Question:

Some brothers limit their speech by; ‘good morning…good evening’ instead of ‘assalâmu alaykum wa rahmatu Allâh wa barakâtuh’ ie the greeting of Islâm. So is there any advice concerning this?

Shaykh Ibn Bâz:

Yes, that is not permitted. What is obligatory is to start with the ‘Salâm’. ‘Assalâmu alaykum.
You do not say ‘good morning’ and ‘good evening’ but rather say: ‘Assalâmu alaykum.
And if he said; ‘wa rahmatu Allâh wa barakatuh’ is better and perfect/complete.

Thereafter (after starting with the Salaam) he may says; ‘Good morning’, ‘may Allâh give you a good morning’, ‘may Allâh give you a good evening’, ‘how are you’, ‘how are your children’, ‘how is your family’, (this is) a good added greeting.
However he starts by saying; ‘Assalâmu alaykum and that is the minimum.
And if he added ‘wa rahmatu Allâh wa barakâtuh’ then that is better.
And this is how the Prophet (peace & blessings of Allâh be upon him) was with his companions. One time a man came in (joined them) and said:

“Assalâmu ‘alaykum (peace be upon you).”The Prophet said, “[He will have] ten hasanât (rewards).” Another man passed by and said “Assalâmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatu Allâh.” The Prophet, “[He will have] twenty hasanât.” Another man passed by and said “Assalâmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatu Allâhi wa barakâtuh.” The Prophet, “[He will have] thirty hasanât.” [Bukhâri]

And this is the virtue of that point of view.

Ruling On Taswir (Idols,Painting, Drawing,Sculpture,Photography) Of Any Being With A Soul – Shaikh Ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah)

Ruling On Taswir (Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Photography) Of Any Being With A Soul
Fatwas of Shaikh Ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah)

Question:

What is the ruling on Taswir (painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography), that is widely common among people? Would you please give us a comprehensive answer about lawful and unlawful Taswir? May Allah reward you!

Answer:

Praise is due to Allah alone. Peace be upon the Last Prophet!

There are many Hadith reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Sahih (authentic) books of Hadith, Musnad (Hadith compilation), and Sunan (Hadith compilations classified by jurisprudential themes) indicating the prohibition of Taswir of any being with a soul, whether human or not. These texts urge defacing pictures and curse Musawwirs (those who make pictures and statues, or photographs of living beings), indicating that they will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection.

Following are some of the Sahih Hadith that were reported in this regard. We will cite the scholars’ comments on them and explain the correct opinion concerning this matter In sha’a-Allah (if Allah wills).

It is related in the Two Sahih (authentic) Books of Hadith (i.e. Al-Bukhary and Muslim) on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) informed us that Allah (Exalted be He) stated: Who can be more unjust than one who tries to create a creation like Mine. Let them create an atom, a grain of wheat, or a grain of barley. This wording reported by Muslim.

In the Two Sahih, it is related on the authority of Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stated: The people who will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be the Musawwirs.

It is also related in the same books of Hadith on the authority of Ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stated: Those whomake siwar (pictures, images, statues) will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to them: Breathe soul into what you have created. This wording is reported by Al-Bukhari.

Also, Al-Bukhari related in the Sahih on the authority of Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade taking payment for blood, a dog, and the earnings of a prostitute. He cursed those who accept or pay Riba (usury/interest), a woman who tattoos others or gets herself tattooed, and the Musawwir.

On the authority of Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: Whoever makes a sura (picture, icon, idol, etc.) in the world will be asked to breathe soul into it (on the Day of Resurrection), but they will not be able to breathe soul (into it). (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhary and Muslim).

It is related by Muslim that Sa`id ibn Abu Al-Hasan said:

A man came to Ibn `Abbas and said: I make suras, so tell me about (the ruling on) this. Ibn `Abbas said: Come closer to me. The man did. Ibn `Abbas asked him to come closer again and the man did and he put his hand on the man’s head and said: I will tell you what I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying. I heard him saying: Every Musawwir will enter the Fire and a soul will be given to every sura they made so that it would torment them in the Fire. He added: If you have to do this (go on in this profession), then make suras of trees and everything that does not have a soul.

The statement “If you have to do this…” was related by Al-Bukhari in the aforementioned Hadith related by Muslim.

Directing The Fathers To Give Importance To Raising The Children Islamically – Shaykh Abdul-Azeez ibn Baaz

Directing The Fathers To Give Importance To Raising The Children Islamically
Shaykh Abdul-Azeez ibn Baaz

[Watch Video with English Titles Here]

Question:

I have noticed, O eminent Shaykh, that there are many of the fathers who have been negligent in raising their children leaving them to engage in things which are of the highest level of detriment to them. Due to this, I seek from your eminence that you favor us by directing the fathers to give much importance to their children; especially in this time, may Allaah reward you with good.

