The Jilbaab is Worn from the Head, And the Impermissibility of the Shoulder Abaaya

In the Name of Allaah, Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem…

Question posed to Shaykh ‘Ubayd al-Jaabiree

[Q]: Is it permissible for a woman to disobey her parents if they command her not to wear the ‘abaaya?

[A]: It seems to be apparent that you, O my daughter, are from the khalaeej (the Gulf States) if in fact you are not from Saudi Arabia. It is obligatory upon the Muslim woman to wear the jilbaab. The jilbaab is an outer covering that conceals the beauty of a woman and her clothing; it covers her body from head to toe. This means that it covers the entire body.

As for the ‘abaaya that is most popular in the Gulf States, then it has taken the place of the jilbaab.

I say that if in your area the jilbaab is predominately worn by the people, then do not wear the ‘abaaya. However, if in your area or country the people predominately wear the ‘abaaya then do not obey your parents (i.e. wear the jilbaab not the ‘abayaa) as there is no obedience to the creation when it involves disobedience to the creator.

At this point I would like to clarify that the ‘abaaya of the woman is be worn upon the head, and for her to wear it upon the shoulders is an error, even if some of the people of knowledge have given verdicts that the ‘abaaya can be worn on the shoulders.

Verily, those who have given the verdict (stating) that a woman can wear the ‘abayaa on the shoulders have only done so because they were unaware that the ‘abayaa has taken the place of the jilbaab; and the jilbaab is worn from the head.

Understand this, may Allaah bless you.

Faith has both apparent and hidden aspects – Imam Ibn AI-Qayyim

Source: Al-Fawaaid – A COLLECTION OF WISE SAYINGS – Imam Ibn AI-Qayyim,
Rendered into English by: Bayan Translation Services

Faith has both apparent and hidden aspects. Its apparent aspect is when it is related by the tongue and acted upon by the body. The hidden aspect is the acknowledgment of the heart, and its submission and love. Therefore, the apparent aspect of faith will be of no use for someone who does not have the hidden aspect, though his blood is spared and his wealth and children are preserved by it. And no hidden aspect will be of any use, unless there is no fear that it will be weakened, coerced or in fear of being ruined. Therefore, the failure of apparent deeds without the existence of any real prevention, means the corruption of the hidden aspect and lack of faith. Its deficiency refers to its deficiency of faith and intensity refers to its intensity of faith.

Therefore, faith is the heart and core of Islam, and certainty is the heart and core of faith. Any piece of knowledge or deed that does not make faith and certainty stronger is abnormal, and any faith that does not urge one to perform good deeds is abnormal.

Invoking Allaah by His Greatest Name, and its Virtue

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu ‘ala rasulullaah

Invoking Allaah by His Greatest Name, and its Virtue

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullaah) recorded that Asma’ bint Yazid bin As-Sakan said:

quote:
I heard the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) say about these two Ayat – Allaah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever-Living (Al-Hayy), the One Who sustains and protects all that exists (Al-Qayyoom) [Ayat al-Kursi] and Alif-Lam-Mim. Allaah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever-Living (Al-Hayy), the One Who sustains and protects all that exists (Al-Qayyoom) [The beginning of Surat Al 'Imran]

quote:
They contain Allaah’s Greatest Name.

This is also the narration collected by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, and At-Tirmidhi said “Hasan Sahih.”

Ibn Marduwyah recorded that Abu Umamah reported that the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

quote:
Allaah’s Greatest Name – if He was supplicated with it, He answers the supplication – is in three Surahs: Al-Baqarah, Al ‘Imran, and Ta-Ha.

Hisham bin ‘Ammar, the Khateeb of Damascus (one of the narrators in the above narration), said:

quote:
“As for Al-Baqarah, it is in: Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever-Living (Al-Hayy), the One Who sustains and protects all that exists (Al-Qayyoom) [aya 255].

In Al ‘Imran, it is in: Alif-Lam-Mim. Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever-Living (Al-Hayy), the One Who sustains and protects all that exists (Al-Qayyoom) [ayat 1-2], while in Ta-Ha, it is in: And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allah), the Ever-Living (Al-Hayy), the One Who sustains and protects all that exists (Al-Qayyoom) [aya 111]

In Imam as-Sa’dee’s Tafseer of Ayat al-Kursi, he (rahimahullaah) wrote:

quote:
He is “Al-Hayy“: The Ever-Living, to whom belongs all of the qualities of perfect life; including perfection in hearing, vision, ability, will, might, knowledge, wisdom, mercy, and other proper attributes relating to His essence.

He is “Al-Qayyoom“: The Sustainer, Who is independent and free of any need of His creation. He sustains all of existence. He originated everything into existence, maintained and provided everything with sustenance, and all the necessities for existence and survival.

Allaah’s name “Al-Hayy” indicates all of Allaah’s attributes relating to His essence, while, “Al-Qayyoom” entails all of His attributes describing His actions. Thus, all of His lofty attributes refer back to these two beautiful names.

