A Subtle Point for the Student of Knowledge – Moosa Richardson

February 26, 2011 2 comments

In the Name of Allaah…

Scenario:

A student actively attends an important lesson regularly, takes notes, and tries not to miss anything. He gets there early to get a good seat to make sure he can hear clearly. If someone asks him something in the lesson, he merely gestures for him to ask later. His phone is always on silent, he pays no attention to it during the lesson. Whatever people want from him, he will attend to it after the lesson. He is focused on the lesson entirely. He asks follow-up questions.

Another Scenario:

A student attends the same important lesson regularly, but he does not take notes. He does not get there early, and so he sits in the back. If someone asks him something in the lesson, he responds and helps. He points out the direction of the bathroom… he may even explain who the shaykh is to a new student. His phone is active, he occasionally answers calls or reads and responds to text messages. Since he misses much of the content of the lesson, he does not ask follow-up questions.

If years go by and the student continues upon the path mentioned in the first scenario, then we have the makings of a serious student, maybe even a scholar eventually, and Allaah is the One who grants success.

If years go by and the student continues upon the path mentioned in the second scenario, then we have another brother who “studied”.

Would you believe that the two scenarios are describing the same student?

Its a common before-and-after case for a student who bought or was given an audio recording device.

It is common that when the recorder is used, the student relaxes, he doesn’t take notes, its “all there in the recording”, I’ll review it later, I’ll take notes when I listen to it, I’ll even transcribe it later… And the Shaytaan has slipped in, in the most deceptive of ways, and taken him far away from what will benefit him, by getting him to rely on that recorder. In the end, he’s got loads of recordings that are way too many for him to begin to review, and under the pressure of a university system, he has no time to go back and study them, until perhaps his studies are over. Then, he listens to them, but now he’s like everyone else in the West, listening to audio recordings, he’s not a student of knowledge in a study circle with the scholars. He had the chance to be one, but he let it slip away.

While the technology we have been blessed with can serve our religious goals in many ways, this is a very subtle point that needs to be highlighted regarding the use of audio recordings at Islaamic lessons. This applies more directly to students of knowledge in the Muslim lands studying under the scholars.

Advice: Don’t use a recording device. Sit at the feet of your shaykh, and watch his lips! Try not to miss a word. Don’t miss a class. Phone is on silent or off. Pen in hand. Book or text on your lap. Material previewed before the lesson. Your notes reviewed with a good student after the lesson. There is no safety net! You must get that knowledge at that sitting, or you will miss it! This approach is many times more effective than attending to record the lecture.

If you feel you have that safety net, you will very likely let your guard down and become lazy at the lesson, to one degree or another, so beware of the subtle tricks of your sworn enemy!

Who would have thought that Shaytaan could use a voice recorder at a scholar’s lesson against you?!

And Allaah knows best.

Evil Omens and pessimistic about one’s house

February 23, 2011 1 comment

Fatwas of Nur `Ala Al-Darb

Q: There are some people who have a house. They were in prosperity. Then, adversities inflicted them in this house until they were pessimistic and sold it. Some of the events that inflicted them in this house were temptations and suicide of some of the family members. Is this a kind of pessimism? Guide people to the truth! May Allah reward you well!

A: This is not a kind of forbidden pessimism.

It was authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Pessimism is in three things; house, beast of burden and a woman. “Evil omens may be of these three things. It was mentioned in another narration: “If there is an evil omen, it will be in three things;” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned the previous. It may happen that a woman may bring evil to her husband. If it appears what denotes evil omens in her morals, behavior or the sequence of calamities that inflict her husband as loss and depression of his commerce, destruction of his farm and the like, it will be permissible for him to divorce her. Similarly, if evil events come successively as bad circumstances or diseases for him and his children and family in this house, it will be permissible for him to move to another one because of the authentic Hadith mentioned in this regard. The same ruling is applied also to the beast of burden, such as camels, horses and the like. If he finds no benefit in a beast of burden and evil events come repeatedly because of it, there will be nothing wrong to sell it and exchange it with another one according to the text of the Hadith reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him).

References added for the clarity:

Al-Bukhaari (5093) and Muslim (2252) narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Bad omens are in a woman, a house and a horse.”