Answer:

In the name of Allaah the Most Merciful the Bestower of mercy; may prayers and peace from Allaah be upon Allaah’s Messenger, his family, his companions, and those who are guided with his guidance. As to what follows:

This which the questioner mentioned deserves attention, because watching over the children, males and female, and giving them attention and their Islamic cultivation is an affair which is from the most important matters. The noble Prophet ﷺ said:

كلكم راعٍ وكلكم مسؤول عن رعيته، فالرجل راع في أهل بيته ومسؤول عن رعيته، والأمير الذي ولي على الناس راعٍ ومسؤول عن رعيته، والمرأة راعية في بيت زوجها ومسؤولة عن رعيتها، والخادم راعٍ في مال سيده ومسؤول عن رعيته ثم قال: ألا وكلكم راع وكلكم مسؤول عن رعيته

Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock. The man is a shepherd over his family and he is responsible for his flock. The Ameer who has been placed in charge of the people is a Shepherd, and he is responsible for his flock. The woman is a shepherd within the house of her husband and she is responsible for her flock. The servant is a shepherd over his master’s wealth and is responsible for his flock. Then he said: Indeed each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock.

(Imaam Al-Bukhaaree reported it in his Saheeh as well as others.)

So this great Hadeeth indicates the obligation of giving importance to one’s flock. The greatest of responsibility in that is that of the Imaam who is over the people; and he is the Ameer of the Muslims and their Sultaan. It is obligatory upon him to watch over them regarding all that which contains their rectification and the safeguarding of their religion and giving attention to that which will benefit them in the Dunyaa as well as the hereafter in accordance to his ability and as much as he can. The greatest of that is to give attention to the religion so that they are upright upon it and that they cling to it; and that is by way of performing the obligatory duties and leaving the prohibited, as is obligatory upon everyone who is in charge of the affairs of the people to rules between them with the Sharee’ah of Allaah and to make them hold fast to the legislation of Allaah. And he is not to rule between them with other than the legislation of Allaah. He is responsible for that as He, the Majestic and High, has stated:

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِيْنَ ٩٢ عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ ٩٣

“So, by your Lord (O Muhammad ﷺ), We shall certainly call all of them to account, For all that they used to do.” (Al-Hijr 15:92-93)

Likewise, as in this authentic Hadeeth:

كلكم راعٍ وكلكم مسؤول عن رعيته

Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock.

So he who is placed in charge over the people is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. We ask Allaah to give the leaders of the Muslims Tawfeeq in all that which contains their rectification and the rectification of the all Muslims.

Likewise, every person is responsible for his household. So the father is responsible for his children and the mother is responsible for her children from the perspective of cultivating them Islamically and commanding them with the good and forbidding them from evil and making them cling to the truth and abandon that which opposes the legislation of Allaah. From that is the affair of the prayer; for it is the supporting pillar of Al-Islaam. So it obligatory upon the father to give attention to his children, and likewise the mother, so that they are upright upon the prayer and so that they safeguard it in the houses of Allaah along with the Muslims. Allaah the Mighty and Majestic says:

حَافِظُواْ عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ والصَّلاَةِ الْوُسْطَى

“Guard strictly (five obligatory) As¬-Salawaat (the prayers) especially the middle Salat (i.e. the best prayer ¬ ‘Asr).” (Al-Baqarah 2:238)

And He, Glorified be He, said:

وَأَقِيمُواْ الصَّلاَةَ وَآتُواْ الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُواْ مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ

“And perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and give Zakât, and Irka’ (i.e. bow down or submit yourselves with obedience to Allaah) along with Ar-¬Raki’ûn.” (Al-Baqarah 2:43)

He, the Majestic and High, said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواقُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ

“O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones.” (At-Tahrim 66:6)

The parents are included in this.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواقُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ

“O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones.” (At-Tahrim 66:6)

Paying attention to the affair of the prayer is from the reasons for protection from the Fire, for both the parent and the child. Allaah said, addressing his Prophet ﷺ

وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَاصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا

“And enjoin As-Salât (the prayer) on your family, and be patient in offering them.” (Ta-Ha 20:132)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

مروا أبناءكم بالصلاة لسبع واضربوهم عليها لعشر وفرقوا بينهم في المضاجع

Command your children to pray at seven and beat them concerning it at ten; and separate them in the bed.

