Should the student of knowledge start with memorising the Quran?
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious Most Merciful
BismiLahi Rahmani Rahim
What should the student of knowledge begin with, studying the aqeedah and the tawheed which is part of the Eeman? Or memorising the Quran
As it was reported that it was from the way of the companions and the sunnah to teach the children the tawheed before the Quran and not the contrary as it is widely spread amongst people.
Jundub Ibn Junada may Allah be pleased with him said:
We were with the prophet sala Allahu alayhi wa salam while we were young boys, so we learned faith (eeman) before the Qur’an, then we learned the Quran and our eeman increased.
Reported by Ibn Majah and authentified by Al Albani.
And on the authority of Abd Allah Ibn Umar may Allah be pleased with them, He said:
We lived during an instant of time in which one of us would receive Faith first before receiving the Qur’an and when the verses were revealed we would learn what they permitted and what they prohibited and what they forbade and what they ordered and what should be the stance towards them. But I have seen many men from whom one is given the Qur’an before Faith and he reads it from the opening of the Book to its closing and he does not know what it orders and what it forbids and what should be his stance towards it. He is like someone who is just throwing out dates, i.e.: he does not get any benefit from his recital.
Reported by Al Bayhaqi and Al Haakim who authentified it.
Ibn Al-Qayyim said:
If they reach the time of pronouncing, let them pronounce La Ilah ila Allah Mohammed Rassoul Allah, and that the first thing that knocks their ears, knowing Allah Glory be He, His Tawheed and He (Glory be He) is above His throne, and that He sees them and that He hears their words and that He is with them wherever they are…
Shaykh Muhammed Ibn Abdul Wahab had written a letter named “Teaching the children Tawheed”, he says in his introduction:
This letter is a benefit showing what obligations to teach the children before teaching them the Qur’an. So that the child becomes a complete individual upon the islamic fitrah under tawheed correctly.
As it was asked also:
Do we start learning what is mandatory from the knowledge of the prayer, the fasting and the purification? Or do we start with memorising the Quran?
Ibn Mubarak answered to that:
If you have what is sufficient for you from the Quran to perform your prayer then seek knowledge.
I say because seeking knowledge of the deen is mandatory and memorising the Quran is recommended, so you do not precede the recommended over the mandatory.

A person should not underestimate Shirk (polytheism; associating partners with Allaah in worship) and say: “This is [only] minor Shirk.”
What are examples of Minor Shirk?
For example swearing by other than Allaah. Like swearing by the Prophet, swearing by so-and-so and swearing by the amaanah (trust). He – sallal-Laahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – said:
من حلف بغير الله فقد كفر أو أشرك
“Whoever swears by other than Allaah, has disbelieved or commited Shirk.”
He – ‘alayhi assalaatu was-salaam – said:
لا تحلفوا بآبائكم، من كان حالفا فليحلف بالله أو ليصمت
“Do not swear by your fathers. Whoever wants to swear, let him swear by Allaah or be silent.”
So it is not permissible to swear by other than Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. And this flows on the tongue of many people, making use of habits and blindfollowing. So it is obligatory to repent from this and to beware of it! A person should not swear except by Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. If he wants to swear, then let him swear by Allaah or be silent.
Also, from the types of Minor Shirk, is a small amount of riyaa’ (showing off). Like a person praying while loving that the people praise him [for doing this], or giving charity while loving that the people praise him. He does righteous deeds while loving that the people praise him (for it); this is riyaa’! This nullifies the deed in which it took place. If he performs a deed that has riyaa’ in it, then it is nullified and he receives no reward for it. But it does not nullify the other deeds like Major Shirk does. Rather it only nullifies the deed in which it took place. So the one who shows off his deeds, has associated partners with Allaah – the Mighty and Majestic - in that deed, but it is Minor Shirk. It nullifies his deed and he receives no reward for it.
And when it happens a lot and it becomes a habit in all of his deeds, it becomes Major Shirk, like the riyaa’ of the munaafiqoon (hypocrites). The munaafiqoon are in the lowest depths of the Hellfire because they do good deeds only to be seen (by people). All of their deeds are riyaa’! They do not intend the Face of Allaah with their deeds. They only want the praise of the people for them and to hide behind Islaam while their hearts are disbelieving. This is Major Nifaaq (hypocrisy) and Major Riyaa’.
“Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allaah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salaah (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allaah but little.”
