

So this one who says that Tawhīd caused the people to be lost, then this – and Allāh’s Refuge is sought – is atrocious speech. This is atrocious speech, false speech. Tawhīd is what rectified the people and it is what will save the people on the Day of Resurrection from the Fire. So, it (Tawhīd) is the basis, and it is the foundation. And there is no comparison between the (ordinary) sin and Shirk. Shirk is the greatest of sins, and there is no salvation alongside of it. As for the sins then they are under the will (of Allāh). If Allāh Wills He can punish their committer and if He Wills He can forgive him. And if he is punished then his final outcome will (eventually) be Paradise. Na’am.

Women Callers Teaching in the Mosques – Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee

February 6, 2013 Leave a comment

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu ‘ala rasulullaah
Amma-ba’d

Below is an excellent yet brief discussion from the Hadeeth scholar of the era, al-Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah), regarding an aspect of the role of women in da’wah. I have discussed this issue many times over the years with my brothers in the da’wah and always inclined towards the position that women should attend the duroos of the Salafi mashayikh and tullaabul-’ilm and not insist on women establishing circles in the Masaajid, claiming that “they will attract an all-female audience!”

Indeed is it known that the Prophets and Messengers (alaihimus-salaatu was-salaam) were all male, and was not said by those who believed and followed them, “Why has Allaah not sent a female Messenger for the women?”. The Prophets were sent by Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) and they came with Revelation for their particular nation, which would consist of males and females, they would judge between them by way of the Book that they were sent with, amongst the males and females – and our Lord oppresses no one. This continued until the sending of our Messenger Muhammad (salallaahu ‘alaihi wassallam) – the finality and seal of the Prophets sent to the whole of mankind and jinn, male and female.

This of course does not exclude the women from teaching as is well-known in Islaam. Shaikh al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) stated:

“So, if there is found amongst the women today, those who were given something from knowledge and sound understanding derived from the Book and Sunnah, then there is no problem that she has a private sitting in her house or in one of the homes of the sisters, this is better for them.” (See below the full quote).

This is the woman who is firmly grounded in knowledge – affirmed by those who are known for knowledge themselves. Not merely a sister who sets herself up as a teacher (and starts teaching in her home) without being grounded in knowledge or is unknown to the Scholars and the students of knowledge. She should be known to the scholars and/or the students of knowledge who, in turn, are themselves well-known …..

Women Callers Teaching in the Mosques
Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee (d.1420H)
Translation by Abu Suhayl Anwar Wright

Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee (d.1420H) – rahimahullaah – said whilst mentioning the benefits extracted from the hadeeth (no. 2680) in as-Saheehah (6/401),

in it is the permissibility of making promises (al-waâd) and al-Bukhaaree (d.256H) inserted a chapter heading for this hadeeth with the name, Should there be a day of learning made specifically for the women?

I say (al-Albaanee):

As for what has become widespread here in Damascus in recent times from the women going to and from the mosques at particular times to have lessons from one of them (i.e. the other women) who call themselves women callers (daaiyaat) as they claim, then that is from the newly invented matters which were not present during the time of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) or the time of the Salafus-Saalih. Rather, that which was known is that they must be taught by the righteous Scholars in a particular place just as it comes in this hadeeth, or they were taught in the lessons of the men, but separate from them in the mosque if possible. If the case is not like this, they will be overtaken by the men, and knowledge would not be able to be obtained or be asked about.

So, if there is found amongst the women today, those who were given something from knowledge and sound understanding derived from the Book and Sunnah, then there is no problem that she has a private sitting in her house or in one of the homes of the sisters, this is better for them.  How can this not be when the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said regarding (the women) and the congregational Prayer, And their homes are better for them.So if this is the affair regarding the Prayer, which it is incumbent that in it the woman has to adhere to the etiquette and modesty which she is not abundant in outside of the Prayer, how can she not have even more of this quality in seeking knowledge??  Especially because one of them raises their voice and another may also do this along with her, so there occurs this reprehensible, repugnant buzzing noise in the mosque, and this is what we have heard and witnessed unfortunately.

Then afterwards I saw this newly invented matter traverse to other lands like Amman (Jordan) for example. We ask Allaah for the well being from every newly invented innovation.