Al-Bukhaari (5094) and Muslim, (2252) narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: Mention of bad omens was made in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If bad omens are to be found in anything, it is in a house, a woman and a horse.”

Abu Dawood (3924) narrated that Anas ibn Maalik said: A man said: “O Messenger of Allaah, we were in a house and our numbers and wealth were great, then we moved to another house where our numbers and wealth decreased.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Leave it, it is bad.” This hadeeth was classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

The ruling on asking another person to supplicate Allah for their sake

February 23, 2011 4 comments

Q:  Sister Aum Al-Bara’ from Abha, asks: What is the ruling on asking a person to supplicate Allah for them? One may ask another person to supplicate Allah for their sake during their travel or may ask them not to forget them during their supplications. Is it a kind of supplication to anyone other than Allah? Guide us to the right behavior in this regard. May Allah reward you with best.

A: It is permissible to ask a fellow Muslim brother or sister to supplicate Allah for one’s sake. It is not a kind of abhorred Tawassul (seeking to draw close to Allah through lawful means). Once, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to his Companions: “A Yemeni person called Uuays Al-Qarni will come to you. He was dutiful to his mother. Whoever meets him from among you should ask him to ask Allah’s forgiveness for his sake.” It was reported also that he (peace be upon him) said to `Umar when he set on a journey to perform `Umrah (lesser pilgrimage): “Do not forget us in your supplication!

There is no blame if one asks their brother to supplicate to Allah for their sake during their travel or to invoke Allah to grant them a righteous offspring or a wife. There is also no blame if one’s sister or mother asks them to supplicate Allah for her sake. It is permissible for a Muslim to ask his brother or sister to supplicate Allah for his sake.

The difference between Tawassul and Wasilah

February 23, 2011 Leave a comment

Fatwas of Nur `Ala Al-Darb

Q: What is the difference between Tawassul and Wasilah?

A: Tawassul (supplicating to Allah in the name of …/by virtue of the status of…) is the supplications recited by a person. It is a kind of supplication. One can say, “I invoke You by Your Names.” This is a sort of Tawassul. Also, one may say, “I invoke You by my faith in You.” This is also a way of Tawassul. Here the Wasilah (the means of approach to Allah) is faith, piety and Allah’s Most Beautiful Names. You are the person practicing Tawassul. The Tawassul itself is your supplications.  Wasilah refers to the words used in your supplications. When you say, “O Allah! I invoke You by Your Most Beautiful Names and Sublime Attributes to forgive me,” you are the person practicing Tawassul through this supplication. The Wasilah or the means of approach to Allah here is His Names and Attributes. Allah’s Names and Attributes are called Wasilah. This means that supplicating to Allah by His Names and Attributes is a sort of Wasilah. The wording of supplication is called Tawassul. It is a sort of supplicating to Allah by faith, by Allah’s Names and Attributes, or by one’s good deeds.

Poem: A Muslim Child from the West

February 20, 2011 3 comments

I have to be patient and wait on Allah’s decree

I constantly pray that hijrah awaits me,

I wish to move to the land of the moslimoon

I wish that the distance between me and the mushrik is like

The distance of the Earth to the moon

I want to be raise in a pious land

Where scholars and students are as far away as a hand span

I want this for myself and not because of my parents

I want to please Allah and that is all that is apparent

I wish I can dream a dream of making Hajj

and then getting on the plane heading to Damaaj

My parents taught me the importance of gaining knowledge

and now its of my own desire to go to Salafi College

You see Harvard University doesn’t impress me

send me to the Medina Univeristy

I want to know more of my Lord before I meet Him

I don’t want to be of those who lose, but those who win

It is hard to find peers on the same page

A lot of people my age just think there is still time to play

I am very careful of the company I keep

Making sure they are strong so I may not become weak

A muslim child in the west has Oh so many tests

I wish to be a Muslim Child in the east

sitting with the scholars where my mind is at peace

Allaah Empowers Tyrannical, Oppressive Rulers Over the Subjects Due to Their Own Oppression and Corruption – Ibn Abil-Izz al-Hanafi

February 12, 2011 1 comment

The vast majority of the groups present today in the field of da’wah try to win the sentiments and support of the people by focusing and pointing their fingers towards the rulers. They make them the scapegoats for all the calamities, evils and ills to befall the Ummah, and subsequently make their methodologies of reform based around coups, revolutions and bringing about the downfall and replacement of governments. All of this is based upon ignorance of the Sharee’ah and ignorance of Allaah’s Divine wisdom, and is a mental outlook that is based upon a corrupt underlying aqidah.

