Advice concerning the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah – Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen

October 27, 2011 2 comments

In the name of Allaah, The All-Wise, The All-Knower, and may peace and blessings be upon the noblest of Prophets and Messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions, as for what follows;

Advice concerning the Ten days of Dhul-Hijjah by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him.

Question:

Oh noble sheikh, in a few days we wll be entering into the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. So what is your advice for the people regarding taking advantage of them? I hope for an explanation of its’ virtues and the actions that should be performed in it.

Answer: The ten days of Dhul-Hijjah begins wth the entrance of the month and ends on the day of the ‘eid. The Messneger, may peace and blessings be upon him, said about actions in these ten days:

“There are no days wherein righteous actions are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days.” They said: Not even jihad in the way of Allaah? He said: “Not even jihad in the way of Allaah, except for a man who leaves out (for jihad) with his wealth and self and doesn’t return back with any of them.”[Ibn 'Abbaas-Saheeh Bukhaaree]

So with this I strongly encourage my muslim brothers to sieze this tremendous oppurtunity, to perform many righteous actions in these ten days from recitation of the Qur’aan, rememberance of Allaah, charity, fasting, etc, strive to perform many different acts of obedience.

Its’ very troubling to see that the people are heedless about these ten days. Do you not find them exerting themselves in the last ten nights of Ramadan? Na’m of course they exert themselves in them. However with the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah you will be hard pressed to find one who differentiates between them and other than them. But if a person performs righteous actions in these ten days he revives that which the Messneger, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed with doing.

Also if an individual intends to slaughter at the ending of these ten days then he shouldn’t remove anything from his hair, nails, or body.

As for someone slaughtering on his behalf, then there’s nothing wrong with him clipping his own nails or cutting his hair. And if a person wants to slaughter for himself and his household with one sacrifice as is the sunnah, then it isn’t upon his family to abide by this principle. It only pertains to the one slaughtering, in this instance that being the father…

“Do not accustom yourself to comfort and luxury”

October 24, 2011 1 comment

With regards to the student of knowledge not chasing after the luxuries and comforts of this world, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al ‘Uthaymeen rahimahullaah comments:

(The author’s advice), “do not accustom yourself to comfort and luxury”.

This is advice to be said to the student of knowledge and (also) to other than the student of knowledge – because accustoming oneself to that is contrary to the guidance of the Prophet sall Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. For indeed he used to forbid from an abundance of luxuriousness and he would command with walking barefoot sometimes.

And a person who has become accustomed to a luxurious life will find it difficult when he encounters (certain) matters – because sometimes there will come to him matters in a form where he is not able to have the luxury (he is used to) along with him.

And let us strike an example, with the example which we have mentioned in the hadeeth: he would command with walking barefoot sometimes. Some people do not walk barefoot – always there is a sock upon him, and upon it a leather sock, and upon it a shoe. You will not find him walking, this man, if a temporary impediment were to occur to him and he were to be told to walk 500 metres without any protection for the foot; you would find that extremely difficult upon him. And sometimes his foot would bleed from the contact with the ground.

However if he were to accustom himself to a roughness and to leaving off always having comfort, then he would attain much good.

So if the (person’s) body is not accustomed to the like of these matters (of forsaking luxury), then he will have no manaa’ah (strength and toughness). You will find him feeling pain from anything from that (affair which is difficult).

However if he has manaa’ah then he will not be bothered by it.

Whistling and Clapping Hands is from Jaahiliyyah

October 24, 2011 2 comments

[21] They performed worship by whistling and clapping their hands.

- the explanation -

From the aspects of the Days of Ignorance that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) opposed them in was their performance of worship to Allaah by means of whistling and clapping. Allaah says:

“And their prayer at the House (Ka’bah) was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. So taste the torment because of what you used to disbelieve.” [Surah Al-Anfaal:25]

This means: The worship that the polytheists performed to Allaah at the sacred Ka’bah was nothing more than whistling and clapping.

The word mukaa means whistling, while tasdeeyah means clapping with the hands and palms. They would do this while at the House of Allaah and call it prayer, seeking nearness to Allaah through it. This is one of the things the devils among mankind and the jinn beautified to them, in order to deceive them.

Worship is not to be done except according to what Allaah has legislated – so it is dependent upon revelation. A person must not introduce something from his own self or take it from someone else when it is not according to what Allaah has legislated, thus worshipping Allaah by it even though it has no source in the religion.

Here, we can derive the prohibition of these two matters, which are: whistling and clapping. They are forbidden even though one may not intend to be performing worship by them, since there can be found imitation of the polytheists in it.

As for clapping, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) only allowed it specifically1 for women at the time of a necessity, such as to notify the Imaam if he has omitted or added something to the prayer. This was due to the fitnah that could occur from their voice if there are men present. And it is not permissible for a man to imitate the disbelievers or to imitate a women by clapping.

وَمَا كَانَ صَلاَتُهُمْ عِندَ الْبَيْتِ إِلاَّ مُكَاء وَتَصْدِيَةً فَذُوقُواْ الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ1 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه‏) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Saying Subhaanallaaah is for men and clapping is for women.” [Transmitted by Al-Bukhaaree (no. 1203) and Muslim (no. 422/106)] And in the hadeeth of Sahl bin Sa’ad, he reported that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Why is it that I see you clapping so much. Whoever is doubtful about something is the prayer, let him SubhanAllaah for if one says it, it will attract attention. Clapping is only for women.” Transmitted by Al-Bukhaaree (no. 684) and Muslim (no. 421)]

From the book Masaa’il-ul-Jaahiliyyah (Aspects of the Days of Ignorance) by Shaykh Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhaab (d.1206h) explained by Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan.

The look is one of the poisonous arrows of the Devil

The look is one of the poisonous arrows of the Devil. If a person shoots it out, it is indeed a poisonous missile that kills the one who sends it. This arrow returns back to the heart of the one looking.

The look is a poisonous arrow that returns to the heart of the onlooker, striking it and affecting it, or killing it and causing it to die. So none of them should look at what Allaah has forbidden. The creation of this look and this eyesight is a blessing, which humans must use for only that which Allaah has permitted. He must use them for only those things that Allaah has allowed and refrain from using them for those things that Allaah has forbidden. Allaah says about men: “Tell the believing men to lower their gaze.” [Surah An-Noor: 30] And He says about women: “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze.” [Surah An-Noor: 31]

32 None of the Muslims leave IslaamUnless they Reject an Aayah from the Qur.aan or any Narrations from the Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam

33 Anyone who Explains anything from the Narrations according to his Desires or Rejects them is a Jahmee

58 Some of the Scholars Declared the Jahmee to be a Disbeliever

59 Knowledge of the Sunnah and Jamaa’ah was Wiped Away by the Jahmiyyah; There has Never been any Heresy except from the Ignorant Rabble who Follow Anyone who Calls out Wildly

60 There will not Cease to be a Group of People of the Truth and the Sunnah

61 The Scholar is the One who Follows the Book and the Sunnah;  Whoever Speaks about the Religion without Proof has Overstepped the Limits; The Sunnah is what the Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam laid down, the Jamaa’ah is what the Companions united upon