Imaam al-Albaanee – rahimahullaah – said commenting on the hadeeth (no. 1999) in Saheehut-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb (2/442),

And its takhreej (i.e. the above hadeeth) is in as-Saheehah (no. 2680) and there I mentioned the innovated matter of the women teaching other women in the mosque, just as some of them do in Damascus and in other places. Indeed, the Prophet spoke the truth when he said, And their homes are better for them.

Two Da’wahs And What A Great Rift Between Them – Shaykh Muhammad al-Anjaree

Two Da’wahs And What A Great Rift Between Them
ash-Shaykh Aboo `Uthmaan Muhammad bin `Uthmaan al-`Anjaree
Translated by Aboo Sufyaan ‘Uthmaan Beecher
Salafiyyah-Kuwait.blogspot.com

 The Da’wah Sharee’ah  The Da’wah Siyaasiyyah
(the political da’wah)
The Da’wah Sharee’ah [1] has its basis in the Book and the Sunnah, and its starting point is love for Allaah and desire for His Jannah (Paradise) and fear of His (Hell)Fire, and the way which the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and his Companions (radiAllaahu anhuma) were upon. Its end result is with Allaah, “Verily, you do not guide those whom you love, but Allaah guides whomever He wills.” [2] The da’wah Siyaasiyyah (the political da’wah) [3] has its basis in politics, its starting point is ideological, and its means are the party and the organization and the jamaa’ah, and its end result is planned and designed.
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah seeks to unite the Ummah upon the foundations of the belief which the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) and his Companions embodied by the saying of Allaah the Exalted: “And hold on to the Rope of Allaah all of you together and do not divide amongst yourselves.” [4]

Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah seeks to struggle for the promotion of parties (ahzaab) in the Muslim country to secure for itself a seat amongst the ranks of the [other] parties of the state. And they read the saying of Al-Haqq [Allaah], the Exalted: “And be not like those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is a terrible punishment.” [5]

And His saying, Exalted is He:

“But they have broken their religion into sects, each group rejoicing in what it has.” [6]

Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah criticizes by sincere advice, by eloquence and wisdom and handsome admonition, complying with the principles of the Sharee’ah. Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah criticizes by open demonstrations, sit-ins and strikes, and through rousing the (people in the) street under the pretense of islaah (rectification)
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah is concerned with the guidance of mankind to obedience to Allaah and adherence to His law(shar ‘) Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah is concerned with the achievement of appeasing the people through success in elections, and then exerting pressure on the government to meet their partisan demands, the most important of which is their reaching power (in the government)
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah looks to the Muslim for what is apparent, and that verily he is from among the Muslims, and you address him with the name of Islaam. Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah looks to the Muslim for what is of benefit to the party (hizb) and the organization, so perhaps this is often the cause of their saying: “so and so is a secularist”, “so and so is a liberal”, “un-islaamic” , and so on.
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah, its leaders are the `Ulamaa ar-Rabbaaniyoon [7] recognized for their leadership and protection [of the Ummah], like : al-`Allaamah Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee, al-`Allaamah `Abdul-`Azeez bin Baaz and al-`Allaamah Muhammad bin Saalih al-’Uthaymeen ? may Allaah have mercy upon them all -, so verily from them was an effect on hearts of the common Muslims and the students of knowledge. Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah, its leaders are the politicians. They have no connection to knowledge, and they don’t have an effect on the hearts of the common Muslims, verily their effect is on the members of the Hizb (party) and the organization only.
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah calls them to believe and work in the da’wah to earn Allaah’s Pleasure, and not on the basis of gaining status and prestige. Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah, some of its call is their making an affiliation to the hizb (party) a means to achievement, so it is their means for obtaining position and status.
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah, its callers spend from their own wealth, as embodied in the saying of the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) “And do not ask the people for anything” [8], and by that they are also in agreement with the Prophets (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) saying: “The upper hand is better than the lower hand.” [9] Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah , its collection boxes and bank allotments and asking of the people is their constant, inseparable characteristic. Indeed it is from their most apparent traits. And they believe that these financial resources are a mainstay of their da’wah and their activities.
The people of Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah, their manhaj (methodology) is clear for them, so there is no secrecy and no covertness, so they are “upon al-Baydaa’ (a clear proof), its night is like its day (in clarity).” [10] Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah, their manhaj is secrecy and obscurity, and devoid of clarity in those matters that it is obligatory to make clear.
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah, its positions are fixed and clear, and even if it differs with most of mankind. Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah, its positions change, so what was correct yesterday perhaps will be wrong today, and what was wrong today could be correct tomorrow, and so on.
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah derives the steps of islaah (rectification) through the legislative texts [i.e. the Qur'aan and authentic Sunnah], and even if this rectification wasn’t achieved, so verily he (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: ” And a Prophet will come and there will not be anyone with him” [11]- meaning a Prophet from among the Prophets of Allaah will come on Yawm al-Qiyaamah (the Day of Resurrection) and not one person believed in him, and he didn’t change the condition of any one from the individuals of his society which he was sent amongst, so this Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) called to rectification, and no one from his people answered him. Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah derives the steps of islaah through achievement of forming the political decision, and through “the aim justifies the means”.
Ad-Da’wah ash-Sharee’ah, its flags and signs are known by their scholastic efforts through exerting themselves to spread the correct `Aqeedah and the Sunnah. Ad-Da’wah as-Siyaasiyyah, its flags and signs are manifest and known by the virtues of the Jamaa’ah and the Hizb and its wealth and its influence, so if you go back in your memory through history, you know that its leaders who were well known, they didn’t reach the position which they reached except through the Jamaa’ah, the Hizb, and its wealth. I will give you an example to make clear the difference between the true flags of al-Haqq (the truth) and other than them:

So al-`Allaamah Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee, verily love of him is fixed firmly in the hearts of al-`Aalaameen, and his leadership in `uloomud-Deen (the sciences of the Religion) is firmly established through his strength and steadfastness in sharee’ (legislated) knowledge. And there was no charity to publish his books, and no committee to pay for his expenses, no organization to sponsor his residency visa, and no hizb which promotes his efforts, nor media to publish his essays and show his pictures. On the contrary, his establishment in knowledge was his sign, so he was able to face the nations and the people with his knowledge and understanding, without any organization or leader, and no support except through the Tawfeeq of Allaah. Therefore it was his knowledge which made his leadership a duty upon him in all areas. Noble reader, the saying goes:”And with its opposite, things are made known.”

[TN]: The narrations that show that the way of Ahlus-Sunnah is not asking the people for their filth (their sadaqaat) are many and clear. So those who ascribe themselves to the way of the Salaf and want to call to the Haqq, they do not establish their da’wah upon asking for the peoples money. Rather they establish their da’wah upon hard work and spending upon their da’wah from their own pockets. And Shaykh Ahmad as-Subay’ee explains, you will not find even one athar (narration) from the Companions, nor the Taabi’een, nor the Atbaa’ut-Taabi’ een, nor those who followed after them where they stood up in the masjid to ask the people for their sadaqaat ý not one! And if this had been their way and their guidance, they would have done it. And from those matters which distinguish the Da’watus-Salafiyyah from all the other da’waat is that we take the understanding of the Book and the Sunnah from these aathaar (narrations) from the Salaf of this Ummah, contrary to the political groups and parties.

The Disbelievers are like Cattle; Rather they are more astray!

November 13, 2012 Leave a comment

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu ‘ala rasulullaah
Amma-ba’d

Shaykh al-’Utaybi’s Explanation of Allaah’s Statement (which means):
The Disbelievers are like Cattle; Rather they are more astray!

During his lecture “Refraining From The Disobedience of Allaah,” Shaykh Abu ‘Umar al-’Utaybi (hafidhahullaah Ta’aala) said:

Allaah, Subhanahu wa Ta’aala, said about the disbelievers – those who do not believe in Allaah and the Last Day – that they are like cattle:

And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray! They are the heedless ones. (Al-A’raf, ayah 179)

They are like cattle —-> because they don’t learn the commands and prohibitions, and they don’t act upon them.

Rather they are more astray —–> Why are they more astray?

1- The first question is: Why did Allaah make the disbelievers as the cattle?
2- The second question is: Why did Allaah say: بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ (Rather they are more misguided and astray)?

Allaah said the disbelievers are like the animals because they don’t learn Allaah’s Deen, nor do they implement it. Because the animals don’t learn. They don’t read or write or teach (Allaah’s Religion). They only eat and seek their pleasure.