Ibn Abil-Izz al-Hanafi stated in explanation of the saying of Imaam at-Tahaawi,

We do not consider (the permissibility) of revolting against our leaders and rulers of our affair, even if they are tyrannical…“, as occurs in Sharh Aqidah at-Tahawiyyah (1/430):

And as for adhering to obedience to them (the Rulers), even if they commit oppression, then this is because the evils and harms that arise on account of rebelling against them is numerous times more than that which occurs as a result of the oppression of the Rulers themselves. Rather, in having patience over their oppression there is expiation of sins, and a multiplication of the reward.

For Allaah did not empower them over us, except due to the corruption in our actions, and the recompense for an action is its like (al-jazaa’u min jins il-’amal). Hence, it is upon us to strive (ijtihaad) in seeking forgiveness, making repentance and rectification of our actions.

Allaah the Most High said, “And whatever affliction befalls you, then it is from what your hands have earned, yet He pardons many.” (42:30), and He, the Most High said, “If a calamity befell you (the believers),[your enemies] were inflicted with twice as much, but you said, “Where did this(calamity) come from?” Say: It has come from your own selves.” (3:165), and He the Most High said, “And whatever evil befalls you, then it is from your own soul.” (4:79), and He the Most High said, “And thus do we turn some of the oppressors against others on account of what they used to earn.” (6:129).

Hence, if the subjects (of a state) wish to save themselves from the oppression of the tyrannical ruler, then let them abandon oppression themselves. And from Malik bin Deenaar (who said) that it has come in some of the (previous revealed) Books of Allaah:

“I am the King of the dominion, the hearts of the kings are in my Hand. So whoever obeyed me, I made them (the kings) a mercy over him, and whoever disobeyed me, I made them a vengeance upon him. So do not occupy yourselves with reviling the kings, but rather repent and I will make them compassionate upon you.”

All of the jamaa’aat (groups) that have appeared in the 20th century, claiming to rectify the Ummah, have fallen into deviation in their methodologies of reform and they have not judged by what Allaah has revealed in their understandings, their methodologies and their calls. They wrongly believe by removing one ruler, or one government they can establish Allaah’s law, or that they can do so through political parties that engineer coups and revolutions while turning a blind eye to or belittling the fact that the Muslims are far removed from that Islaam which gave honour and victory to the Companions, but upon an Islaam tainted with innovations, devations, foreign philosophies and ideologies in the fields of aqidah and ibaadah and manhaj and siyaasah. And thus, that tainted Islam they are following does not have the same effect in bringing about the aid and support of Allaah and the granting of success as that pure Islaam, with its purity in aqidah, and tawhid, that the Companions were upon.

The activities of these groups claiming to rectify the Ummah are based upon methodologies that are in opposition to the Book, the Sunnah and the way of the Righteous Salaf whose belief and methodology Allaah has made a criterion of truth in all affairs of the religion.

Sunnah Husna (Good Sunnah) & Bidah Husna (Good Bidah)

February 12, 2011 2 comments

Meaning of the Hadeeth,

“…He who initiates a Sunnah Husna (a good Sunnah) in Islam.”

The fundamental argument of those who support the celebration of Mawlid an-Nabawi is that they refer to the celebration of Mawlid an-Nabawi as a ‘Bidah Husna’ for which they present arguments such as the saying of Umar (radhi Allaahu anhu), “What a good Bidah is this?’, the gathering of the Qur’aan in one book and the collection of Hadeeth – which are explicitly refuted by Shaikh Salih al-Fawzan.

