[Q]: What are the benefits that a Muslim will obtain if he constantly makes wuhdoo after everything that breaks it?
[A]: Shaykh al-‘Uthaymeen [d. 1421 AH], may Allah have mercy on him, answered:
The benefits that a Muslim obtains if he constantly makes wuhdoo after everything that breaks it are that he remains in a state of ritual purity, and remaining in a state of ritual purity is a righteous action.
Also, he may be a person who constantly remembers Allah in all situations, so when he remembers Allah, he will be in a state of ritual purity.
Likewise, he may need to pray, and the place he is in may not have any easily accessible water to make wudhoo with. So, in that situation, he will already be ready for prayer.
What’s important is that when a person remains in a state of ritual purity, there are many benefits. (1)

Bismillahi wal Hamdullillah Was Salaatu Was Salaamu ‘Alaa Rasoolillah
I was asked about this issue earlier today thus i share this benefit. Concerning this issue the scholars have a number of statements. Their statements revolve firstly around the fact that the Messenger Sallallahu alaihi was salam used to make Wudhu while in a state of Janaaba.
Upon the authority of Abu Salamah who said: “I asked Aaisha -Radhiyallahu anhaa Did the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi was Salam sleep while Junub? She said: “Yes! and he would make Wudhu“ (Collected by Bukhaari (282))
Upon the authority of Aaisha – Radhiyallahu anhaa “The Messenger of Allah – Sallallahu alaihi Was Salam when he was in a state of ritual impurity, and he intended to eat or sleep then he would make wudhu like his wudhu for salaah“ (Collected by Muslim (305))
As far as this wudhu is concerned, the scholars hold that it is done for the purpose of ‘Lightening’ the Janaaba (state of ritual impurity) of the person who is Junub
After mentioning some of the ahaadeeth that indicate the issue, Al Haafidh Ibn Rajab mentions in his ‘Fathul Baari’ (not that of Al Haafidh Ibn Hajr) (1/358):
“The ahaadeeth mentioned in the chapter, indicate that the wudhu of the person who is junub (in a state of ritual impurity) ‘lightens’ his state of janabah“
That is there is nothing that prevents him from being completely pure, except him making ghusl, and what is correct is that the woman is the same as the man in that regard.
With that being the case, the question that arises is, is the menstruating woman the same as the man or woman in a state of Janaabah?
What is correct is that she isn’t, due to the fact that she has a continual flow of blood that she would not become pure from even if she made ghusl.
Thus her having a ghusl would not put her in a state of tahaarah, while the man or woman in a state of janaabah IS purified with Ghusl and similarly, if they make wudhu their state is lightened.
With the exception of one woman, and that is the woman whos’ menses has ended but she has not yet made ghusl to purify herself, this woman is benefitted by wudhu if she intends to sleep in that state.
Al Haafidh ibn Hajr mentions the statement of Ibn Daqeeq al eid -Rahimahullah who said
“Ash Shaafi’ee has stated that this is not for the menstruating woman (i.e. to make wudhu before sleep), because if she were to make ghusl it would not remove her state of impurity, while that is not the case with one who is junub, but if her flow of blood ceases, then that is permissable for her“

Imaamun Nawwawi has a similar statement in his explanation of Muslim he states (3/218):
“Our companions (i.e. the scholars of the Shaafi’ee madhab) are united upon the fact that it is not desirable for the the woman in a state of menses or post-natal bleeding to make wudhu (i.e. before sleep) because wudhu will have no effect upon her state of impurity, but if her menses ends then she becomes like the one who is Junub, Wallahu a’lam“
What is the word siwak?
The word Siwak describes both the action and name of stick used for cleaning ones teeth. The stick (siwak) is legislated by of our Prophet(sallahu alahi wasalaam) , it is a preferred sunna, that means if one does it he is rewarded and if he leaves it off there is no sin in doing so. The stick must be moistened and it must be keep that way to extract its benefits. It must be kept moist to continue benefiting from it. The stick has many forms and sources. The most valuable is the (udd of Iraq) which contains the most moisture and cleansing properties.
The reasons behind siwak , it has cleaning properties and it is a recommended sunna of our beloved Prophet(sallahu alahi wa salaam).Use of the siwak is repeatedly encouraged, as in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who reported that the Prophet said: “Were it not for the fact that I did not want to make things too hard for my Ummah (nation), I would have commanded them to use the siwak at every time of prayer.” (al-Bukhari and Muslim). According to another report narrated by al-Bukhari, he said: “…at every time of making wudoo’.”
Times when Siwak is recommanded are when getting up from sleep, when the smell of ones mouth changed, when entering one’s home, when going to mosque and when reading Quran. The religion of Islam is a religion of purity, a religion in which the one who is upon it seeks the pleasure of his Lord.