Why are the disbelievers more astray than the animals? ——> Because the animals praise Allaah, whereas the disbelievers do not praise Allaah. The animal doesn’t commit polytheism. As for the disbeliever, he associates partners unto Allaah. For this reason, the disbeliever is more astray than the animal.

So the individual who is intelligent and has an intelligent mind will know why he is created and will work to fulfill that purpose. So whoever is intelligent, he will be successful.

Who is the intelligent?

Why is the intellect named in the Arabic language as ‘Aql?

The ‘Aql is derived from the root word of a rope that is tied.

So when one wants to captivate an animal, you tie it so it doesn’t run away. Because if the animal runs away, it doesn’t know where to find its own benefit, because it could do good or bad. But when you tie the animal, you make the animal only do good. You only use the animal for what is beneficial. So the human being has a brain, and the animal has a brain. But your brain knows what will benefit you and what will harm you. Hence, you do what will benefit you, and abstain from what will harm you.

So the one who ties himself down to do good and imprisons himself away from the prohibitions, he is the one who is ‘aaqil (has intellect). In the Arabic language, the intellect is also called a Hijr. It is a barrier that stands between an individual and evil.

Hence, we see that the person of true intellect is the one who deprives himself from what Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic, prohibited. So the true intellectual who does good and leaves evil, he is the one who is Sa’eed (successful, happy).

So this is the definition of having a true, insightful intellect, the intellect which orders you with good and prohibits you from evil.

It is not intended by intellect that a person knows the details of mathematics or he has knowledge of wordly matters that the believers and disbelievers share in. The intent of ‘aql (intellect) is the benfecial intellect which would help you stay away from entering the Hellfire.

What benefit would it serve a person if had knowledge of business or manufacturing or physics or chemistry, but he worships a cow or a stone or the dead – instead of worshipping Allaah, The Ever-Living Who does not die?

For this reason, Allaah said in the Qur`an regarding the disbelievers and hypocrites that they don’t have knowledge nor do they have the ability to analyze something intellectually.

Even the disobedient Muslim – a Muslim who commits disobedience – needs to rush to repent from his disobedience. Allaah says:

Allaah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allaah will forgive and Allaah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise. (An-Nisa`, ayah 17) Even the Muslim – when he disobeys Allaah – he is in a state of ignorance when he is disobeying Allaah. And when he does so, his intellect weakens. So when they commit these acts of disobedience, they do not think of these repercussions of these sins…

Shaking The Hand Of The Non-Muslim Woman Who Comes Seeking Da’Wah – Shaykh Muqbil ibn Haadee

Shaking The Hand Of The Non-Muslim Woman Who Comes Seeking Da’Wah
Shaykh Muqbil ibn Haadee (rahimahullaah)

[Click here to Watch Video with English Subtitles]

Question:

Is it permissible to shake the hand of the strange woman who comes for the purpose of accepting Islam; and if one does not shake her hand, then this may have the opposite effect, and she may think that she is (being) belittled; so what does the Muslim do in this situation?

Answer:

It is not permissible to shake her hand due to what At-Tirmidhee narrates in his Jaami’ on the authority of UmaymahbintRuqayqah; she said: Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ said:

“I do not shake hands with women.”

Likewise, due to that which Al-Bukhaaree narrated in his Saheeh on the authority of Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, who said about Allaah’s Messengerﷺ: “By Allaah, his hand never touched the hand of a woman.”

At-Tabaraanee narrated in his Mu’jam from Ma’qil ibn Yassaar, may Allaah be pleased with him, who said: Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ said:

“For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than to touch a woman who is not permissible for him.”

What is understood is that this is not from the perspective of belittlement. However, it is a religious matter. Moreover, along with handshaking comes looking and speaking. So it is a must that things be predicated upon a proper foundation. I have mentioned the Hadeeth of Umaymah bint Ruqayqah; in it a woman said: “Will you not shake our hands O Messenger of Allaah, as you shake the hands of the men?” So he said:

“I do not shake the hands with women. My statement to one hundred women is like my statement to one woman.”

And the Prophet ﷺ would recite to them the verse which comes at the end of Soorah Al-Mumtahinah and then he would say to them:

“Are you upon this?”

And they would say: “Yes.”