However, one of their main argument still remains unanswered that Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said, “He, who establishes/initiates a Sunnah Husna (good Sunnah) in Islam, he will have the reward of those who perform it after him until the Day of Judgment.” [Saheeh Muslim]

In a reply to this argument, Shaikh Fawzan says in a Fatawa,

“This Hadeeth does not prove their stance because Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) did not say, ‘Whosoever innovates a Bidah,’ rather he said, “Whosoever initiates a good Sunnah.” and Sunnah is the opposite of Bidah.

Sunnah is something that is in agreement with the Qur’aan and the Sunnah and in agreement with the proof. So (the meaning of the Hadeeth is) he, who performs a Sunnah which is proved by the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, he will have the reward of it (his action) and the reward of those who perform it until the Day of Judgment.

(Thus) Whoever revives a Sunnah and performs it for the people, and enlightens it before them, and they follow him then he will have the reward equal to theirs.

The reason/context of the Hadeeth is well-known. When some needy people came to Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam), he was grieved to see their state, and he ordered and encouraged Sadaqah (charity). One man from the Sahabah stood up and gave in charity a huge amount and the people followed him because he took the first step. Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said on this occasion, “He, who (Sanna) establishes/initiates a Sunnah Husna (good Sunnah) in Islam, he will have the reward of those who perform it after him until the Day of Judgment.” [Saheeh Muslim]

So, this man performed a Sunnah i.e., Sadaqah and helping the poor. Sadaqah is not a Bidah because it is ordered in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah. It is a Sunnah Husna. He who revives a Sunnah and acts upon it and enlightens it for the people until they follow him, he will have the reward equal to their rewards.”

[al-Muntaqa min Fatawa Shaikh Salih ibn Fawzan al-Fawzan (1/173), Fatawa no. 96]

Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saleh al-Uthaimeen (rahimahullah) explained the issue in these words, “Bidah in Sharee’ah can be defined as, ‘worshiping Allah with that which is not legislated by Allah.’ If you wish, you can say, ‘worshiping Allah with that which Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) and Khulafa ar-Rashidoon were not upon.’

The first definition is deduced from the verse, “Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed.” [Soorah ash-Shura (42): 21]

The second definition is deduced from the Hadeeth, “Stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of my rightly guided Caliphs, cling to it firmly with your molar teeth. Beware of newly invented matters, for every new matter is an innovation and every innovation is misguidance.” [At-Tirmidhee (2676)]

So, anyone who worships Allah with that which Allah did not legislate or with that which Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) or the Rightly Guided Caliphs were not upon then he has innovated regardless or whether that worship is linked to the Names and Attributes of Allah, His Orders or Sharee’ah.

As far as the common practices or traditions are concerned, they are not called Bidah in Deen. They may be referred to as Bidah in the language but not in Deen. This is not the Bidah from which Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) has warned against.

There is no Bidah Husna in Islam. The Sunnah Husna is that which is in agreement with the Sharee’ah and this includes that one may initiate a Sunnah, which means that one starts practicing the Sunnah (before others and others follow him), or he revives it after it has been forgotten, or he does something that may become a means for a legislated command. So, these are three things:

1. Applying (the ruling of initiating a) Sunnah upon one, who initiates an action. This meaning is proved by the intent behind the saying of Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam), which is encouragement towards Sadaqah (charity) to the needy people who had come to Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam).

The Prophet (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) encouraged, and a man from the Ansar brought out gold for charity. Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said, “He, who establishes/initiates a Sunnah Husna (good Sunnah) in Islam, he will have the reward of those who perform it after him until the Day of Judgement.” [Saheeh Muslim]

So, this man (Sanna) initiated practicing the action and he did not initiate (or innovate) in the Sharee’ah.

2. Reviving a forgotten Sunnah by someone who practices it is also called ‘Sunna’ (initiating) meaning ‘revive’…

3. To do something which is a means to performing a legislated command like building (Islamic) schools and publishing books. This act is not a worship in itself but since it is a means (to perform a legislated command) it is included in the Hadeeth of Allah’s Messenger (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam), “He, who establishes/initiates a Sunnah Husna (good Sunnah) in Islam, he will have the reward of those who perform it after him until the Day of Judgment.” [Saheeh Muslim]

[Majmoo Fatawa wa-Rasaa'el Fadhilatus-Shaikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaimeen (291/2) Fatawa no. 346]