Hence, it is narrated that “Al-Hayy, Al-Qayyoom” is the greatest name, which if Allaah is invoked by, He answers, and if requested by, He grants.

Woe to those who read them without reflecting upon them

May 29, 2010 1 comment

Ata’ reported; ‘Ubaid Ibn Umair and I visited A’ishah radiaAllahu ‘anha, then Ibn Umair asked her: “Tell us about the most remarkable thing you have seen from the Prophet (salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).”

A’ishah wept and said, “He (salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) woke up one night and said to me, “O Ai’shah, let me worship my Lord alone.” She said, “I swear by Allah that I love your company and I love what pleases you.” He (salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then made ablution and started performing Salaah. He (salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) kept weeping until his lap became wet, and kept weeping until the floor became wet. Bilal radiAllahu ‘anhu then came to inform him about the Fajr Salaah and found him still weeping; he radiAllahu ‘anhu said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, you are weeping when Allah has forgiven all your past and future sins.” He (salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Then may I not become the most grateful servant of Allah; tonight these verses were revealed to me, so woe to those who read them without reflecting upon them: “VERILY! IN THE CREATION OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH AND THE ALTERNATION OF THE NIGHT AND THE DAY THERE ARE INDEED SIGNS FOR MEN OF UNDERSTANDING.” [Surah Al-Imran v.190]

[The hadith is transmitted by Ibn Hibban and in Albanis 'Silsilah as-Sahihah' 68 with a Good Isnaad.]

A Way to Jannah

Hadith – Sahih Bukhari 3:894, Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah’s Apostle said, “Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”

Hadith – Sahih Bukhari 8:419, Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allah is Witr (one) and loves ‘the Witr’ (i.e., odd numbers).

The best thing after Iman and the worst thing after Kufr

May 28, 2010 1 comment
The best thing after Iman and the worst thing after Kufr [women]

It is reported that ‘Umar b. Al-Khattâb – Allâh be pleased with him – once addressed the people and said:

No man can have anything better after faith (îmân) than a woman of righteous character, loving and child-bearing. And no man can have anything worse after unbelief (kufr) than a sharp-tongued woman of bad character.

Al-Hâfidh Abul-Qâsim Al-Asbahânî, Al-Targhîb wa Al-Tarhîb article 1528. Also recorded in other sources with a slight variation in wording.

The Best Muslims on the Day of Judgment

Imran bin Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)said: “ The best Muslims on the Day of Judgment are those who praise Allah highly.”

Collected by At-Tabarani in Al-Kabeer # 14673. Shaykh Al-Albani graded this hadeeth as being Saheeh in Jami’ #1571.

Benefits for this topic:

Muhammad ibn Abdur Rauf Al-Manaawee commented on this hadeeth in Faydul Qadeer. He wrote :

1. The best people on the Day of Judgment refer to the Day of reward and punishment. That is the day where the veil will be lifted and whatever is unknown will become known. That is the day where the results for actions will be given.

2. Those who praise Allah highly refers to the people frequently praise Allah with His most beautiful characteristics: belonging to Him only. These people regularly praise Allah during good and bad times. Allah deserves praises from all mankind all the time.

The Future is for Islam – Shaykh al-Albani

The Future is for Islam

Shaykh al-Albani [1] , Source: Silsilatul-Ahaadeethus-Saheehah (pp.6-8),

Al-Istiqaamah Magazine , Issue No.2 – Safar 1417H / July 1996

“Allaah – the Mighty and Majestic – said:

“It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all other religions, no matter how much the disbelievers detest it.” [Soorah as-Saff 61:9].

We are given the good tidings in this verse that the future is for Islaam, which will gain dominance, ascendancy and rule over all other religions. Some people may think that this was fulfilled in the time of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and the Rightly Guided Khaleefahs (successors) and the righteous kings – but that is not the case. Rather, only a part of this true promise was fulfilled then – as the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam indicated in his saying:

“Night and day will not pass away until al-Laat and al-’Uzzaa are worshipped.” So ‘Aaishah radiallaahu ‘anhaa said: O Messenger of Allaah! I thought that when Allaah sent down:

“It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all other religions, no matter how much the disbelievers detest it.”

that it would be complete. He sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “There will be of that what Allaah wishes.” 2

There are other ahaadeeth which show how far Islaam will reach and dominate and how far it will spread, such that there is no doubt that the future is for Islaam, by the permission and favour of Allaah. So I will quote what I am able to from these ahaadeeth and hopefully they will strengthen the determination of the workers for Islaam; and be a proof against those who are indifferent and those who have despaired!

Firstly: “Indeed Allaah gathered up the earth for me so that I saw its east and its west; and indeed the dominion of my Ummah will reach what was gathered up for me from it.” 3 And even clearer than it and more general is the hadeeth:

Secondly: “This affair will reach what is reached by the night and the day; and Allaah will not leave a dwelling of brick, nor fur, except that Allaah will cause this Deen to enter it – bringing honour or humiliation. Honour which Allaah gives to Islaam and humiliation which Allaah will give to disbelief.” 4