So riyaa’ is of two types. The first type is Major Shirk, and this is the riyaa’ of the munaafiqoon, those who have no Eemaan (faith, belief) in their heart at all. The second type is the riyaa’ of the believers, those who have Eemaan and Tawheed in their hearts. But Shaytaan beautifies for them the love for praise and the love for sum‘ah (performing good deeds [like reciting Qur'aan] in order to be heard). This doesn’t make them exit the religion, but it prevents them from receiving a reward for their deeds in which riyaa’ took place.
So a person should be afraid [of falling into this]! This is why he – sallal-Laahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – said to his Companions:
أخوف ما أخاف عليكم الشرك الأصغر
“That which I fear the most for you is Minor Shirk.”
Then when he was asked about it, he said:
A person stands up, prays and beautifies his prayer, because he sees someone looking at him. The Messenger – sallal-Laahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – feared this for his Companions, so how about other than them? So this is dangerous aswell! One should not have a relaxed attitude towards it.
And from Minor Shirk, is Shirk in statements. Like saying: “Had it not been for Allaah and you, this and that wouldn’t have happened.” This is not permissible. This is Shirk in statements. And if he believes this with his heart, it becomes Major Shirk! But if he didn’t intend it and it only flowed on his tongue, then this is Minor Shirk. And that which is obligatory to say is: “Had it not been for Allaah and then for you…”, “As Allaah wills, and then you will.” Because a man said to the Prophet – sallal-Laahu ‘alayhi wa sallam -: “As Allaah and you will.” Then he (the Prophet) said:
أجعلتني لله ندا؟ قل: ما شاء الله وحده
“Have you set me up as a rival to Allaah? Say: “As Allaah alone wills.””
So it is not permissible for you to gather the Creator and the creation together in any affair with the letter و (and); [for example by saying:] “As Allaah wills and you will,” “Had it not been for Allaah and you…” Rather you should use ثم (then): “As Allaah wills, and then you will,” “Had it not been for Allaah, and then for you…” Because ثم (then) is used for tarteeb (order) and ta‘qeeb (sequence). As for و (and) then it is used to gather (two or more affairs) unrestrictedly, it does not imply tarteeb or ta‘qeeb. This is why you shouldn’t use the و (and). And this is what ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas – may Allaah be pleased with both of them – explained the Statement of Allaah – the Most High – with:
فَلاَ تَجْعَلُواْ لِلَّهِ أَندَاداً وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
“Then do not set up rivals unto Allaah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).”
He (‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas) said that this refers to someone saying: “Had it not been for Allaah and you…” “Had it not been for the dogs, then the thieves would have come to us.” “Had it not been for the duck in the house, the thieves would have come to us.” Ascribing affairs to other than Allaah, this is Minor Shirk. And it is obligatory for you to beware of this.

This person says: What is the ruling on saying: “Mommy” or “Daddy” when frightened?
If he is scared; such as a toddler or child or the likes, then this is from Istighaathah (seeking aid) with one who is alive, near, and able to help; there is no harm in this.
As for in times of calamity, calling out to them; then this is not permissible if they are absent, or dead. This is Shirk.

Shirk is you making a rival for the Deity (i.e., Allaah)
Whereas none shared with Allaah in creating you;
You supplicating to him, hoping in him, fearing him, intending him
In repelling evil and from him you seek good;
Similar to those of old, supplicating to the dead calling out to them;
Hoping for their help after they have been buried;
This is Shirk.
إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ هَذِهِ الأَفْعَالُ يَا عُلَمَاء ** شِرْكًا فَمَا الشِّرْكُ قولوا لي أَوِ ابْتَعِدُوا
If these actions, O scholars, are not Shirk;
Then what is Shirk; tell me or get away from me!

Leaving An Act Of Worship Due To Fear Of The People Criticizing Or Mocking Him – al-‘Allaamah ‘Ubayd bin ‘Abdillaah al-Jaabiree
Is leaving an act of worship because of the people Shirk?
Answered by al-‘Allaamah ‘Ubayd bin ‘Abdillaah al-Jaabiree
Is leaving an act of worship because of the people Shirk (polytheism)? Like du‘aa (supplication) for example?