Increase of Provision through Forgiveness

A) Hasan al Basri -Rahimullaah- mentioned:
‘That a man complained to him concerning drought so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah, another complained about another matter so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah, another complained about lack of rain for his land so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah another complained of no offspring so it was said seek forgiveness from Allaah, then he (Hasan al Basri) recited.
ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارٗا ١٠ يُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّدۡرَارٗا ١١ وَيُمۡدِدۡكُم بِأَمۡوَٰلٖ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجۡعَل
لَّكُمۡ جَنَّٰتٖ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ أَنۡهَٰرٗا ١٢
<<Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers
And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers. >> [Nuh: 10-12]

B) al-Hafidh Emaad ad-Deen Isma’eel Ibn Katheer (d. 774 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said in his Tafseer about the previous Ayaat:
‘If you repented to Allaah and sought forgiveness from Him and showed obedience to Him your Rizq (provision) would increase and rain would fall from the blessings of the skies, and the blessings of the earth would spring forth, crops would grow for you. You will be given abundant livestock. You will be aided with wealth and offspring; meaning that offspring and wealth would be given to you. And you will be given gardens that have numerous types of fruits and through out there will be rivers that flow in these gardens. This is the way of giving Dawa’ by encouragement.’

C) It is narrated from Abi Saeed Al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:
‘Whoever performs Wudu and then says:
‘ Subhanaka Allahuma wabihamdika la ilaha ila anta astaghfiruka wa atooboo ilaika’
(‘Far are You O Allaah from imperfection, and You have all praise, there is none worthy of worship in truth except You, I seek forgiveness from You and I repent to You),
then this reward is written in a parchment and it is stamped with a seal and no falsehood can break it until the day of Judgment.’

Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan said:
The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: If it wasn’t for the fact that I do not want to cause hardship on my nation, I would have ordered that the siwaak be used for every wuḍoo. [Bukhaaree]
: Moisturizing One’s Hair: It is recommended to moisturize one’s hair every other day, just as the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would do. (3)
: Looking at One’s Self in the Mirror: It is recommended to look at one’s self in the mirror when he finishes cleaning and beautifying himself. One looks in the mirror because there is a possibility that something needs to be adjusted or tweaked. Thus, one looks in the mirror before going out to meet people. This is the Sunnah. The Messenger of Allah (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to look in the mirror (4).
: Using Delightful Fragrances (5): This is done because all of the Prophets did so. It is also done so that a person’s scent is pleasant, not offensive. So, he applies fragrances when he generally goes to prayer, and specifically when he goes to Friday prayer (al-Jumu’ah). He also uses delightful fragrances in the circles of remembrance and when he goes to gatherings.
: Shaving the Pubic Area: It is recommended to remove the hair from one’s pubic area. This can be done by any means that serves the purpose. This is also from the ways of the Prophets.
: Trimming the Mustache Closely: So, one does not let his mustache grow long. Likewise, he does not shave it completely because that is considered a form of disfigurement. He leaves its origin. This is because the Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) did not command us to shave it completely; rather, he ordered us to trim it closely (6). This is a form of beautification for men.
: Trimming One’s Nails: From the way of the Prophet is to trim one’s fingernails and toenails, they are not to be left long. Leaving them long is considered ugliness and a resemblance to predatory animals.
: Removing One’s Underarm Hair: One also removes the hair from his underarms by any means that serve the purpose. This is because leaving hair to grow under the arms is ugly, and it causes an unpleasant odor.

