The Difference between Riya and Hypocrisy

December 18, 2010 Leave a comment

The Difference between Riya and Hypocrisy. Aren’t they the One?
Al-Alaamah Hafith Al-Hakimee (may Allah have mercy on him)

You should first know that the word Riya is used in the Quran, with the meaning of major hypocrisy. Allah says, “like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allah, nor the Last Day…[ Al-Baqarah 264]. Also there are other verses in the Quran which states the word, “ RIYA” , and  refers to hypocrisy.

The difference between Riya, which is major hypocrisy and the Riya which is minor shirk , is illustrated in the hadeeth, “ Actions are by intentions…” [ Bukhari 1 and Muslim 1907]. The intention is what distinguishes the action in who or what, it is done for. The word Niyyah (intention) is mentioned in the Quran with the wording, “desires the Hereafter… or seeking Allah’s reward.

Therefore, any person who carries out an act that is seeking Jannah, sincere for Allah, and agrees with the legislated acts of worship, then this act is a righteous deed and accepted. On the other hand, any person who does an act that is done for other than Allah , then this is an act of major hypocrisy. It makes no difference whether it’s done for fame, done for seeking leadership or practiced for some worldly gain.

Allah says, “Whoever desires the quick passing of this world, We readily, grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell; he will burn therein disgraced and rejected. And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it while he is a believer, then such ones whose striving shall be appreciated.[ Isra 17-18]

And nonetheless, the person who performs an act desiring Allah’s Paradise, however some showing off, or intentional beautification of the act occurs with it, then this is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called, “ Shirkul Asghar”. It’s also explained as being ,” Riya Amaleeya”

In conclusion, this type of act doesn’t take a person out of Islam, but it lessens the value of the deed . Sometimes this showing off predominates the sincere intention, and as result of that , the deed is totally null and void for Allah’s acceptance. We seek refuge in Allah.

We ask Allah to make all of our deeds sincere and righteous for His sake.

When Entering An Empty or Vacant House, Say…

December 18, 2010 Leave a comment

عن عبد الله بن عمر قال: “إذا دخل البيت غير المسكون، فليقل: السلام علينا، وعلى عباد الله الصالحين”

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When someone enters a vacant home, he should say, “As-Salamu ‘Alayna wa ‘Ala ‘Ibad-Allah-is-Saliheen” (“Peace be upon us and on the righteous salves of Allah.”)

Collected by Bukhari in Adabul Mufrad 1055] Graded as being Hasan by Ibn Hajr and Al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on them both)

Al-Albani (may Allah rest him in Jannah) said, “This narration establishes an Islamic regulation for entering a vacant house. This practice coincides with the order of spreading salaams found in some authentic hadeeth. Furthermore this Athar agrees with the verse, “When you enter your houses greet one another with: As-Salamu Alaikum…[ An-Nur 61]

Therefore based on this verse and narration from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) Ibn Hajr held it was recommended to say, “Peace be upon us and on the righteous salves of Allah, when entering an empty house as well.

The Hadeeth for saying,” (In the name of Allah)”, when entering the home is authentic on the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). It is collected in Muslim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,”

“If a man enters his home and says” in the name of Allah” and before he eats, Shaytan says to his Jinn ,” You can’t stay there tonight and you can’t eat there as well.” [ Muslim 5381]

Tremendous Virtues

Source:  Abu ‘Abdis Salaam Siddiq Al Juyaanee (hafidhahullaah) – salafitalk.net

“Whoever says: ‘Glorified is Allah, the Most Great, and praised is He’ [Subhan Allah al-'Adhim wa bi-Hamdih] will have a date palm planted for him in Paradise.”['Sahih al-Jami' #5531]

“Whoever is stricken with sadness, grief, sickness or hardship and says: ‘Allah is my Lord, without any partners’ [Allahu Rabbi, la sharika lah], then it will be removed from him.”  ['Sahih al-Jami' #6040]

“Whoever ate something, then said: ‘Praise be to Allah who has fed me this food and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part’ [al-Hamdu lillah aladhi at'amani hadha wa Razaqnih bi ghayr hawlin minni wa la quwwa] is forgiven his past and future sins.

And whoever wears a garment and says: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part [al-Hamdu lillah aladhi kasani hadha at-thawb wa Razaqnih bi ghayr hawlin minni wa la quwwa] is forgiven his past and future sins.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6086]

“Whoever enters the marketplace and says: ‘There is none worthy of worship except Allah who has no partners, for Him is the Dominion, and for Him is all Praise, He brings life and He causes death, and He is Alive and does not die, in His Hand is all good, and He is able to do all things,’ [La ilaha ill-Allah, Wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-Mulk, wa lahul-Hamd, yuhyiyy wa yumit, wa Huwa Hayyun la yamut, bi Yadihil-Khayr wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir] then Allah will write one million good deeds for him, and will wipe away one million of his bad deeds, and will raise him one million levels and will build a home for him in Paradise.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6231]

“Whoever controls his anger when he is able to act upon it, then Allah will call him to come in front of all of the Creation so that he would let him choose from the Hur al-’Ayn and marry from them whomever he pleases.” ['Sahih al-Jami' #6518]

“Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times [Allahumma inni as'aluk al-Jannah], then Paradise will say: ‘O Allah! Enter him into Paradise!’ And whoever seeks protection with Allah from the Fire three times [Allahumma najjini min an-Nar], the Fire will say: ‘O Allah! Protect him from the Fire!’” [Reported by at-Tirmidhi, and it is authentic]

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud said: ‘Whoever reads ‘al-Mulk’ (chapter 67 of the Qur`an) every night, Allah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we used to call it al-mani’ah (that which protects). In the Book of Allah, it is a chapter which – whoever recites it every night – has done very well.” ['Sahih at-Targhib wat-Tarhib' #1475]

“Whoever asks Allah sincerely for martyrdom [Allahumma inni as'aluk ash-shahadah], Allah will cause him to reach the status of the martyrs even if he dies in his bed.” ['Sahih al-Bukhari' #1909]

“No one witnesses that there is none worthy of worship but Allah and that I am Allah’s Messenger – truthfully, from his heart – except that Allah makes the Fire of Hell forbidden to touch him.” [Reported by Muslim, Ahmad, and al-Bayhaqi]

Important Note: In light of these tremendous virtues, it is important to keep in mind that the Salaf (radiallaahu ‘anhum) would throw their good deeds behind them – meaning they would not rely on them nor become complacent – and keep their sins in front of them.

A Summary of the Lessons and Benefits of Prayer*1
From Ibnul Qayyim’s The Path to Guidance, Chapter Nine, pp 89-92 ,

Translated by: Aboo ‘Iyaad Amjad Rafiq

(1) That Allaah, the Exalted, wipes away sins by the five prayers.

(2) That the five prayers are an expiation for what occurs between them, if major sins are avoided.

(3) That sins burn and destroy a person, and thus it is necessary to extinguish that with the prayers.

(4) That the Muslim reaches the level of the truthful and the martyrs on account of his prayers, charity and fasting.

(5) The superiority of prayer*2 over other actions.

The first dialogue between woman and man

December 17, 2010 Leave a comment

Suddi narrated through Abu Saalih and Abu Maalik from Ibn ‘Abbaas and Ibn Mas’ud, and also from some other Companions who said:

Iblis (Satan) was expelled from Paradise and Adaam was made to dwell in it. He wandered through it alone as he had no partner in whom he could seek his comfort. However, once he slept and when he woke up, he found a woman sitting near his head, whom Allaah had created from his rib. Adam asked her: “What are you?” She replied: “A woman.” He asked her again: “What are you created for?” She answered: “So you could seek comfort in me.” Angels who were well aware of the extent of the knowledge of Adam asked: “What is her name O Adaam?” He said: “Eve (Hawwa).” They asked him: “Why is it Hawwa?” Adam replied: “Because she was created from something living.

Wisdom behind Prophet Muhammad’s practice of polygyny

December 17, 2010 2 comments

Source: General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta (alifta.net)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) married to several wives following his migration to Madinah. His practice of polygyny was not something novel, as polygyny was widely practiced by all people and nations. Some societies allowed unlimited number of wives until some men had more than seven hundred wives, not including slave women. Some Arabs were reported to have taken in marriage more than ten wives. When Ghilan ibn Salamah Al-Thaqafy embraced Islam, he was married to ten wives. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him, saying: Choose four of them (and divorce the rest).

Did you understand affair of at-Tawheed?

December 16, 2010 3 comments

Shaikhul-Islaam would teach this book from cover to cover. And once he would finish the book, he would go back to the beginning and he would start it all over again. And when this happened on a number of occasions, his students asked that another book be started, that they had learned this affair of at-Tawheed. They wanted to continue on to another affair. The shaikh, willing to test them and their understanding, set up a test for them. And he said to them that on such and such day there will be no dars (lesson) because he had to travel to see someone who had fornicated with his own mother. And his students were astonished and surprised. That was clear by the voices they made.

When [the shaikh] returned, the students asked as to what happened to this individual. Shaikhul-Islaam said it was not as he had explained – that he had commited fornication with his own mother – but rather a man was commiting shirk by slaughtering a small animal in the name of other than Allaah. When he explained this, the astonishment from his students left them. They were no longer astonished. So the astonishment that was present when they heard a man was commiting fornication with his own mother was great. But when they heard of someone commiting shirk with a small animal, the astonishment was absent, as though this action [shirk] was less serious than the former action [fornication with his mother].

Shaikhul-Islaam, through this test, knew that his students did not understand this affair of at-Tawheed, and he began the book all over again.

Is Abu Talib’s punishment less severe than the sinners from the muslims?

December 16, 2010 Leave a comment

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (May Allaah have mercy on him) answers a very important question in his explanation of the Aqeedah of As-Safaariniya:

Question: We said that verily the uncle of the Prophet (peace be upon him) will have the least severe punishment from the people of the Hell-Fire. Will his punishment be less severe than the sinners from the believers?

Answer: “NO, because the sinners from the believers are not called the People of the Hell-Fire, even if they enter into the fire, they are not from the People of the Hell-fire. If you came to Unaizah and stayed for two days, you are not called from the People of Unaizah , so what is intended by the People of the Hell-fire are the ones who will be there forever.” And Allaah knows Best.
