Regarding the meat of Ahl-ul-Kitaab in the West – Shaykh ‘Abdullaah al-Bukhaaree

Regarding the meat of Ahl-ul-Kitaab in the West
Shaykh ‘Abdullaah bin ‘Abdir-Raheem al-Bukhaaree

Questioner:

Regarding the issue of the meat here (in France): searching for Halaal (lawful) meat was the thing that was widespread here between the Muslims. So they (some du’aat in France) found some fataawaa (religious verdicts) of Shaykh ibn Baaz and Shaykh al-’Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon all of them, wherein they said that the person should not search, rather the original ruling is that they are Ahl-ul-Kitaab (People of the Scripture, i.e. Jews and Christians) and their meat is permissible. So they use these fataawaa and say them to the people in general duroos (lessons) in front of the laymen, and this lead to problems between the people since they were convinced that the meat (of the disbelievers) is not Halaal at all in France. So they (those du’aat) literally said to them: “Go to the French restaurants and eat in them.”

Shaykh ‘Abdullaah al-Bukhaaree:

[They said it] unrestricted, just like that?!

Questioner:

Unrestricted! They even told them the name [of the restaurants]. Some of them said… Is McDonalds known to you?

Shaykh ‘Abdullaah al-Bukhaaree:

Yes, it is known.

Questioner:

They said it like this: “Go to McDonalds and eat in it.” Without restraint or anything…

Shaykh ‘Abdullaah al-Bukhaaree:

I seek refuge with Allaah from betrayal. This is from betrayal! The people are steadfast upon the Command of Allaah searching for Halaal, why do you turn them away [from this]?! This is from the lack of fiqh (understanding) and from recklessness in the understanding – we seek refuge with Allaah. The people are now searching for Halaal, far away from shubhah (doubt), and you come and weaken their determination by saying they shouldn’t search for Halaal and go to it [anymore]. So you made them abandon aiding the truth and adhering to it.

The second thing: the slaughtered meat of Ahl-ul-Kitaab is permissible. Eating it is permissible, not waajib (obligatory)!

The third thing, may Allaah bless you: this is when it is known that he is from Ahl-ul-Kitaab. Not when the Atheïsts, Buddhists, Majoos (fire worshippers), etc. are mixed with them (Ahl-ul-Kitaab). Are you able to determine that the owner of this shop is from Ahl-ul-Kitaab? You aren’t able! The fact that he is in France doesn’t mean [that he is from Ahl-ul-Kitaab]. Right? May Allaah bless you.

So here it is obligatory to be cautious! Cautiousness is obligatory here! When I know that someone is from Ahl-ul-Kitaab and I don’t know how he slaughtered, then there is no problem in eating his meat. If someone asked me: “But if I know that he is from Ahl-ul-Kitaab, and he didn’t slaughter according to the Sharee’ah (Islamic Legislation)?” Then it’s not permissible since he didn’t slaughter it in the first place, this is clear. If it was clearly electrocuted, then it’s not permissible to eat it. This is if it was a Muslim who did it, here in Makkah and al-Madeenah. When it is known that someone did not slaughter according to the Sharee’ah, then it’s not permissible to eat his meat, even if he is a Muslim – not from Ahl-ul-Kitaab. And even if it was next to al-Haram al-Makkee (The Meccan Sanctuary)! Why research things like this, while the people – and all praise is due to Allaah – want to search for their religion and that which makes them steadfast. This one comes and weakens their determination [by saying]: “Go and eat from this and that place.” It is feared that he has some shares in this place (so he invites the people to it)! We ask Allaah for safety.

A Muslim is prohibited to congratulate the disbelievers, Christians, Jews or whomever, on their distinctive occasions

December 31, 2012 2 comments

Fatwa no. 21079

Q: On 12/8/1420 A.H. notices were placed on the roads of Riyadh conveying congratulations from the Banque Saudi Fransi on the New Year.

Employees of the Banque Saudi Fransi wish the Saudi people a merry year. Respected shaykh, it undoubtedly hurts every Muslim to find things like this common in the land of Tawhid (belief in the Oneness of Allah/monotheism) and Al-Haramayn Al-Sharifayn (the Two Sacred Mosques, the Sacred Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah).