So the child, whether male or female, is to be commanded to pray when he reaches seven and beaten concerning it when he reaches ten. This is because at this point he has reached and drawn near to maturity. The when he attains puberty is becomes individually obligatory and binding upon him; and he deserves, if he abandons it, to be commanded to repent; so if he repents then this is good otherwise he is killed by the leader of the Muslims. So the affair (of the prayer) is major. Hence, it is obligatory upon the fathers and the mothers, the elder brothers of the children, and their uncles to cooperate in this matter and strive hard in rectifying the children and cultivating them Islamically; and fro that is making them hold fast to the prayer and commanding them with it when they reach seven and beating them concerning it when they reach ten and fall short in that.

Likewise, they are to be commanded with that which Allaah commands them with from righteousness toward their parents and safeguarding the tongue from abuse, cursing, and lying, and other than that from sins, from that which Allaah the Mighty and Majestic has prohibited. Likewise, that they are prohibited from consuming intoxicants and smoking so that they will not grow up upon this falsehood. So it is obligatory upon the fathers and mothers to give attention to the children regarding that which benefits them in the Dunyaa and the hereafter, and it is upon them to prohibit them from that which Allaah the Mighty and Majestic has prohibited them from, so that they grow up with a righteous upbringing and so that they will be upright upon the religion of Allaah. So when they reach puberty they will know that which is obligatory upon them and what they are prohibited from and they cultivated upon doing god and upon leaving off evil; then their father, their brother, their mother, and whoever played a role in this good will have the likes of their reward, as the noble Prophet ﷺ said:

من دل على خير فله مثل أجر فاعله

He who directs to good will have the likes of the reward of the one who does it.

This is from the bounty of Allaah the glorified and High. We ask Allaah, on behalf of all, for Tawfeeq and guidance.

What do we say during an earthquake? – Sheikh Bin Baz

March 24, 2011 1 comment

Q- What do we say during an earthquake?

A – At the time of an earthquake, eclipse, strong wind or flood, (we must) repent to Allah, beseech Him, ask Him for well-being, remember Him a great deal and seek His forgiveness.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said at the time of an eclipse:

“When you see that, then turn to remembrance of Allah and call upon Him and ask for His forgiveness.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

It is also mustahabb (recommended) to show compassion to the poor and needy, and to give charity to them, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Show mercy, you will be shown mercy.” (Ahmad)

And he said: “Those who show mercy will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show mercy to those who are on earth and the One Who is in heaven will show mercy to you.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

And he also said:

The one who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.” (Al-Bukhari)

It is related from Umar Bin Abdul Aziz that he used to write to his emirs to give charity when earthquakes took place.

One of the means of being safe and sound from all evils is for those in authority to hasten to restrain the foolish and compel them to adhere to the truth, and to implement the laws of Allah among them, and to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, as Allah says:

“The believers, men and women, are Awliyaa’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al?Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al?Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); they perform As-Salaah, and give the Zakaah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them. Surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.” (Qur’an, 9:71)

“Verily, Allah will help those who help His (Cause). Truly, Allah is All?Strong, All?Mighty. Those (Muslim rulers) who, if We give them power in the land, (they) enjoin Iqamat?as?Salah (i.e. to perform the five compulsory congregational prayers), to pay the Zakaah and they enjoin Al?Ma‘roof, and forbid Al?Munkar (i.e. they make the Qur’an as the law of their country in all the spheres of life). And with Allah rests the end of (all) matters (of creatures).” (Qur’an, 22:40-41)

And there are many verses with similar meanings.

Women’s Deficiency in Deen and Reason – Ibn Baaz

Source: http://alifta.com/

Question

We always hear the Hadith: Women are lacking in their capacity to reason and in deen i.e. religion. Some people even use it to offend women. Could you kindly explain the meaning of this Hadith?

Answer by shaykh ibn baz rahimahullah:

The Hadith reads: “I have not seen anyone more deficient in ability to reason and deen than you. A cautious sensible man can be led astray by some of you.” It was said: “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! What is the deficiency in our reasoning and deen?” He said: “Is not the testimony of two women equal to the witness of one man?” It was said: “What is deficient in her deen?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Is not it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained that the deficiency in woman’s reasoning means their weak memory. Therefore, their testimony must be verified and supported by another woman to confirm their testimony, because they may forget and thus add or omit some of the testimony. Allah (He may be Praised) states:Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 282 And get two witnesses out of your own men. And if there are not two men (available), then a man and two women, such as you agree for witnesses, so that if one of them (two women) errs, the other can remind her.