The Siwaak is pleasing to the Lord

The Siwaak which is sometimes called the ‘Miswak’ is a cleaning tool taken from the Arak tree. The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) used to stress its use for numerous benefits, some of which are mentioned below. The Siwaak is used as a natural medical tool to clean the teeth, remove plaque and bacteria. It also strengthens the gums.
The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said, “The siwaak is a purification for the mouth and pleasing to the Lord.” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree, Saheeh Al-Jaami' (3696) Sheikh Albaani rahimahullaah said it is saheeh].
The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said, “If it wasn’t to cause difficulty to my nation I would have ordered them to use the Siwaak for every ablution.” [Saheeh Al-Jaami' (5319) Sheikh Albaani rahimahullaah said it is saheeh].
The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said that the Siwaak is from the fitrah (natural state) [Saheeh Al-Jaami' (4009) Sheikh Albaani rahimahullaah said it is hasan].
The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) never used to sleep except that the Siwaak was by his head and when he (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) woke up he began with the Siwaak. [See Saheehah (2111) and Saheeh Al-Jaami' (4872) Sheikh Albaani rahimahullaah said it is hasan].
Hudayfah ibnul Yamaan t said, “The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) used to purify his mouth with the Siwaak when waking up for Tahajjud (night prayer).” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim].
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “When the Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) would enter the house he would begin with the Siwaak.” [Saheeh Muslim].
The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said, “Purify your mouth with the siwaak because it is the path where the Qur’an emanates from.” [Saheeh ibn Maajah].
Narrated Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that from the favours of Allah that He bestowed upon me was that the Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) died in my house on the day of my turn while he was leaning on my chest. Allah made my saliva mix with his at his death. When Abdulrahman (my brother) entered upon me with a Siwaak in his hand and I was supporting (the back of) Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) on my chest. I saw the Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) looking at it(i.e the Siwaak) and I knew He (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) loved the Siwaak, so I said to him, “Shall I take it for you?” He (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) nodded in agreement. So I took it and it was too stiff for him to use, so I said to him, “shall I soften it for you?” He (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) nodded showing his approval. So I softened it and cleaned his teeth with it. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4449)].
Sheikh Saalih Al-Fawzan says regarding the hadeeth, “If It wasn’t for causing difficulty to my nation, I would have ordered them with the Siwaak” He said:
This hadeeth shows that the Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) was merciful to his nation. He (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) didn’t want any difficulty for them. Rather, He (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) wanted ease for them and He (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) would do actions (of worship) and not order others with them for fear that it would be difficult for them but sufficed with just encouraging them with it.
Siwaak is to use the tooth stick in the mouth to remove the smell and what may be left of food because the mouth could have bad breath due to the food getting stuck in the mouth. Also, it is used to remove smells emanating from the stomach rising to the mouth. Islam is a religion of cleanliness.
The explainer of “Subul sallam” said number of hadeeth on the Siwaak has reached about 100.
Using the Siwaak is from the traits of the Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) and it is from the fitrah (natural state) of a person. It is a stressed Sunnah and it is used in all times but especially for five occasions:
1. While doing wudu (ablution).
2. While beginning to pray.
3. When waking up from sleep
4. The Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) would use the Siwaak when reading the Qur’an due to it being the speech of Allah and due to the presence of the angels.
5. When the person senses the change of smell in their mouth.
It is preferable to use the Siwaak all the time even for the fasting person and for the one who is not fasting.
The best type of Siwaak comes from the Arak tree because it is soft and has a good smell.
It is preferable to use the Siwaak to remove bad smells when going to the mosque. This is why the Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) ordered that a person should not eat garlic while going to the mosque.

Q: Someone from Al-Sharqiyyah governorate, the Arab Republic of Egypt, asks: If a man touches his private parts or the private parts of one of his children, or if the mother touches the private parts of one of her children, must they renew their Wudu’ (ablution)?
A: Yes, if a man touches the private parts without a barrier; namely, the skin of the hand touches the skin of the private part, penis or anus, his ablution will be nullified. Similarly, if a woman touches her private parts or the private parts of her children, her ablution will be nullified.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: He who touches his penis should perform ablution. He (peace be upon him) also stated: He who touches his private parts without a barrier should perform ablution.
Therefore, if someone touches their private parts without a barrier, their ablution will be nullified. But if they do this over a barrier of clothing, loincloth or pants, there is nothing wrong with this and their Wudu’ remains valid. What invalidates Wudu’ is the bare hand touching the skin of the private parts without a barrier between them.

Abu Hurayrah (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhu) said: Rasoolullaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said:
«If one of you touches his penis and there is no veil between him and it nor any cover, then wudhoo has become obligatory for him.» [al-Haakim (1/138) and others]. (al-Albaanee says: hadeeth Saheeh.)
The Sheikh, Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen -rahimahullah- while mentioning the dangers of speaking without knowledge, said:
There are many examples to illustrate (the dangers of) giving religious verdicts (fatwa) without knowledge. From them:
The verdict that a sick person, if his clothes become defiled and he is not able to clean them, he is informed that prayer is not obligatory upon him until he cleans his clothing.
This verdict is a lie, a mistake and incorrect. The sick individual prays, even if his clothes contain defilements. In fact, even if impurities are on his body, and he is not able to clean them (he continues to perform prayer). As Allah says in the Quran (meaning):
“Fear Allah to the best of your ability.” [Surah at-Tagabun 64:16]
Because of this mistaken, incorrect verdict, some Muslims die without praying. If only they knew that the sick person prays in any state he may be in (according to one’s ability), they would have died while still performing prayer.