I hope that Your Honor will clarify the ruling of Islam on this matter.

A:

A Muslim is prohibited to congratulate the disbelievers, Christians, Jews or whomever, on their distinctive occasions. This involves a sort of agreeing with them on their falsehood and being loyal to them.

Similarly, a Muslim is prohibited to congratulate his Muslim brother on the feasts and celebrations of the disbelievers. By doing so, a Muslim imitates them.

Muslims must resent disbelievers, dissociate themselves from them and hate their disbelief and disobedience to Allah, as Allah (Exalted be He) states, It was authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, Anyone who imitates a people becomes one of them. the Shaykh of Islam Ibn Taymiyyah commented on this Hadith saying, “This Hadith at least implies that it is prohibited for a Muslim to imitate the disbelievers though it apparently signifies the disbelief of the imitator. Allah (Exalted be He) states, …and if any amongst you takes them as Auliyâ’, then surely he is one of them.

You (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) will not find any people who believe in Allâh and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) He (Glorified be He) states, O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliyâ’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Auliyâ’ of each other. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliyâ’, then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allâh guides not those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers and unjust).

Thus, Muslims are not permitted to express joy or congratulate disbelievers on their festive occasions, whether by word of mouth, posters, newspapers, magazines, cards or the like. The legal authorities must remove these notices.

May Allah grant us success . May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

Fatwa on Islamic/Educational Animated Cartoon Movies

September 6, 2010 2 comments

Assalamu Alaikum,

This is the Fatwa on educational cartoons. One is by Shaikh Fawzaan and the other by the Lajnah Ad Daaimah.

Shaikh Salih Al Fawzaan was asked:

What is the ruling on nurturing children upon Cartoons of which the goal is to benefit them and teach them good manners?

The Shaikh said:

Allah made pictures Haraam, and it is Haraam to acquire them so how can we nurture our children upon them?? How can we nurture them upon something that is Haraam, upon pictures that are Haraam and drawings that move and speak and are similar to human beings? This is an evil picture and it is unlawful to nurture children upon it.

This is what the Kuffar want. They want us to oppose what the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم prohibited us from.  And the Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم prohibited us from pictures, and using them, and acquiring them. And those who spread it (cartoons) between the youth and the Muslims, claiming that it is from nurturing (the children) then this is immoral nurturing. And the correct nurturing is to teach them what will benefit them in their religion and worldly affairs.

Q: What is the ruling on watching and buying islamic animated-cartoon movies, given that these movies present purposeful and beneficial stories for children which promote good character, dutifulness to parents, honesty, offering Salah (Prayer) regularly and the like. These animated movies are intended as good substitutes for television which has become widespread. However, the problem we face is related to the fact that such movies present hand-drawn pictures of humans and animals. Is it permissible to watch these animated cartoons? Please advise. May Allah reward you with the best!

A: It is not permissible to buy, sell or use cartoon movies, because they include Haram pictures. Raising children should be done in ways that are Islamically acceptable with regard to teaching, disciplining, encouraging them to offer Salah and taking good care of them.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

Supplicating for an Unbeliever – Shaykh Al-Albânî

June 18, 2009 1 comment

‘Uqbah b. ‘Âmir Al-Juhanî – Allâh be pleased with him – once passed by a man who looked like a Muslim, so he greeted him with salâm, and he replied, “And upon you [be peace] and the mercy of Allâh and His blessings.” A boy informed him, “He is a Christian!” So ‘Uqbah got up and followed the man, caught up with him and said, The mercy of Allâh and His blessings are upon the believers; however, may Allâh give you a long life, and make plentiful your wealth and offspring.” [Al-Bukhârî, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad]

Shaykh Al-Albânî grades its chain of narration hasan in Sahîh Al-Adab Al-Mufrad p444, and notes,

“In this narration this illustrious Companion indicates that it is permissible to supplicate for someone to have a long life, even if he is an unbeliever, and so [this can be done for] a Muslim a fortiori…However, the supplicant should make sure that the unbeliever is not an enemy of the Muslims. It is also taken from this [narration] that such an unbeliever can be commiserated with what has been mentioned therein [i.e. the believers are the ones who will receive the mercy of Allâh and His blessings].”