As for the deficiency of their deen, it means they abandon Salah and Sawm (fasting) during their menses and post-partum period. They are not commanded to repeat Salah (prayer). This is the meaning of their being lacking in deen. They will not be called to account for this shortcoming, because it is the will of Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) Who legislated this for their comfort. If they were to observe Sawm during their menses and post-partum period, it would be difficult for them. Therefore, Allah commands them to abandon Sawm during their menses and post-partum period, and make up for it later. As for Salah, there is something which prevents them from ceremonial purity. Therefore, it is out of the Mercy of Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) that He commands them to abandon Salah during their menses and post-partum period. However, they are commanded not to compensate for Salah because there is great hardship in this, as Salah is repeated five times a day  and night, and menses may last for many days; seven, eight or more and post-partum may last for forty days. So, it was of Allah’s Mercy and Benevolence not to hold them accountable for Salah or oblige them to make up for it.

This does not mean that the lack of their deficiency to reason and deen extends to every aspect of life. The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained that the lack of their ability to reason is because of their weak memory when giving testimony, and the shortcoming in their worship is because they abandon Salah and Sawm during their menses and post-partum period. This does not mean that they are lower in rank than men in all things, or men are better than them in everything.

Generally speaking, males excel females for many reasons. Allah states:Surah Al-Nisa’, 4: 34 Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allâh has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means.

However, some women may excel men. There are many women whose reason is better than men, and are stronger in deen and memorization. The report of the Prophet (peace be upon him) only indicates that the male gender is generally better in reasoning and deen than the female gender in the two aspects specified by the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Women may perform more righteous deeds than men, their piety may be more than men, and thus their rank in the Hereafter may be better than the rank of men. They may focus on some matters and memorize them better than men. They exert effort in memorization and focus, so they established a reference in Islamic history as well as other things which are clear to those who consider the conditions of women during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and later. It is now evident that this deficiency does not mean that we cannot rely on her in narration or testimony, if she is supported by another woman. Anyway, this report does not prevent her from being of the best servants of Allah  if they perform righteous deeds; although Sawm is overlooked during their menses and post-partum, and even if they are exempt from performing Salah. This does not mean that they are lower in everything. Men and women are equally required to observe the standards of piety, good actions, and careful performance of things in their charge. This specific lack of reason and deen is limited to what the Prophet (peace be upon him) explained. So, a Muslim must not offend women by attributing deficiency to them in everything, but it is a flaw in their worship and weakness in reasoning with regard to accuracy of testimony. Thus, the Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) should be properly understood. Allah knows the best.

Ilm-ul-Kalam (Knowledge Of Theological Rhetoric) – Ibn Baz

January 24, 2010 3 comments

Ilm-ul-Kalam (knowledge of theological rhetoric)

[ A discipline that searches for answers to creedal issues using Logic ]

Ilmul-Kalaam (argumentation based on Greek philosophy) is among such innovations in the religion that created intellectual schisms in the Muslim nation and initiated deviant trends. One of the sects that indulged in Ilmul-Kalaam were the Mu’tazilah. They gave precedence to intellect over the revealed texts of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah – when they perceived the two conflicted. This attitude set an evil precedent for all later groups who sought to make intellect and desire decisive over the Qur’aan and the Sunnah

Ibn Baz Fatwa on this topic:

Q 3: Some people read many intellectual and scientific books and think that they have become a scholar or a Da’y (caller to Islam), although they may have poor knowledge in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and have not read any books about Shari’ah (Islamic law). What is Your Eminence’s opinion in this regard?

A: Knowledge of Shari’ah is derived from what Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have said, and not from someone else’s words. The first source of Islamic knowledge is the Word of Allah and His Messenger, then the views of Muslim scholars who explain and interpret them for people. These scholars are Allah’s successors on earth after the messengers.

Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) says:(Surah Al-`Imran, 3: 18) Allýh bears witness that Lý ilýha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness). Here, knowledge refers to knowing Allah and His Religion. Allah (may He be Exalted) says:(Surah Fatir, 35: 28) It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allýh. They are the messengers and their insightful followers, who follow this truthful religion and abide by the Qur’an and Sunnah (whatever is reported from the Prophet). Muslim scholars are the heirs of Messengers, since they explain the religion and guide others to Allah.