Shaykh ‘Ubayd bin ‘Abdillaah al-Jaabiree:
This is from the kinds of forbidden khawf (fear). So if you enter into an act of worship, then do not cut it off! The Scholars say that this is from Minor Shirk. i.e. leaving an act of worship due to fear of the people criticizing or mocking him; the Scholars say that this is from Minor Shirk. So if you enter into an act of worship, then complete it.
But you may delay it a little, for example when visitors visit you and you want to perform two rak‘ahs (prayer units) of Duhaa, then receive them and prepare for them that which is prepared for guests, then you pray Duhaa in the place where they are or in another place – no problem. Na‘am.
Likewise, if you leave your voluntary acts of worship (nawaafil) due to being busy with your guests, and not due to fear of them, then there is no problem in this. And with this, it can be said that leaving an act of worship… And what is intented here is the naafilah (voluntary act), like the two rak‘ahs of Duhaa or the recitation of the Qur’aan – you have a specific amount that you recite -. So leaving it has two situations:
One of them: that he leaves it due to fear of the people, meaning: he fears their criticism, mockery and their harm. This is not permissible! This is forbidden, as we have preceded.
The second: that he leaves it so that he is able to receive them (i.e. the guests) and to prepare for them that which is prepared for visitors, then he continues after that (with his act of worship), even if he delays it until the guests leave – there is no problem in this inshaa-al-Laah. Because some acts of worship do not have a fixed time (to perform them), like the recitation of the Qur’aan. But the two rak‘ahs of Duhaa can be missed (since they have a fixed time), so if you don’t like to leave them off, then you prepare for your visitors that which is prepared for guests at the moment they enter (your house), then you pray the two rak‘ahs of Duhaa. Na‘am. So there is no problem in this inshaa-al-Laah. Even if you left it, but [only] due to being busy with the guests and not due to fear of them, then there is no problem in this inshaa-al-Laah.

AT-TAWWASUL AND IT’S TYPES
By: Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan
The questioner asks O shaykh regarding at-tawassul ( a means of seeking nearness to Allaah with certain actions), it’s types and that is with the supplication of the righteous.
At-tawassul is of two types; the type that is legislated (allowed) and the type that is forbidden.
The tawassul which is legislated is
- tawassul to Allaah by (using) His Names and Qualities or
- tawassul by way of righteous actions or
- tawassul in requesting supplication from a living person (who) is present, that he supplicates for you regarding your affairs; All this is permissible.
The tawassul which is forbidden is
- the tawassul done by the honor the creation, or by his right or by his personality or his uprightness.
This is the tawaasul which is forbidden. If the one who does so directs anything from worship to the one the tawaasul is made towards, then this is major shirk, just as that which the people of jaahiliyah were upon ( Allaah says) “they worship other than Allaah things that will not harm nor benefit them, they say these are our intercessors with Allaah” (10:18) (also) Just as most of the grave worshippers are upon; those who seek nearness (to Allaah) by way of the deceased with different forms of worship and they say “these will intercede for us with Allaah” and this is major shirk!

The importance of the Tawheed and the Sunnah – Sh. Muhammad bin Ramzaan al-Haajiree & Sh. Muhammad bin Haadee al-Madkhalee
The importance of the Tawheed and the Sunnah
Sh. Muhammad bin Ramzaan al-Haajiree & Sh. Muhammad bin Haadee al-Madkhalee
Shaykh Muhammad bin Ramzaan al-Haajiree:
All praise is due to Allaah. May the Salaat and the Salaam be upon the Messenger of Allaah, his family, his Companions and those who aid him. To proceed:
All praise is due to Allaah for blessing us with this good meeting with our brothers in Holland, to study the importance of holding fast to the Book [of Allaah] and the Sunnah. They (the Book and the Sunnah) are the means of salvation. The Prophet – salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam - said:
“I have left with you that which when you hold fast to it, you will never go astray after me; the Book of Allaah and my Sunnah.” [Saheeh al-Jaami‘ #2937]
The greatest affair which Allaah has commanded is His Tawheed (His Oneness in His Lordship, in His Right to be worshipped and in His Names and Attributes). And the greatest affair which Allaah has prohibited is Shirk (polytheism, setting up partners with Allaah in worship). So every da‘wah (call, invitation) which doesn’t give any importance to Tawheed and doesn’t give any importance to warning against Shirk, is a da‘wah which opposes the guidance of the Prophet – salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam -. This is how Ahlul-Bida‘ (the people of innovations) are; they do not give any importance to calling to Tawheed, warning against Shirk, adhering to the Sunnah and being on guard against the innovations. Be steadfast and you will be given tawfeeq (success). Be steadfast upon this and you will be given tawfeeq.