Using Comedy for Dawah – Explained by Shaykh Fawzan

Using comedy for Dawah
Explained by Shaykh Fawzan (hafidhahullaah)

[Click Here to watch the Video]

Question:

May Allah give you good, the questioner says: Is it from the means of Dawah to utilize comedy and making people laugh in order to capture their hearts towards the religion? What is the correct method? May Allah reward you with good.

Shaykh Fawzan:

Dawah is not by way of jokes, clowning and humor. Dawah is by the Book and the Sunnah and preaching, it is not by humor or making the people laugh or things like this. This is not from kindness. Perhaps someone will say this is from kindness. Kindness is not joking that leads to comedy. This is from the things that trivialize the status of the caller. If they see him jesting, clowning and so forth, he will diminish in their view. He will become like a comedian, he will not be a caller to Allah. He will become like an actor. These things trivialize the significance of the call and the status of the caller. The person should give Dawah in a serious manner, on the way of the Book and the Sunnah. And it does not appear in the Book and the Sunnah that comedy and joking is from Dawah to Allah the Exalted. Allah said to His Prophet:

{125} ادْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ

Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.  (Soorah An Nahl 16:125)

With wisdom, means with knowledge; and putting the affairs in their proper places. You speak to the ignorant person with that which he will understand; you speak to the learned person with that which he will understand. You address the leader in a manner which is befitting. Every person is address in a manner which is suited for them. This is from wisdom.

Also wisdom is knowledge, thus do not give Dawah while you are ignorant.

And beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. Comedy is not included in this. Joking has not come as a means of Dawah. This trivializes the significance of the Dawah and this diminishes the status of the caller; and he will become cheap in the eyes of the people, because he is shameless, and distasteful. Thus we do not invent things in the Dawah that are not from its methodology.

The Ruling on Plays and Skits
Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan

Question:

What is your view on putting on skits in the Masaajid when that is for the purpose of Da’wah?

Answer:

This is something newly invented; it is not from the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ in the Masaajid or other than them, it is not permissible. The Messenger ﷺ or the Muslims after him did not use skits or plays in the Masaajid.

Al-Fawzān: If you know and are sure about the deviation of a group and are able to, you must warn…

October 12, 2012 1 comment

Al-Fawzān: If you know and are sure about the deviation of a group and are able to, you must warn……even if there is a scholar who praises the group.

The following question was posed to Shaykh Sālih b. Fawzān Al-Fawzān – may Allāh preserve and protect him (“Sahab Salafi Network” 2012):

I intend to write about some deviated groups and warn against them. However, these groups have not left the fold of Islām, and some scholars have praised them, and I fear that [such scholars] might call against me. What is your advice and guidance for me, knowing that this group is deviated?

The Shaykh replied:

Your duty (wājib) is to clarify the truth; your duty is to clarify the truth. If you are sure about their errors and their deviation, you are one hundred percent sure, and you have the ability and the knowledge to explain, then it is a duty upon you to do this.

And when Allāh took the covenant from those who were given the scripture that you must explain it to people and not hide it…  (Translation of the meaning of Āl-‘Imrān: 187)

Verily those who hide the clear guidance that We have revealed…
(Translation of the meaning of Al-Baqarah: 159, 174)

It is not allowed to hide knowledge. If you know and are sure about the deviation of some groups or sects, then clarify them and explain them for the people, so that they may be on guard against them. This is part of nasīhah (sincere concern for others; advice). The Messenger – Allāh’s praise and peace be upon him – said:

The religion is nasīhah (sincerity). We asked: “to whom?” He replied, “to Allāh, and to His Book, and to His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their masses. (Sahīh Muslim, hadīth #55)

[In doing so,] do not fear the people. You must fear Allāh – the exalted and perfect – and explain the truth and refute falsehood, and not fear people, yes.

Narrate to people what they can understand – call them in stages – (wisdom in da’wah) Shaykh Uthaymeen

‘Alî b. Abî Tâlib – Allah be pleased with him – said:

Narrate to people what they can understand; do you want Allah and His Messenger to be disbelieved?

Quoted by Al-Bukhârî, Al-Sahîh, Chapter about a person preferring some people with certain knowledge to the exclusion of others.

Ibn Hajr said in Fath Al-Bârî, “[In this narration] there is evidence that ambiguous knowledge should not be mentioned amongst the general public.”