Moreover, a true knowledge seeker studies and reflects on the Qur’an and Sunnah and learns from Muslim scholars. This is the way of acquiring knowledge of Shari`ah which involves doing acts of obedience, meditating and benefiting from others. A knowledge seeker should read a lot, with the aim of attaining as much knowledge as possible. They should reflect on knowledge and look for answers to unclear matters in trustworthy books of Tafsir (exegesis of the meanings of the Qur’an) such as Tafsir by Ibn Kathir, Al-Baghawy and others, in addition to paying great attention to books of Hadith. Furthermore, knowledge of Shari`ah should be taken from knowledgeable scholars among Ahl-ul-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah (those adhering to the Sunnah and the Muslim main body) and not scholars of ‘Ilm-ul-Kalam (a discipline that searches for answers to creedal issues using logic), innovators in religion or ignorant people.

Anything that is not included in the Qur’an and Sunnah cannot be considered Islamic knowledge, even if it is useful in worldly affairs. Here, we are concerned about knowledge that is useful in the Hereafter, which eliminates ignorance, clarifies the religion and shows people what Allah has made lawful and unlawful to them. Indeed, this is the true knowledge of Shari`ah.

How to Pay Zakah on Ones’s Salary – Ibn Baz (rahimahullaah)

Zakaah on an Employee’s Salary – Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked:

There is a man who depends on his monthly salary; he spends some and saves the rest. How should he pay zakaah on this money?

He replied:

He should write down what he saves of his salary, and pay zakaah on it when one year has passed. Zakaah should be paid on the savings of each month when one year has passed. If he pays zakaah on the total in the first month, there is nothing wrong with that and he will be rewarded for that, and it will be regarded as zakaah paid in advance for the savings for which one year has not yet passed. There is no reason why a person should not pay zakaah in advance if he sees some benefit in doing so. But delaying it after the year has passed is not permissible, unless there is a valid shar’i excuse, such as the wealth not being available or there being no poor people. End quote.

Tuhfat al-Ikhwaan bi Ajwabah Muhimmah tata’allaq bi Arkaan al-Islam (question no. 12)

Here is an Answer from Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah :

If he insists on having all his rights and on not giving any charity to those who deserve it apart from what he is obliged to give, then he should make a schedule of his earnings and write down every amount and the date on which he took possession of it. Then he should pay zakaah for each amount separately when one year has passed from the date on which he took possession of it.

But if he wants an easier method, and wants to be more generous and give precedence to the poor and others who are entitled to zakaah over himself, then he can pay zakaah on all the money he possesses when one year has passed from the date when his wealth first reached the nisaab. This will bring a greater reward and raise him higher in status; it is easier for him and is more generous towards the poor and needy and others who are entitled to zakaah. Whatever extra amount he may pay will be regarded as a “down payment” on the zakaah for any wealth for which one year has not yet passed.

Women Working Without Being In Need Of It – Imam Abdul-Aziz bin Abdillah bin Baz (rahimahullaah)

July 15, 2009 2 comments

AsSalam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah

Women working without being in need of it
Imam Abdul-Aziz bin Abdillah bin Baz

Question:

Does a woman follow her whims and desires if she’s working without being in need of the money ?

Answer:

No, she is not. She doesn’t follow her whims and desires if it is a noble and respected work with no free mixing. If she only works amongst women without any unjustice taking place and hostility, all while her husband is allowing her to work if she is married, then she is not following her whims and desrires.

There is different kinds of work. If it maintains disobediance to Allah, then it is obligatory on her to leave it. If the job leads to free mixing between men and women and showing her beauty, then this is also haram.

But if it is allowed and Shariah-based, as being a teacher for girls, or a nurse, doctor for women. Then it is a permissble act. Alhamdulillah.

Question :

If she isn’t in need of the money, is it still permissble ?

Answer:

Yes it is. She might for example, want more money, or need it to give away in charity etc.

Allaah’s Shade for Women – Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Baz (rahimahullaah)

Allah’s Shade for Women
Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Baz (rahimahullaah)

Question:

The Hadith regarding the seven to whom Allah gives shade to, on the day when there will be no shade except His — is it specific to men, or will women receive the reward mentioned if they do exactly the same deeds?

Ans:

The reward mentioned in this Hadith is not specific to men, but rather, it includes both men and women. The Hadith applies to a young girl, for instance, who grows up worshipping Allah Almighty. Similarly, it applies to women who love one another for the sake of Allah, or to a woman who, when she is seduced by a handsome man of good position, says, “Indeed, I fear Allah.”

It also applies to a woman who gives charity from good and honestly earned wealth, yet her left hand doesn’t know what her right hand has spent, and to the woman who remembers Allah when she is alone.

As for the quality of being a just Imam (ruler), or congregational prayer in the Masjid, these two are specific to men, for the prayer of a woman in her home is better for her, a fact that is related in authentic narrations from Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him).