Al-Ikhwaan al-Muslimoon (the Muslim Brotherhood) and at-Tableegh do not give any importance to Tawheed. And their heads (leaders) invite to Shirk; Hasan al-Banna (founder of al-Ikhwaan al-Muslimoon) was devoted to the grave of Sinjer and Muhammad Ilyaas (founder of Jamaa‘atu t-Tableegh) was devoted to the grave of Rasheed Gangohi. These are the heads of two calls that claim that they are a call to Islaam, while their heads are upon the da‘wah to Shirk! So what good is there in this? This is their asl (foundation)! Whereas as-Salafiyyah, since its beginning, calls to ‘Laa ilaaha illa-Laah‘ (no deity has the right to be worshipped except Allaah) and warns against Shirk.
This was a brief speech. And our Shaykh and teacher, Shaykh Muhammad bin Haadee al-Madkhalee will complete the advice for you. You will hear him now, I am in his presence now.
Shaykh Muhammad bin Haadee al-Madkhalee:
Assalaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatul-Laahi wa barakaatuh. Ahlan wa Sahlan wa Marhaban bikum. Hayyaakum Allaah.
I don’t have any addition to what my brother, the noble Shaykh Muhammad bin Ramzaan al-Haajiree – may Allaah reward him with good – has mentioned. In fact, I unite my word with his word and I advise you with the same he advised you with. And I say:
Verily, at-Tawheed, which is the Right of Allaah upon the servants, as has been narrated in the hadeeth of Mu‘aadh bin Jabal – may Allaah be pleased with him -, and in which lies the salvation with Allaah – the Mighty and Majestic -, because of his statement – ‘alayhi assalaatu wassalaam -:
“Whoever dies while he doesn’t set up partners with Allaah in worship, will enter Paradise. And whoever dies while he sets up partners with Allaah in worship, will enter the Fire.” [Saheeh Muslim #93]
If the situation is like this, then it is obligatory upon every intelligent person, who is eager to save himself, to give importance to this affair, based upon this hadeeth which you have heard. And he should know that the one who opposes him or slanders those who walks upon this path; he should know that there is no khayr (good) in him, even if some people try to defend him or hide his true nature.
So I say: if the Prophet – salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam - stayed in Makkah thirteen years while he was calling to Tawheed... He did not call to something else. The legislations were not sent down to him except in al-Madeenah, with the exception of the prayer, because it was made obligatory upon him in Makkah, shortly before the Hijrah (to al-Madeenah). As for the rest of the legislations, then they were made obligatory in al-Madeenah. For thirteen years he – salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam - was calling to Tawheed.
The one who comes and sees that they (the people) are drowned in Major Shirk or Minor Shirk, and then he closes his eyes and goes treating that which is less than [Shirk], like listening to songs, smoking or abandoning the prayer, while he leaves the affair of Tawheed; this one has not understood Islaam, even if he claims whatever he claims. Verily, the proofs reject him and refute him.
The truthful Muslim, the Sunnee, the Atharee, is the one who follows the Messenger of Allaah – salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam -. The righteous and correct deeds do not become manifest except when the correct Tawheed has settled in the hearts of the people. Based upon this, it is obligatory upon our brothers in the West, who call to Allaah, to strive to insert Tawheed into the hearts of the people in a correct and powerful manner, and to review and repeat it, and to give them actual examples so that the Tawheed becomes established in their hearts. Then, when the correct Tawheed is established in their hearts, we look to the remaining affairs which should be treated. For verily, when al-Eemaan (faith, belief) enters the hearts correctly, then the deeds will confirm it.
I ask Allaah – the Mighty and Majestic – to aid you upon this.
Do not be fooled by the false da‘awaat (calls, propagandas) which treat the nails while there is evil in the hearts and while the destruction comes from there. For verily, the treatment of the nails while there is an opening or cancer in the heart indicates that the treating person is not a doctor.
May Allaah give us and you success to that which He loves and is pleased with. And may Allaah raise the rank of His servant and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and grant him peace.