Shaykh Muhammad b. Sâlih Al-‘Uthaymîn – Allah have mercy on him – explained this very important and often misunderstood point beautifully. After mentioning the narration of ‘Alî, he states:

It is therefore an aspect of wisdom in da’wah (calling others to Allah) that you should not surprise people with things they are not able to comprehend. Rather, you should call them in stages, bit by bit until their minds settle…”

He goes on to say:

“[The statement of ‘Alî] ‘Do you want Allah and His Messenger to be disbelieved?’ is a rhetorical question, posed as a criticism of such behavior. It means: by narrating to people things they cannot understand do you want Allah and His Messenger to be disbelieved? This is because in such cases when you say, “Allah said, and His Messenger said” they will say you have lied if their minds cannot comprehend what you are saying. Here, they are not disbelieving Allah and His Messenger, but they are disbelieving you because of this speech that you have attributed to Allah and His Messenger. Thus they will end up disbelieving Allah and His Messenger – not directly – but by way of the one who transmits this knowledge (i.e. you).

Now if it is said: Should we stop telling people things they cannot understand even if they need to know? The answer is: no, we do not leave this knowledge altogether, but we should tell them in a way that they will be able to understand. This is done by telling them stage by stage, bit by bit until they can accept the speech we want them to know and they can feel comfortable with it. We do not abandon knowledge that people cannot understand and just say ‘this is something they will reject or dislike so we will not speak about it.’

The same is the case with acting upon a Sunnah that people are not used to and which they might find objectionable. We should act by this Sunnah, but only after informing people about it, such that they will be able to accept it and feel comfortable about it.

We learn from this narration (of ‘Alî) that it is important to employ wisdom in calling to Allah, and that it is incumbent upon anyone who calls to Allah to consider the level of understanding of those he is inviting, and that he should put everyone in their proper place.

Conditions For The Achievement Of Victory, by Shaikh Muhammad ibn Jameel Zaynoo (rahimahullaah Ta’aala)

Conditions For The Achievement Of Victory,

by Shaikh Muhammad ibn Jameel Zaynoo (rahimahullaah Ta’aala)

Verily, the one who reads the biography and struggle of the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) will see the following stages:

1- The stage of Tawheed: The Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) remained in Makkah for 13 years, calling his people to the Tawheed of Allaah in worship, supplication and legislation – and the fighting of Shirk – until this ‘Aqeedah became firm and established in the souls of his Companions, and they became courageous, not fearful of anyone except Allaah. Hence, it is obligatory for the callers to Islaam (du’aat) to start with Tawheed and to warn against Shirk, so that they may become amongst those who take the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as a model and an example to be followed.

2- The stage of Brotherhood: Verily, the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) migrated from Makkah to Madeenah in order to form a Muslim community based upon mutual love. So the first thing he began with was building a mosque in order to gather the Muslims in it for the worship of their Lord, Who ordained the five daily prayers for them to organize their lives. The Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) promptly embarked upon setting up a brotherhood between the Ansaar (the residents of Madeenah) and the Muhaajiroon who had migrated from Makkah and had left their wealth and property behind. Then the Ansaar offered their wealth and property to the Muhaajiroon, and provided them with every assistance that they needed.

The Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) found that the residents of Madeenah from the Aws and the Khazraj* had previous enmity between themselves. So he made peace between them, and Allaah removed hatred and enmity from their hearts. The Prophet (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) made them brothers in Eeman and Tawheed, loving each other for the sake of Allaah, as has been reported in the hadeeth: A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim…

3- The stage of Preparation: Verily, the Noble Qur`an has ordered us to make preparations for the enemies. So Allaah, The Most High, said:

وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّة

And make ready against them all you can of power… (Al-Anfal, ayah 60)

The Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) explained this verse by saying: Is the power not warfare? [Muslim]

So warfare and the study of all its branches is obligatory upon all the Muslims, depending on their ability. This obligation includes studying the use of guns, tanks, planes and other weapons which are needed for warfare.

Woe to the students of the colleges who study warfare and then take part in competitions and races which are not beneficial for the defense of their religion and their sacred places. However, the youth squander their time playing football, and taking part in competitions, during which they display their bigoted team loyalty, which Islaam has ordered us to abolish. They also neglect their prayers, which Allaah has ordered us to preservere.