Shaykh Muhammad bin Ramzaan al-Haajiree:
That which indicates this, is that we see the agitation of the people for that which takes place from the affairs of the dunyaa. I say: these people who have gathered in Tunisia or Egypt, if we would say to them, “Come on, let’s forbid Shirk,” would they have gathered like this? [Or if we would say to them,] “Come on, let us destroy and remove the domes so that al-Badawee is not worshipped [unclear] and so that the tomb of al-Husayn and these manifestations of disbelief are destroyed.” Would these people also gather as people who are truthful to Allaah, to remove all the manifestations of Shirk and to let Tawheed return? The answer is: we are watching and it is known; you won’t find [them gathering] except a few.
May Allaah give everyone success to beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, and with this I end [my speech] and I excuse myself because I am in the presence of our Shaykh (Muhammad bin Haadee). Wasssalaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatul-Laahi wa barakaatuh. And may Allaah raise the rank of Muhammad and grant him peace.

Are the Sufi Grave-Worshippers who Build Places of Worship over Graves The Worst of Creation in the Sight of Allaah?
Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, Chapter: “Building A Mosque Over A Grave”
‘Aaisha (radhi Allaahu ‘anhaa) said:
When the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wassallam) became ill, some of his wives mentioned a church they had seen in Ethiopia called Maariyah. Both Umm Salamah and Umm Habeebah had been to Ethiopia. They spoke about the beauty of the church and the images inside it. The Messenger (salallaahu ‘alaihi wassallam) raised his head and said:
“When a pious man would die from amongst those people, they would build a place of worship over his grave, then they would make those images in it. They are the worst of creation in the site of Allaah. (No. 1341).
The Sufis are renowned worldwide for building structure, domes, courtyards and mosques over graves. They gather there and carry out acts of worship in and around these structures, just as the Prophet mentioned in the above narration. These are acts of polytheism rejected by Islaam, condemned by Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu ‘alaihi wassallam).
One of the callers of Jamā’at ut-Tablīgh says,
“We have caused the people to be lost in the name of Tawhīd and have encouraged them upon sinning. And this is due to the statement that the Muwahhid (person of Tawhīd) will enter Paradise regardless of his sins other than Shirk. Tawhīd, Tawhīd and Tawhīd. So how will we respond to Allāh عز وجل regarding the existence of these sinners?”
So the question is, what is your Excellency’s opinion regarding this statement.
Shaykh Sālih bin Fawzān bin ‘Abdullāh al-Fawzān:
This is the statement of an ignoramus or a misguided one. Either he is an ignoramus and does not know the speech regarding the issues of knowledge, or he knows yet is misguided and desires misguidance of the people.
So there is no doubt that Shirk is the greatest of the sins and that its committer will not enter Paradise, period. And as for the committer of sins, even if they be major and not Shirk, then forgiveness and entrance to Paradise will return to him. And this is something which is not from us.
Allāh جل وعلا says, “Verily, Allāh forgives not that partners should be set up with Him in worship, but He forgives that (anything else) to whom He pleases” (An-Nisā’ 4: 48).
And in the Hadīth [the Messenger ﷺ said, that Allāh will say,] “Remove from the Fire whosoever has in his heart īmān equivalent to the weight of mustard seed” [Narrated by Abī Sa'īd and reported by Bukhārī & others].
So Tawhīd guarantees for its possessor Paradise, either in the beginning or in the end, even if he is punished (in Hell). As for the Mushrik then there is no security for him ever.
“It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allāh and worship none but Him alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allāh)… “ (Al-An’ām: 6: 82) meaning by Shirk. “…for them (only) there is security and they are the guided” (Al-An’ām: 6: 82).
So the people of Tawhīd have security, those who do not cover their īmān with Zulm meaning Shirk have security, either completely or in the end. As for the Mushrik then he has no security, period. And he is eternally in the Fire.
So this one who says that Tawhīd caused the people to be lost, then this – and Allāh’s Refuge is sought – is atrocious speech. This is atrocious speech, false speech. Tawhīd is what rectified the people and it is what will save the people on the Day of Resurrection from the Fire. So, it (Tawhīd) is the basis, and it is the foundation. And there is no comparison between the (ordinary) sin and Shirk. Shirk is the greatest of sins, and there is no salvation alongside of it. As for the sins then they are under the will (of Allāh). If Allāh Wills He can punish their committer and if He Wills He can forgive him. And if he is punished then his final outcome will (eventually) be Paradise. Na’am.