4- When we return to the ‘Aqeedah of Tawheed, and we become brothers and sisters – loving each other for the sake of Allaah – and we prepare weapons for the enemies, then if Allaah Wills, the Muslims will achieve victory and the Help of Allaah just as the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and the companions after him achieved victory and the Help of Allaah. Allaah, The Most High, said:

يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ تَنصُرُوا اللَّهَ يَنصُرْكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَكُمْ

Oh you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allaah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm.
(Muhammad, ayah 7)

5- By categorizing these stages, we do not mean that they are separate and distinct, i.e. that the stage of brotherhood cannot be present alongside the stage of Tawheed. Rather, it is possible that these stages can co-exist. Allaah, The Most High, said:

وَكَانَ حَقّاً عَلَيْنَا نَصْرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

…and (as for) the believers, it was incumbent upon Us to help (them). (Ar-Rum, ayah 47)

This noble verse explains that Allaah has promised help for the believers against their enemies, and it is a promise that will not be revoked. Allaah helped His Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in the Battle of Badr, and He helped the Confederates during other battles and expeditions.

He, The Most High, helped the companions of the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) after him against their enemies. He spread Islaam, opened the lands, and aided the Muslims despite the misfortunes and calamities. It was a reward for the believers, those who were truthful to Allaah in their Eeman, their Tawheed, their worship, and their supplication to their Lord in times of hardship and in times of ease.

The Qur`an relates the condition of the believers during the Battle of Badr, when they were few in number and without many weapons, so they called upon their Lord:

إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ أَنِّي مُمِدُّكُمْ بِأَلْف ٍ مِنَ الْمَلاَئِكَةِ مُرْدِفِينَ

(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): “I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in succession.” (Al-Anfal, ayah 9)

Allaah answered their supplication and aided them with angels who fought with them and struck the necks and limbs of the disbelievers, and that is when He, The Most High, said:

فَاضْرِبُوا فَوْقَ الأَعْنَاقِ وَاضْرِبُوا مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ بَنَان

…so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes.” (Al-Anfal, ayah 12)

He, The Most High, brought about help and victory for the believers – the Muwahhiddeen – those who singled Him out for worship. He, The Most High, said:

وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدْر ٍ وَأَنْتُمْ أَذِلَّة ٌ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
And Allaah has already made you victorious at Badr, when you were a weak little force. So fear Allaah much that you may be grateful. (Aali Imran, ayah 123)

One of the supplications of the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in the Battle of Badr was: Oh Allaah, fulfill for me that which You promised me. Oh Allaah, if you destroy this group from the people of Islaam, You will not be worshipped on the earth. [Muslim]

We see the Muslims of today entering into wars against their enemies in most of the lands, but they are not aided and they do not find victory, so what is the reason for that? Has the Promise of Allaah ascribed to the believers failed to come true? No, never! It has not failed, however, where are the believers in order that He may give them the help and victory mentioned in the verses?

We ask the Mujaahideen (those who fight in the Path of Allaah):

1- Have they prepared with Eeman and Tawheed which the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) began his call with in Makkah before the fighting?

2- Have they acquired the means which their Lord ordered them to acquire in His saying:

وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّة

And make ready against them all you can of power… (Al-Anfal, ayah 60)

Verily, the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) explained it as warfare.

3- Did they call upon their Lord and single Him out for supplication at the time of fighting? Or did they associate partners with Him, and then set out to ask help from other than Him, from those whom they believed to have sovereignty, whereas they [those worshipped besides Allaah] were themselves slaves of Allaah, and they were not capable of benefiting or harming anyone. Why do they not follow the example of the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in his supplication to his Lord alone?

أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِكَافٍ عَبْدَه

Is not Allaah Sufficient for His slave?… (Az-Zumar, ayah 36)

4- Also, are they united and loving one another regarding that which is between them, their distinguishing feature being, the saying of their Lord:

وَلاَ تَنَازَعُوا فَتَفْشَلُوا وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ

…Do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart… (Al-Anfal, ayah 46)

5- Finally, why did the Muslims leave their ‘aqeedah and the commandments of their religion, which orders precedence to be given to knowledge and civilization, in opposition to the rest of the nations? So when they return to their religion, their superiority and honor will return to them. When you implement the required Eeman, then He shall give you the promised help and victory.

وَكَانَ حَقّاً عَلَيْنَا نَصْرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

…and (as for) the believers, it was incumbent upon Us to help (them). (Ar-Rum, ayah 47)
